MACC arrests three bank officers over RM21m loan fraud, graft
According to a source, the male suspects — a business manager, a department head, and a branch manager, aged between 30 and 40, were detained between 4 pm and 5 pm yesterday at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya while giving their statements.
'Preliminary investigations suggest the trio were involved in acquiring, transferring, and using illicit funds received as bribes from three companies in 2024.
'One of them, a department head, is believed to have solicited and accepted over RM170,000 from the companies as a reward for processing and approving five loan applications totalling more than RM21 million,' the source said.
The MACC also froze four bank accounts belonging to the suspects, involving around RM268,000, and seized three mobile devices and a laptop.
All three have been remanded for five days starting today, following approval by Magistrate Mohd Dinie Shazwan Ab Shukor at the Putrajaya Sessions Court.
In a separate case, three individuals, including a former company executive director, were also remanded for five days beginning today over alleged conspiracy to use falsified documents in claims worth about RM2.5 million.
The suspects – a man and two women aged between 30 and 40, were arrested yesterday between 4pm and 7pm while giving their statements at the MACC headquarters.
'They are believed to have committed the offences between 2022 and 2024, involving reimbursement and bonus payment claims totalling approximately RM2.5 million,' the source added.
MACC Anti-Money Laundering Division director Norhaizam Muhammad confirmed the arrests in both cases, adding that investigations are being conducted under Section 4(1)(b) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLATFPUAA), and Section 18 of the MACC Act 2009 for abetment. — BERNAMA

Kedah water tariff hike explained by MB as non-burdensome
ALOR SETAR: Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor stated that the water tariff increase effective from August 1 will not burden Kedah residents. He emphasised that the new rate of 81 sen for the first 20 cubic metres of domestic use is significantly lower than tariffs in other states. According to Muhammad Sanusi, this adjustment is crucial for Syarikat Air Darul Aman Sdn Bhd (SADA) to manage the state government's water-related debts. 'This tariff increase is not just happening in Kedah,' he confirmed during the Kedah State Legislative Assembly session. He noted that all ten water supply operators in the country requested and received approval for similar adjustments. Muhammad Sanusi, who also chairs SADA, explained that profitability is essential for the company to settle its water supply debts. SADA's financial records show profits after tax ranging from RM31,000 to RM23.1 million between 2010 and 2018. The company faced a loss of RM36 million in 2019 but returned to profitability with RM149,000 in 2020. Profits grew to RM29.5 million in 2021, followed by RM29.4 million in 2022 and RM25.2 million in 2023. SADA recorded RM41.5 million in profit for 2024 and projects an RM80 million profit for the current year. Executive authority over clean water supply resides with the federal government through the National Water Services Commission (SPAN). This is stipulated under Section 3 of the Water Services Industry Act 2006. 'SPAN issues licenses and controls all business plan operators,' Muhammad Sanusi elaborated. Pamela Ling case: 48 witnesses, MACC officers questioned
KUALA LUMPUR: Police have recorded statements from 48 witnesses to assist the investigation into the disappearance of Datin Seri Pamela Ling Yueh. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail confirmed the figure includes four officers from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission. He stated that close cooperation is being carried out with enforcement agencies, including the MACC, to ensure a comprehensive investigation. 'Cooperation was made with related agencies, including the Immigration Department,' Saifuddin said during his parliamentary winding-up speech. He provided an example, noting 'the vehicle that was allegedly used was found north of the Bukit Kayu Hitam-Thailand border.' The minister clarified that 'this is only a belief, not an affirmative confirmation.' He stressed that police will investigate every missing persons report according to standard operating procedures and the law. Saifuddin cited police data showing that in every ten missing persons cases, nine are successfully found. 'Specifically, this missing person incident does not give an impression that the level of public safety is worrying,' he stated. He added, however, that authorities 'cannot adopt a denial syndrome attitude because if it involves lives, it is crucial.' The minister also addressed national border security during his parliamentary session. He revealed authorities detected 71 illegal routes for smuggling along the Sarawak-Kalimantan border. These include hot spots in Ba'kelalan, Lubuk Antu and Tebedu. The government has approved an allocation of RM28 million to develop seven additional security control posts. These posts include Pos Raso 1 in Lundu, Pos Sapit in Padawan and Pos Tepoi in Serian. An additional allocation of RM64.318 million was approved under a special development fund for the Sarawak border. Saifuddin said this funding will be utilised by the Sarawak Brigade General Operations Force. It will cover 22 projects involving 14 non-physical and eight physical initiatives. To further strengthen border control, the Royal Malaysia Police has established Battalion 23 in Seri Aman. This adds another battalion under the Sarawak Brigade GOF to the existing three. The move involves the addition of 320 personnel consisting of senior and junior police officers and civil servants. - Bernama
