I'd spent three years in archives in Berlin chasing down Dora's story. Finding Dora required hunting through government documents, translating hundred-year-old dissertations, and looking for material that survived Nazi purges. For me, pulling together the disparate pieces of her life into a book has been a task of exhumation as much as reclamation.

For years, when mentioned at all, Dora appeared as a coda to a tragedy — a victim of the Nazis who attacked the Institute for Sexual Science in 1933. But Dora's story is bigger, brighter, and longer than that dark period. She outlived her persecutors and survived long after the Third Reich had fallen. This is the story of a forgotten first, the vibrant and unsinkable Dora who lived her life with authenticity.

The village of Seifen stands at an elevation of around 3,000 feet. Despite its location on the Czech side of the border, most of the residents were then German and Catholic. On April 17, 1892, a Rudolf Richter would be entered into the town's baptismal records as the second child of Josef and Antonia, a musician and a lacemaker.
Antonia had wished for a girl, and reproductive superstitions were strong in the late 19th century. Her wishes were thought to have been transferred onto the child, who was born a cherubic creature, small and delicate, and took after her mother in looks and personality.
Antonia taught her children lacemaking, but their father rebuked the art as inappropriate for a boy. He insisted that Rudolf wear trousers, but Rudolf took to sneaking dresses from the girls. 'He' then chose the name Dora and wore women's clothing in secret, despite the threat of a beating. It is unclear exactly when she adopted the new name, but she wrote letters to a schoolmate under the name Dora.

With the first signs of puberty, Dora even attempted to remove the offending penis. The first try failed, and the child feared to make a second. Inconsolable, Dora swallowed nails in a suicide attempt. She was only 13 years old.

I read Dora's account of this for the first time in a dimly lit reading room at Humboldt University in Berlin. An unpublished doctoral thesis contained the transcript of an interview with Dora from 1923. Typed on onion skin paper in fading purple ink were Dora's own words. I was struck then, as I am now, by how strikingly similar Dora's plight resembles that of modern transgender teens. For all the talk of trans identity being a modern invention, in the 19th century a working-class teenager in an isolated mountain town had the same struggles.
Dora would eventually leave home to work as an apprentice baker to send money back to her family. Whenever possible, she dressed and lived as a woman. More than anything, she wanted to be loved by a man — but
as
a woman. And for this simplest of wishes, she faced abuse and ridicule from her family, threats and blackmail from strangers, and the risk of imprisonment — or worse, as the rising Nazi party targeted gender and sexual nonconformists.
When I began researching Dora's life in 2020, I was convinced, like many researchers before me, that she had met her end at the Institute for Sexual Science in 1933, the day Hitler's 'Sturmabteilung,' a paramilitary organization, sacked it and burned its books — a tragedy immortalized in black-and-white film reels. Until at least 2023, everyone assumed Dora was killed in this attack. It was only when I, Clara Hartman, and a few others began digging deeper did the full story emerge.

The intake interview revealed what Dora thought about herself as well as her adventures, her lovers, her heartbreaks. An update to her birth record showed that she had returned home after the notorious book burning. A spare mention in a census revealed she had escaped both the Nazis and the encroaching Soviets to return to Allersberg. In each mention, her new gender, achieved surgically, was preserved: Dora was the woman who lived. She made lace, tended flowers, and kept pet birds; she was remembered as a smiling old woman who died peacefully. She lived a long and healthy life. So why, I asked myself, hadn't her story been preserved along with that of Lili Elbe?
Elbe was a painter, supported largely by her partner, and she even wrote a book about her experiences. Dora, on the other hand, eschewed the limelight. She was not glamorous or well-heeled. She had no higher education, no grand aspirations, no claim to titles. She worked menial jobs in factories and as a maid.
Her experience reveals the quiet life of a person who, above all, wished to be an ordinary woman. There are many more Doras than Lilis — thousands of transgender people leading lives that will not be memorialized. And that is what makes her so very important right now. Pulling her story from the fragments of history likewise helps us recognize there are countless transgender people who have always been among us, living, loving, struggling, and also quietly thriving.

D-Day soldier awarded Distinguished Service Cross after 81 years
Army Staff Sgt. William D. Owens knew his platoon was in trouble. Part of A Company, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, his platoon had jumped into Normandy on June 6, 1944, and captured La Fiere Bridge, just west of Utah Beach. A day later, after vicious counterattacks by German troops and tanks, Owens had only a few men left to hold the vital crossing across the Merderet River. Bloodied and outnumbered, they fought on. Owens rallied his men, strengthened their defenses and collected ammunition from the dead and wounded, then single-handedly fired two machine guns and a Browning automatic rifle as hundreds of Germans tried to storm their position. Four Americans earned the Distinguished Service Cross — second only to the Medal of Honor — for their actions at La Fiere that day, though Owens was not one of them. The men of A Company thought that was unfair. So did retired Army Col. Keith Nightingale, a Vietnam veteran who later led the 505th PIR. When he learned of the oversight, he had to do something about it. 'This is a guy who essentially saved the defensive position of the 505,' Nightingale said. 'In doing so, he preserved the strategic objective of the bridge. It struck me emotionally.' He added, 'Gen. Gavin [later commander of the 82nd Airborne] said he deserved the Medal of Honor.' During a ceremony Thursday at La Fiere Memorial Park in France, Harrison Morales accepted the Distinguished Service Cross on behalf of his great-grandfather, Owens, who died in 1967. The long-overdue award is an upgrade of his Bronze Star. Owens also received the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Silver Star for Operation Market Garden. The firefight at La Fiere was one of the fiercest and most important of the Normandy campaign. Elements of the 82nd Airborne held the bridge — actually a causeway between fields flooded by the Germans to prevent parachute drops — against several bloody counterattacks. Failure here would have seriously jeopardized the D-Day landings by preventing the U.S. Army's 4th Infantry Division and 70th Tank Battalion from moving inland from Utah Beach. Military journalist S.L.A. Marshall, author of 'Night Drop: The American Airborne Invasion of Normandy,' claimed La Fiere Bridge was 'probably the bloodiest small unit struggle in the experience of American arms.' With the aid of 44 men in his platoon, Owens captured the bridge in the wee hours of June 6. Over the next 48 hours, they held their ground against three German tanks, which were destroyed by a pair of two-man bazooka teams. Owens scared off a fourth tank by braving enemy fire so he could get close enough to toss Gammon grenades. 'Owens is one of the premier heroes,' said James Donovan, author of the newly published 'Nothing But Courage: The 82nd Airborne's Daring D-Day Mission — and Their Heroic Charge Across the La Fiere Bridge.' 'Not only did he prevent a sneak German attack by crawling along to throw two grenades, but he directs the defense for the next two days,' Donovan said. 'He was the key.' During the battle, the staff sergeant saw his force dwindle from 45 to just 12 effectives. Owens, who became company commander when his lieutenant was mortally wounded, took charge and repositioned his soldiers to stop three German assaults. He crawled between foxholes to gather ammunition from casualties and even propped up dead soldiers to make them appear alive. For one attack, Owens by himself fired two machine guns whose crews had been killed or wounded. When the barrel of one overheated, he blasted away with a Browning automatic rifle until he ran out of ammunition. Years later, when Marshall interviewed 505th PIR soldiers about what happened, he was told by nearly everyone, 'The defense was saved by Owens. It was his courage and calmness which made us stick [it] out. He carried the load.' 'Owens is providing critical leadership at a crucial time and he is directly involved in combat under circumstances that are very, very impressive,' said military historian Martin K.A. Morgan, author of 'Down to Earth: The 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment in Normandy.' 'His citation for the Distinguished Service Cross shows him cradling and firing a machine gun. That's super soldier stuff right there.' Lt. Gen. James Gavin, commanding officer of the 505th PIR, witnessed Owens in action and nominated him for the Medal of Honor, which was declined. Battalion commander Lt. John J. Dolan backed him for a Distinguished Service Cross but the paperwork was lost. Nightingale discovered this oversight about five years ago. He worked passionately to rectify the omission and make sure Owens' family would receive the medal, which was upgraded from a Bronze Star. 'This guy goes from being a squad leader to company commander in the course of a couple of hours,' Nightingale said. 'He was lost in history, and I thought that was not a good idea. We had a lost valor.'

‘This is our duty': D-Day veterans gather to mark landings 81 years on
D-Day veterans have gathered on a Normandy beach to remember the landings 81 years on. The veterans, aged between 99 and 101, travelled to France for the annual ceremony of remembrance for the men who landed on the beaches of Normandy on June 6 1944, to liberate France from Nazi occupation during the Second World War. The five men – Ken Hay, Richard Aldred, Henry Rice, Jim Grant and John Dennett – gathered ahead of the ceremony for a photograph on Sword Beach, one of the five main landing areas along the Normandy coast. The veterans, sitting in wheelchairs while adorned with medals of service, are some of the few D-Day veterans who are still alive today. Mr Hay, 99, was a private in the 4th Battalion with the Dorset Regiment, and was captured by Nazi troops shortly after the D-Day landings. Held as a prisoner of war, he was taken to Poland and forced to work in coal mines before he was liberated by US troops in 1945. On the eve of the ceremony, Mr Hay told The Telegraph: 'Even though the 80th anniversary has passed, we veterans still feel it is our duty to come back here and remember all our friends who never came home. 'We get applauded, even though they are the ones who gave all. 'Sharing my stories with children in the UK and France is something I am very passionate about. We are the age of their great grandparents – we experienced it, understand it and know that it should never happen again.' Francis 'Jim' Grant, 100, served as a Royal Marine and manned a gun on a Landing Craft Flak on D-Day, spending many hours providing covering fire for troops landing on the Normandy beaches. He said: 'I don't think we were really prepared for what happened. We were firing over the tops of their heads.' John Dennett, 100, was a Royal Navy anti-aircraft gunner on one of the thousands of ships taking troops onto the Normandy beaches. The veteran, from Wallasey, Merseyside, made sure the Allied soldiers did not get shot from overhead during the combined naval, air and land assault on Nazi-occupied France. On the 80th anniversary of the famous landings last year, Mr Dennett recalled the 'unbelievable' sight of the ships sailing to Normandy. He said he remembered the sight of the 7,000 ships and thinking 'nothing can happen to us'. 'When they'd gone and opened their fire and they did realise there was trouble, and your feelings were 'well this one is a bit different than the last one',' he added. Mr Rice, 99, from Cranleigh, Surrey, was a signalman who arrived off Juno Beach five days after D-Day. While Mr Aldred, 100, was a Cromwell tank driver attached to the 7th Armoured Division in the Army. Their photographs came before Lord Dannatt, former head of the Army, spoke at the remembrance service at the British Normandy Memorial above Gold Beach. He said the legacy of the soldiers killed on the battlefields of Normandy paved the way for the Europe in which we live today, before warning that the shadow of the Ukrainian war looms over the continent. The former chief of the general staff added: 'The price of returning peace and freedom to Europe was very high but the legacy of the fallen and the courage, determination and commitment of all those who fought in the Normandy Campaign has given us the Europe in which we live today, albeit in the shadow of the war in Ukraine.' Lord Dannatt, who chairs the Normandy Memorial Trust and is patron of the Spirit of Normandy Trust, gave the welcoming speech at the annual ceremony of remembrance, which is led jointly by the two trusts. The Rev Simon d'Albertanson, a Royal Navy chaplain and the chaplain for the Spirit of Normandy Trust, led a memorial service at the British Normandy Memorial in Ver-sur-Mer, describing D-Day as a 'seminal moment in history'. He reminded veterans, officials and members of the public that the legacy of D-Day was vitally important given the conflict and 'troubled times that we live in'. Mr d'Albertanson said: 'This was a seminal moment in history, and we forget it at our peril. 'There's a legacy that builds from the different conflicts, and we live in very troubled times right now, and we need men and women who are fighting for peace. 'As a Christian, one of the lines in the Bible is 'Blessed are the peacemakers'. 'We're called to make peace and sometimes that means we have to bring violence, but that's the last resort. We want to be peacemakers.' Two of the chaplain's own relatives fought during the Second World War. His grandfather, Fred Hawker, joined the Royal Marines in 1942 and served on several ships, including HMS Ark Royal, while his great-uncle, who was a Royal Navy sailor, lost his life during the Battle of the Denmark Strait. Mr d'Albertanson said: 'It's an absolute honour and a privilege to be a part of this. This is all about the veterans and honouring the fallen, those who gave their lives, for our freedom. 'Being here brings it to life. 'It makes you realise what you're involved in, the men and women of the armed forces today – and as chaplains we go with them.' John Healey, the Defence Secretary, also attended events commemorating D-Day, alongside politicians from the United States and France. He said: 'We forever owe an enormous debt to the British and Allied forces who landed in Normandy 81 years ago today, determined to defeat Nazi tyranny and restore peace to western Europe. 'As we reset the nation's contract with our armed forces, we will continue to remember all those who served to defend our values.' The Normandy landings took place on June 6 1944, when nearly 160,000 Allied forces opened a second front by invading Nazi-occupied France. Of those, 73,000 were from the United States and 83,000 from Britain and Canada. Forces from several other countries were also involved, including French troops fighting with General Charles de Gaulle.
