India Vs Pakistan Clash In WCL 2025 Called Off After Indian Legends Withdraw In Protest

India.com5 days ago
The World Championship of Legends (WCL) 2025 has seen its most high-profile fixture, the India vs Pakistan clash, officially canceled following a mass withdrawal by former Indian players.
Veteran cricketers including Shikhar Dhawan, Suresh Raina, Harbhajan Singh, Yusuf Pathan, and Irfan Pathan publicly opted out of the match, expressing discomfort over participating in a fixture involving Pakistan, particularly in light of recent terror-related incidents in India.
Shikhar Dhawan, who played a key role in raising the issue, shared a screenshot of an email dated May 11, in which he informed tournament officials of his unwillingness to participate in matches involving Pakistan. Reinforcing his decision via social media, Dhawan stated, 'Desh se badhkar kuch nahi hota', meaning 'Nothing is greater than the nation.'
The decision sparked immediate public and media support. Shortly afterward, other Indian players followed suit, strengthening the protest and making the staging of the match virtually impossible.
Sponsors React
The patriotic stand taken by the players found backing from one of the tournament's major sponsors, EaseMyTrip. The company released a statement saying it would no longer support any fixture involving the Pakistan team in the WCL, despite being under a long-term sponsorship contract. The company emphasized that national sentiment outweighs commercial interest.
WCL Organizers Issue Apology
Faced with growing pressure and unable to assemble a complete Indian squad for the marquee encounter, the WCL 2025 organizers made the call to cancel the India–Pakistan game. A formal statement expressed regret over any emotional distress caused, adding that the remaining tournament fixtures would proceed as scheduled.
'We understand and deeply respect the emotions involved. Our goal was never to hurt public sentiment. WCL will continue, but we will not go forward with this particular match,' read the official announcement.

Impact Beyond the Game
The cancellation of the India vs Pakistan Legends match is more than just a sporting development; it highlights the powerful relationship between cricket, patriotism, and public emotion in the subcontinent. With players and sponsors aligning on ethical grounds, the incident sets a precedent for how sports organizations may need to balance business, diplomacy, and emotion in the future.

India Star Called 'Bits And Pieces Cricketer' In Brutal Take: 'Even Ravindra Jadeja...'

Former Indian cricket team batter Navjot Singh Sidhu was not happy with the decision to include Shardul Thakur in the playing XI for the fourth Test encounter against England at Old Trafford. Shardul was brought in as an all-rounder after injury ruled out Nitish Kumar Reddy. However, Sidhu went on to call him a 'bits and pieces cricketer' and said that choices like this will not help India win matches abroad. During his analysis on YouTube, Sidhu said that he would have supported the pick if Shardul was playing as a bowler but including him as an all-rounder can end up compromising the bowling attack. 'One area of problem, even if Shardul makes a fifty, at that number eight position, bits-and-pieces cricketers do well in one-day cricket, but in Test cricket, you always need specialists,' Sidhu said. 'If you could bring Shardul the bowler at number eight, then I would agree this is the right selection. You do not bowl him enough, and then in order to increase the batting, you compromise with your bowling.' Sidhu doubled down on his criticism by pointing out that the team management needs to be clear on what they expect from a player like Shardul and not try to bolster the batting in this way. 'Bits-and-pieces cricketers, I don't think, will ever win you games abroad. Even Jadeja could not pick wickets in the first two Tests with the rough. Batting, fielding, as an all-rounder, par excellence.' 'What is the purpose here? The guy at number eight, do you want him to give you five wickets or batting depth? If you want batting depth and that would win you games, then would those 200 runs (193 at Lord's) not have been chased? If seven can't do it, eight also won't. I have been repeating this point time and again. I feel this is again a compromise, and I feel it will not go in favour of India,' Sidhu added.

‘Not music to Indian ears': Ravi Shastri reacts to shock stat that gives Joe Root 60 percent chance to break Sachin Tendulkar's Test record

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has backed England batting heavyweight Joe Root to give a serious tussle to Sachin Tendulkar's unrivalled Test legacy of 15,921 runs after a shock stat reveal during the India vs England 4th Test in Old Trafford on Thursday. Unbeaten on 11 on Day 2, Root is closing in on the second spot in the Test run-getters list and could overtake batting legends Jacques Kallis (12,289) and Rahul Dravid (12,288) with another 20 runs. Only Ricky Ponting stands between Root and Tendulkar then, having aggregated 13,378 in 167 Tests for Australia. Noticing that Root could spring up to the second spot quickly, Shastri said that the 34-year-old Root has age on his side to cross Tendulkar and even rack up another 3000 Test runs. Former England opener Michael Atherton chimed in with assistance from Sky Sport statistician Benedict Bermange, who claimed that Root had a 60.28 per cent chance of nudging Tendulkar down from the top of the batting charts, baffling Shastri. 'Look at his age. Look at the number of matches. He's played 157. So you would imagine he would go past three ahead of him in almost three Test matches. And then he's got about 40 Test matches. Sachin has played 200 Tests. Root has played 160. He's still young. He has four years of cricket ahead of him. And what will separate him and Tendulkar will be around 3,000 runs. When you're hot, you're hot, and in the meantime, he has age on his side,' said Shastri. 'Benedict reliably informed me that he's got a 60.28% chance of beating Sachin Tendulkar. I don't know how he worked that out,' Atherton responded. Atherton cautioned Root on air of a curse from a million Indian fans after the late data-driven jolt on Thursday. 'I tell you that it won't be music to the ears of the Indians. It's just coming about to bedtime in India, and you've given us a stat — 60.28,' Shastri said. Atherton added: 'He'll be cursed. Millions of homes around Mumbai right now.' The former England skipper, however, said Root's numbers will remain unprecedented in Test cricket if he indeed manages to go past Tendulkar. 'Wherever Joe Root finishes, say, for example, he went past Sachin. I'm not so sure anybody will go past that just because of the nature of the way the game is going. People will play fewer Test matches, I would imagine, in the years to come,' he said.

Ponting questions India's bowling tactics, Vaughan says visitors need 'Virat mentality' to survive: 'They've been off'

Ricky Ponting did not held back as he criticised India's bowling plans against England on Day 2 of the 4th Test at Manchester, while Michael Vaughan said another bad day can spell doom for Shubman Gill and Co. read more Ricky Ponting and Michael Vaughan did not find many positives from India's performance on Day 2 of fourth Test vs England. Images: Reuters/PTI Former Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting ripped into Shubman Gill's plans as England openers put up a 166-run stand in no time against India on Day 2 of the fourth Test at Manchester on Thursday. Meanwhile, former England captain Michael Vaughan has said India will need the 'Virat mentality' to make a comeback in the Test match. After scoring a respectable 358 in the first innings, India were let down by their bowlers as England ended Day 2 on 225/2 from just 46 overs and trail India by only 133 runs. Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett gave England a blistering start as India's strategy to make debutant Anshul Kamboj bowl from the start backfired. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Ponting slams 'tactically wrong' India Ponting did not mince his words as he criticised India's field placements and bowling sections after a chastening day for the pacers. 'They got scored off on both sides of the wicket, didn't they?' Ponting said on Sky Sports. 'I think they were tactically off as well. I don't think Kamboj should have taken the new ball. I didn't like that from the start.' Also read | Zak Crawley hits back at Shubman Gill's allegations, says he enjoyed the on-field spat Ponting pointed out how Gill got the basics wrong while bowling Jasprit Bumrah from the wrong end. 'They were tactically wrong there,' Ponting added. 'Even watching now, Bumrah is bowling from the wrong end. Most of the wickets have fallen from the Statham End, and he's done most of his work from the Anderson End. They were off execution-wise and tactically they've been off as well.' Vaughan says India need 'Virat mentality' to survive Vaughan in a separate conversation with Dinesh Karthik on Cricbuzz stated that the ongoing India-England Test series, in which the visitors are 2-1 down, will be decided on Day 3 in Manchester and India will need to have an aggressive 'Virat mentality' to bring themselves back in ascendancy otherwise the series as good as done for them despite the last Test still to come. Also read | Shastri tears into Indian bowling unit for 'rubbish' display 'The series will be decided on Day Three. If England have a great day, I think they're winning this Test match and that's the series done and dusted,' he said. 'India and Shubman have to arrive on Day Three with that Virat mentality. We have to win the day. If they win tomorrow, the game is alive. If they lose, the series is gone.' Karthik agreed with Vaughan as he said: 'Those are big words and I think it's a very fair observation as well. Because walking into day three, as they call it, the moving day, you would almost think the series hangs in the balance on that day. If India wants to stay alive, they need to have a good day with the ball.'
