AI is a Potential ‘Goldmine' and a ‘Ticking Time Bomb,' Says SMPTE Chief at HPA Tech Retreat
AI is both a potential 'goldmine' and a 'ticking time bomb,' in the words of Rich Welsh, Deluxe senior VP of innovation, who also serves as president of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers.
Speaking Wednesday at the HPA Tech Retreat, an annual engineering conference taking place this week in Palm Springs, Welsh reviewed some of the recent steps and decisions toward AI legislation, a subject that remains murky. 'Creative work in particular belongs to the person who created it. But can you protect it realistically, if you don't have any recourse to defend the ownership of that work?,' he asked. 'That is my ticking time bomb.'

He then turned the subject to the potential opportunity afforded by the huge archives of content owned by media & entertainment companies. 'We generate so much information when we shoot a TV show, shoot a movie, shoot a commercial,' he said. 'The substantial part of that information is thrown away afterwards, or it's kept somewhere where no one can see it. The 'keeping it somewhere no one can see it' is our advantage.' That edge, he continued, is that it is unavailable on social media or anywhere online. 'Your script notes, concept art, orchestration for soundtrack – these things don't really see the light of day,' he reminded the estimated 500 delegates.
But he asserted that this not-publicly-available data does have value. 'AI companies who are training these models cannot go and get that data without coming to you for it,' he said, adding though that there's a rub. 'And I'm going to guess that for most of you, you can't just access it either. You don't have it sitting there at your fingertips.'
He urged tagging of this content, including rights information. 'This is going to become more and more important if you want to use your data,' he said. 'And I think even if we think about this without legislation, ethically, this is what we should be doing.'
He also stressed that attendees need to 'think beyond the movie' about alternative uses of their archives as he concluded his talk. 'Think about all the other applications downstream,' he asserted. 'You've got retail, you've got the metaverse and virtual. So think about going beyond just the media that you're creating in terms of the AIs that you could train based on the data that you have and value that that brings to your content — and then I have to say, always be ethical.'
His talk was one in a schedule packed with speakers who discussed a range of subjects surrounding AI. The HPA confab runs through Thursday.

Timbaland Announces Work With AI Artist, Sparking Criticism
Source: Prince Williams / Getty Veteran producer and artist Timbaland is now working with artificial intelligence, announcing that he'll also be working with a new AI artist as part of a venture with an AI company. But the news has caused some backlash. Timbaland has launched Stage Zero, an AI-focused entertainment company, which he claims has signed the first-ever AI artist named TaTa. 'I'm not just producing tracks anymore. I'm producing systems, stories, and stars from scratch,' Timbaland said in an interview with Billboard. '[TaTa] is not an avatar. She is not a character. TaTa is a living, learning, autonomous music artist built with AI. TaTa is the start of something bigger. She's the first artist of a new generation. A-Pop is the next cultural evolution, and TaTa is its first icon.' He and Stage Zero released an image of 'TaTa,' depicted as a young, pink-haired woman. The venture is what the artist hopes will be a new genre of music called 'A-pop,' reflecting his work with Suno, a company that has reportedly used millions of copyrighted songs to train its AI engine. In an interview with Rolling Stone , he's reportedly created 50,000 songs from working with Suno, saying: 'The technology of today is perfect for what this is. What used to take me three months only takes me two days. In the beginning, it was like a toy. It was like going to a toy store. You gotta go through gluttony, because you can't believe that it's here.' The Grammy-winning producer's stance has earned him some backlash from fans and others in the music industry, notably from producer Young Guru who blasted him on his Instagram page. 'I'm going to say it again,' Young Guru wrote. 'I swear I love you bro but this ain't it. Do you not realize what is going on in the world. Your voice is powerful and way too important to do anything like this. I have students who worship you. They are going to say 'if Tim can do it, then it is ok for me to do it.' These are the times, right here, that history is defined .. Human expression can never be reduced to this!!! This is way bigger than music!!! I say this all in love.' Celebrities react to LA protest against ICE detention policies
Following Donald Trump's deployment of the National Guard to Los Angeles, artists have been speaking out against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) deportation raids and offering support to protestors in LA. As reported by Euronews, Trump deployed another 2,100 National Guard members and 700 US Marines, in what the authorities have dubbed Task Force 51 meant to "provide continuous coverage of the area" as unrest in Los Angeles continues. Many celebrities posted messages on social media supporting the protestors and criticising the National Guard's deployment, including Eva Longoria and Mark Ruffalo. Longoria took to Instagram to express her frustration and described the actions as 'Un-American', while Ruffalo shared a lengthy message to Instagram with the caption: "When you have working class people going after the poor and other working class people you know you are living in an oligarchy." He added: "The billionaire up at the top is stealing you blind, and you are worried about the poorest of the poor ruining your life? You are pointing your guns in the wrong direction... The president is a grifter." Ruffalo's post went viral, racking up to 200,000 likes—including from other celebrities, including Jennifer Garner and Halle Berry. Finneas also reposted a clip that appeared to show a reporter, Lauren Tomasi, being shot in the leg with a rubber bullet by law enforcement while she was reporting from the scene. Elsewhere, Grammy-winning rapper Doechii spoke out against the immigration raids in Los Angeles at the 2025 BET Awards last her speech, Doechii said that though she was 'honoured' by the award, she wanted to 'address what is happening right now outside of the building'. 'There are ruthless attacks that are creating fear and chaos in our communities in the name of law and order,' she continued, citing Trump's deployment of the National Guard. 'Trump is using military forces to stop a protest,' Doechii added. 'I want you all to consider what kind of government it appears to be when every time we exercise our democratic right to protest, the military is deployed against us. What type of government is that?'The heated situation has also prompted a fierce political backlash. Governor Gavin Newsom took to X to announce his plans to sue the federal government over the National Guard deployment, calling it 'an unconstitutional act.' "This is exactly what Donald Trump wanted. He flamed the fires and illegally acted to federalize the National Guard. The order he signed doesn't just apply to CA (California). It will allow him to go into ANY STATE and do the same thing. We're suing him."
