JTBC's 'Beyond the Bar' promises to refresh crowded legal drama genre

Through the lens of the law, the series to offer viewers heartfelt look at human stories behind legal cases
Amid a saturated market of legal dramas, "Beyond the Bar" aims to deliver healing stories that explore the emotional wounds behind legal cases.
"Beyond the Bar" is an office drama centered on Hyo-min (Jung Chae-yeon), a rookie lawyer, and Seok-hoon (Lee Jin-wook), an elite attorney at the same firm.
Despite the star power of Jung, known for "Family By Choice" and as a former member of the K-pop group I.O.I, and Lee, a seasoned actor with hit K-drama credits including "Sweet Home" and "Squid Game," the series risks encountering audience fatigue with lawyer-centered series. It is premiering in the wake of tvN's "Law and the City," which airs from July 5 through Aug. 10, and last year's successful courtroom drama "Good Partner."
During a press conference in Seoul's Guro-gu on Thursday, director Kim Jae-hong addressed how "Beyond the Bar" distinguishes itself from typical legal fare.
'I haven't been directing for that long, but I've worked on two legal dramas. Still, when I first read the script for 'Beyond the Bar,' I thought, 'This is the real deal.' That's how detailed and realistic the litigation cases were,' he said.
He elaborated that each of the 12 episodes features a distinct story revolving around the theme of love.
"There are so many different forms of love in the world — and there are also those who have been hurt by it. I think what truly sets our series apart is the lawyers who, through these stories and lawsuits, try to heal people's wounds.'
On casting Lee Jin-wook as Seok-hoon, Kim said, 'He's cool-headed when working, but when it comes to dealing with clients or his own people, a deep warmth comes through. I thought Lee Jin-wook embodied both the external and internal qualities that Seok-hoon needed.'
Lee described Seok-hoon as 'a rational person who always has clear answers and makes quick decisions,' adding that he had to suppress his real-life personality — he likes to make people laugh — to portray Seok-hoon. "A lawyer isn't supposed to be funny. He's someone who handles cases logically and reasonably.'
"Of course, I enjoy working on fantasy genres too and sometimes miss them, but I also believe it's important to bring realistic aspects like this into everyday life. This character is truly precious to me.'
"Beyond the Bar" is set to premiere Saturday on JTBC, with streaming available on Netflix beginning Sunday.

Japanese version of 'Marry My Husband' becomes Prime Video Japan's most-watched series

The show's success highlights the global appeal of culturally reimagined storytelling The Japanese adaptation of the hit Korean drama "Marry My Husband" has become Amazon Prime Video Japan's most-watched series. Having premiered on June 27, the series soared to the top of the platform's viewership charts, drawing the largest audience in Japan within its first 30 days, from June 27 to July 27, 2025, according to data provided by Amazon Prime Video. As of Thursday, the drama also clinched the No. 1 spot on Prime Video's Top 10 chart in Japan, based on rankings compiled by FlixPatrol, a global streaming analytics firm. Keisuke Oishi, head of Amazon Prime Video Japan's local content division, said in a press release, 'The Japanese adaptation of 'Marry My Husband,' which reinterprets the universal appeal of the original from a uniquely Japanese perspective, has achieved the highest viewership record in our history. This accomplishment proves that the first collaborative effort between outstanding creators from both Korea and Japan has borne fruit.' Son Ja-young, executive producer at Studio Dragon -- the production house behind both the Korean and Japanese versions -- added in the same release, 'It's meaningful that this first attempt by a Korean production team to plan and produce an original drama tailored to Japanese sensibilities and culture resonated authentically with local viewers.' She continued, 'I hope this project serves as an opportunity to show that K-dramas can evolve in diverse ways, transcending cultural and regional boundaries.' A localized reimagining of the original tvN series, the Japanese version of "Marry My Husband" was developed by Studio Dragon and CJ ENM Japan, and co-produced by Jayuro Pictures and the venerable Japanese studio Shochiku. The series stars Fuka Koshiba as Misa Kanbe, a woman who is transported back in time after discovering her husband's affair with her closest friend. Takeru Sato co-stars as Wataru Suzuki, her boss and a potential romantic interest in her second shot at life. CJ ENM, which produced the original Korean TV adaptation of "Marry My Husband," stated during a June 26 press conference that the Japanese version is not a remake of the Korean series, but rather a reimagining of the original web novel, customized for Japanese audiences and cultural sensibilities.

Legoland Korea opens new water attraction ‘Marina Jets Bay'

Legoland Korea, a theme park opened in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province, in 2022, is diving into summer with the official launch of 'Marina Jets Bay,' a new water play attraction unveiled Friday. Spanning over 100 square meters, the interactive floor fountain was built with a 1.7 billion won ($1.2 million) investment and can accommodate up to 200 visitors at once. Located in the park's recently expanded City zone between the popular Wave Racers and Coast Guard Academy rides, Marina Jets Bay is the latest in a string of seasonal upgrades aimed at enhancing the summer experience. Featuring 150 nozzles that shoot water up to two meters high, the expansive splash zone promises fun for all ages, according to the company. The fountain operates in 10-minute intervals for nearly an hour each day during the summer season, and remains open until 9 p.m. during Legoland's extended night hours. Adding to the festive atmosphere, daily live DJ sets kick off at 2:30 p.m. The show features a high-energy soundtrack of Lego theme music and K-pop hits, accompanied by dancers and synchronized water jets. 'Marina Jets Bay is unlike any other water attraction we've hosted. It's designed to be a safe, dynamic and visually spectacular addition for families visiting during the summer months," a Legoland Korea spokesperson said. In addition to Marina Jets Bay, Legoland Korea is rolling out extended evening programming through Aug. 16. Every Saturday night, fireworks light up the skies at 8:30 p.m., with the park staying open an hour later to accommodate nighttime guests. To complement the night offerings, Legoland has introduced an 'Evening Ticket' priced at 35,000 won, available through October on Saturdays and select holidays, including National Liberation Day and Chuseok. The ticket allows guests to enjoy the park's attractions, night views and entertainment at a reduced rate. Legoland Korea said it plans to continue expanding its seasonal attractions to offer guests special and fun experiences throughout the year.
