Three of inter-State gang arrested, gold worth ₹2.10 crore and ₹4.8 lakh in cash recovered

The Hindu21-07-2025
In a major breakthrough in the robbery reported from a goldsmith's shop in the thickly populated Saraf Bazaar area 10 days ago, the police have arrested three members of an inter-State gang and recovered 2.865 kg of gold worth ₹2.10 crore and ₹4.80 in cash from them.
The arrested men are mastermind Farooq Ahmad Malik, Ayodhya Prasad Chavan and Sohail Shaikh.
Farooq Malik is a native of Dadpur in Hooghly district of West Bengal. He has been residing in Kalaburagi for the past few years working as a goldsmith. Before shifting to Karnataka, he worked in a jewellery showroom in Dubai and specialized in designer Turkish jewellery.
Accused Ayodhya Prasad Chavan hails from Kansona village in North 24 Paraganss district of West Bengal. He was in clothes business in Mumbai for the last 15 years. He has a track record of 17 robbery cases.
Accused Sohail Shaikh is a tailor from Patra Chawl in Mumbai. He is also wanted in two robbery cases.
Police Commissioner Sharanappa S. Dhage, addressing presspersons here on Monday, shared details of the accused and how they committed the robbery.
Farooq, who suffered a loss in business, hatched a conspiracy with Ayodhya Prasad and invited him to be a part of the heist. Further, Ayodhya Prasad involved his accomplice Sohail Shaikh in the crime and they traveled all the way from Mumbai to Kalaburagi to join Farooq in the heist.
During interrogation, it was revealed that the accused hatched the plan 25 days before the crime which was put into motion on July 11 at 12.15 p.m. when the group of masked and armed individuals, wielding a toy gun and knives barged into the goldsmith's workshop and looted gold jewellery.
Dr. Dhage said that five teams were formed to arrest the accused. These teams visited several districts in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal in the last 10 days.
Two of the accused were arrested from West Bengal and the third one from Mumbai, while two other accused are absconding, he said.
He, however, refused to reveal how the police got initial leads that helped them reach the accused.
The owner of Malik Jewellers, where the heist happened, Sibghatullah Malik, hails from Prasadpur village in Hooghly district of West Bengal.
Interestingly, both the victim and the main accused are in goldsmithy business and they are native of Hooghly district in West Bengal.
Responding to a query, Dr. Dhage said that the victim initially spoke of being robbed of 2 kg to 3 kg of gold, but in the complaint he has mentioned that only 850 grams of gold was lost in the robbery.
He may be holding unaccounted for gold. The police will inquire into this matter with him, the officer added.

UK jury convicts man in drive-by shooting of 9-year-old Kerala girl

Agency: Last Updated: London, Aug 20 (PTI) A man involved in the planning of a drive-by shooting in north-east London which left a nine-year-old Kerala girl with life-changing injuries has been found guilty of the attack. The Metropolitan Police said a jury convicted 33-year-old Javon Riley on Monday of the attempted murder of three men as well as causing grievous bodily harm to the nine-year-old girl. His trial at the Old Bailey court in London heard how Riley did not shoot the gun but played a key role in orchestrating and implementing a plan intended to end the lives of rival gang members of an organised crime network on May 29, 2024. The innocent girl was caught in the crossfire and left with life-changing injuries as a result of a stray bullet being lodged in her head. 'In a single moment, the future we had imagined for our daughter was torn away. She was once an energetic, adventurous child — everything that celebrated movement, energy, and life," said the girl's mother, in a statement issued by the Met Police. 'Now, weakness on her left side means she can only watch from the sidelines, living with a titanium plate in her skull and a bullet still in her brain. As parents, we are shattered — emotionally, physically, mentally, and financially. Each day brings new challenges, from her slower growth on one side to the emotional and mental scars that cannot be seen," she said. The family from Birmingham had been on a day out in London and were enjoying a meal at a Turkish restaurant in Dalston, in the north-east London borough of Hackney, when the girl was struck with a flying bullet. 'The world we once believed was safe for our child now feels frightening and uncertain. This was not just an accident — even if our daughter was not the intended target, those responsible were still attempting to take lives. It is brutal and inhumane. We live with this pain every day, knowing nothing will ever be the same for our family," added her mother's statement. Javon Riley will be sentenced at the Old Bailey on September 12. Meanwhile, the Met Police specialist detectives are offering a financial reward of up to GBP 15,000 for information that leads to the identification, arrest and prosecution of the man who fired the weapon. 'Javon Riley's actions traumatically altered the trajectory of a little girl's life. While this outcome serves as a slither of justice, the dangerous individual responsible for pulling the trigger remains on our streets," said Detective Inspector Ben Dalloway, who led the investigation. On the night of the shooting outside the bustling restaurant last May, a gunman pulled up on a stolen Ducati Monster and opened fire six times. One of those bullets lodged in the brain of the young girl as she ate ice cream with her family, with the other rounds striking three men. All four were taken to hospital for emergency, life-saving surgery. PTI AK GSP GSP view comments First Published: August 20, 2025, 21:45 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. US-led coalition captures senior Islamic State member in Syria

Agency: Beirut, Aug 20 (AP) A US-led coalition captured a senior member of the Islamic State group in northwest Syria on Wednesday, state media and a war monitor reported. It was not immediately clear if the man is the IS supreme leader. The US military did not respond to a request for comment by The Associated Press. The operation that included landing troops from helicopters occurred before dawn in Atmeh town near the Turkish border, and an IS commander known as Abu Hafs al-Qurayshi, an Iraqi citizen, was taken away while another Iraqi citizen was killed, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The Observatory said the man captured had a French-speaking woman with him, and it was not immediately clear if she was taken by the US force or by Syrian security forces, who later cordoned the area. Two years ago, IS announced that a man called Abu Hafs al-Hashemi al-Qurayshi was named as its new leader after Turkish authorities killed his predecessor. Syrian state TV on Wednesday quoted an unnamed security official as saying the Iraqi man targeted in the operation is known as Ali, adding that his real name is Salah Noman. It said Noman was living in an apartment with his wife, son and mother. It said he was killed in the raid. There was no immediate clarification for the difference in names reported by state media and the war monitor. IS broke away from al-Qaida more than a decade ago and attracted supporters from around the world after it declared a so-called caliphate in 2014 in large parts of Syria and Iraq. Despite its defeat in Iraq in 2017 and in Syria two years later, IS militants still carry out deadly attacks in both countries and elsewhere. Al-Qurayshi is not the real name of IS leaders but comes from Quraish, the name of the tribe to which Islam's Prophet Muhammad belonged. IS claims its leaders hail from the tribe, and 'al-Qurayshi" is part of their nom de guerre. Man convicted of shooting 9-year-old girl from Kerala in head, permanently injuring her

Representational Image LONDON: A man has been convicted of causing grievous bodily harm with intent for his role in the shooting of a nine-year-old Keralite girl when she was eating ice-cream with her family in a restaurant in Dalston. The girl was hit in the head by the first of six bullets fired from a passing stolen motorcycle at a Turkish restaurant at 9.20 pm on May 29, 2024. She was caught up in a gangland shooting. Javon Riley (33) of Tottenham, London, was also found guilty by a jury at the Old Bailey of attempting to murder three men — Mustafa Kiziltan (35) Kenan Aydogdu (45) and Nasser Ali (44) — who were sitting outside Evin Restaurant. The three men were the intended targets. All four were taken to hospital for emergency surgery. The men had affiliations with Hackney Turks and the shooting was ordered by the Tottenham Turks, a rival gang, the court heard. Both gangs are responsible for importing most of the UK's heroin. The girl has been left permanently injured with a titanium plate in her skull and a bullet still in her brain. She was in hospital for three months and will continue to have physical and cognitive difficulties throughout her life. Her parents hail from Kerala's Ernakulam district and moved to Birmingham three years ago for work. Following the verdict her mother said: 'This was not just an accident — even if our daughter was not the intended target, those responsible were still attempting to take lives, it is brutal and inhumane. We live with this pain every day, knowing nothing will ever be the same for our family.' Riley denied the charges but was convicted on Monday following a three-week trial. He did not pull the trigger but scoped out the area over several days, which included drinking pina coladas at the bar opposite. On the night of the attack, he travelled past the scene several times in a stolen car to ensure the targets were present and helped the gunman evade capture. The gunman and firearm have never been found. Detectives are offering up to £15,000 (Rs 17 lakh) for information that leads to the gunman. Riley, who is not a member of Tottenham Turks, refused to name the gunman or the person who ordered the shooting fearing for his safety. He will be sentenced on Sep 12.
