Forget the Typical Test Drive. This Mercedes-Benz Shopping Experience is Simply Epic
Creepy salesmen. Tip-toeing around a too-quiet showroom. The pressure to sign a deal without thinking it over. A quick drive around an unfamiliar neighborhood with that salesman in the passenger's seat. Sound familiar? It's the typical test drive experience and it's often awful.
For many car buyers, its a thing of the past, especially for Mercedes-Benz shoppers.
That's because they've traded the dealership test drive for a weekend at a five-star hotel, a fleet of luxury cars to drive and a free-reign drive route followed by cocktails and dinner on the patio and an exclusive concert under the stars. And no salesman will call.
Isn't that a better way to test drive your next car?
This story is 100% human researched and written based on actual first-person knowledge, extensive experience and expertise on the subject of cars and trucks. Additionally, I was a guest of Mercedes-Benz for this experience.
You may know Auberge Resorts Collection as those iconic, idyllic properties that look Instagram-perfect, chic buildings accented by olive trees and glinting sunlight. Properties that invite you to come in and get lost, dip into the pool, be subdued by a massage, lounge on expensive sheets.
We sampled this type of test drive at the Commodore Perry Estate in Austin, Texas recently as Auberge and Mercedes hosted hotel guests and their own current and future customers for a weekend of elegant dining and an exclusive performance by Maren Morris.
Needless to say, it was an amazing time. We test drove the G-Wagen, toured a guest room, had a lovely dinner and danced along to 'My Church' (though we didn't stay for night, sadly).

On event weekends—Mercedes and Auberge hosted three in 2024—the team rolls in with a true fleet of cars: Maybachs, G-Wagens, SUVs and sedans. You could spend all day driving the test cars. But there's more to do: you also have to see the Manufaktur Atelier.

Not every Mercedes-Benz buyer indulges in Manufaktur, but many do, especially those who buy G-Wagens and AMG models. The more exclusive models with a higher price tag should come with a more bespoke look and feel, right? And that's the idea of Manufaktur: To pick your leathers, paint and trim details and really customize your new car.
At the Atelier, which Mercedes sets up on event weekends, specialists guide you through the leather choices, the stitching, the metals, woods paint colors and finishes. And so you can feel what that leather is really like, they send you off with a small gift: A card case or small folio made of the Manufaktur leather.

Part of our experience was a very intimate performance by Maren Morris, one of three Auberge Concert Series performances held in 2024; the other artists included Kate Hudson and LeAnn Rhimes.
At the Commander Perry Estate the concert was held in the property's chappell, a smallish hall with excellent acoustics that seats up to 129 people. Yes, 129. We lounged on stuffed sofas while servers brought us drinks.
Two tables away was an actress (who I won't name) from one of the most popular HBO series ever. THAT will make you feel like a VIP.
The good news is that test drives are available all year long, so if you miss an event weekend or can't get a room (they sell out fast!) you can still pop into an Auberge Resort for the weekend and test drive a number of models. Mercedes is the official car partner of Auberge Resorts so there's always one on hand for you to experience.
Test models at the Commander Perry Estate include this GLC SUV and a G 550 G-Wagen. If you'd really just rather ride along, the hotel staff is happy to ferry you to local restaurants and shopping in the Mercedes-Benz fleet.
The room I toured was set up for the Auberge Concert Series/Mercedes-Benz weekend, replete with a hand-written welcome note and a snack. Each room is unique at the Commander Perry Estate, where the theme is historic heritage, filled with textiles and decor that you might find in the grand estates of the Old South. Vintage or modern, the Auberge ethos is always the same: warm and gracious.
Auberge Resorts, like Mercedes-Benz, is known for personal touches, a high standard of excellence and refined sensibilities, and that completely comes through in all they do. You feel as if they know who you are, have anticipated your needs and are longing to see you smile. That must be what it's like to be a celebrity; the feeling is certainly very VIP.
And for good reason: No creepy salesmen, no pressure, no bad experiences. It was cold and rainy during our test drive and the environment is so lovely you just have to shrug it off. We simply turned on the heated seats and sunk a but further into the leather upholstery to shield ourselves from the weather.
But isn't that the idea of a privileged experience? To separate us from all that hurts or irks us, and preserve those good moments as memories. Such as a test drive you'll never forget.

This Burning Mercedes-AMG One Breaks Our Hearts
Cars are complicated machines, even before shoehorning a massively complex Formula 1 engine behind the seats. Hybridization adds yet another layer of complexity, resulting in a hypercar that requires an engine rebuild every 31,000 miles (50,000 kilometers). Mercedes-AMG faced numerous hurdles during the development of its F1 car for the road, the AMG One. Even after years of delays, the problems didn't end. One car burned to a crisp inside an enclosed trailer in May 2023. Fast-forward two years, and it appears another Mercedes-AMG One has gone up in flames. In the age of AI, it's not always easy to verify what appears on social media, but this video seems legitimate. That said, we've done our due diligence and reached out to Mercedes to confirm whether the footage of the electrified hypercar burning to a crisp is genuine. Until we hear back, please consider our skepticism warranted. Details remain scarce, but based on the surroundings and look of the ambulance, it seems the fire occurred in Germany. The AMG One in question carries an 'OL' license plate, indicating registration in the Oldenburg region. After some digging, we found other videos of the car prior to the incident. The dark green machine was showcased in April at the Techno Classica Essen. Firefighters responded to the scene, but it was too late to save one of the 275 units that Mercedes-AMG is making. Footage of the aftermath shows what's left of the fastest production car to lap the Nürburgring . Frankly, identifying the make and model would be difficult, given how little is left after the fire. As for what caused the blaze, it's tempting to blame the complex hybrid setup. However, it's unclear whether the battery or the intricately engineered 1.6-liter V-6 was responsible. What matters most is that the driver apparently pulled over and got out of the vehicle before the AMG One was fully engulfed. Hopefully, they escaped unharmed. Circling back to the license plate, it appears to have been a customer car rather than a prototype. Mercedes' test vehicles typically use 'LW' plates for Ludwigsburg, because AMG's headquarters are located in Affalterbach, a municipality in the Ludwigsburg district. Dai-ichi Life to acquire 15% stake in British insurer M&G
Dai-ichi Life Holdings has revealed plans to acquire a 15% stake in UK-based insurer M&G through on-market purchases 'to capture long-term value creation opportunities across an array of strategic initiatives'. The acquisition, subject to regulatory approvals, is part of a long-term strategic partnership between the two companies covering asset management and life insurance. Once the 15% threshold is reached and certain conditions are met, Dai-ichi will have the right to appoint a director to M&G's board. Under the terms, M&G will become Dai-ichi's preferred asset management partner in Europe. The partnership will focus on growth, distribution and product development, with the aim of generating new business flows for both companies. M&G expects the partnership to support its expansion into European private markets and open new business opportunities in Japan and Asia. Dai-ichi will gain access to M&G's investment capabilities across public and private markets to support its own portfolio and client needs, and will collaborate to enhance Dai-ichi's expertise in bulk purchase annuities. Dai-ichi Life HD president and CEO Tetsuya Kikuta said: 'Dai-ichi Life Holdings is delighted to enter into a strategic alliance with M&G, a highly regarded global player in the insurance and asset management industries, to collaborate and develop capabilities together in multiple areas, especially in Europe. 'We see our partnership with M&G acting as a spearhead to develop our presence across Europe and the UK, accelerating our strategy to become a global top-tier insurance group.' The partnership is expected to generate at least $6bn in flows into M&G funds over five years, with Dai-ichi expecting at least $2bn (Y285.83bn) in new flows through investments and distribution of its products. An implementation agreement outlines Dai-ichi Life HD's governance rights and includes restrictions such as a two-year lock-up, a 19.99% shareholding cap and an orderly market arrangement for share disposals. Commenting on the partnership, M&G Group CEO Andrea Rossi stated: 'It brings together two highly complementary international businesses with shared growth ambitions who aim to deliver excellent client service and sustainable shareholder returns.' In April, TAL, a subsidiary of Dai-ichi Life Holdings, agreed to acquire a 15.1% stake in retirement solutions provider Challenger for Y80bn. "Dai-ichi Life to acquire 15% stake in British insurer M&G " was originally created and published by Life Insurance International, a GlobalData owned brand. It was not right – Max Verstappen takes blame for crash with George Russell
Max Verstappen has issued a veiled apology for his wild crash with George Russell by admitting it 'was not right and should have not happened'. The four-time world champion was hit with a 10-second penalty by the stewards for causing a collision with Russell with two laps remaining of Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix. Advertisement Russell said he felt Verstappen's move was deliberate and accused the Red Bull driver of letting himself down. He also suggested that Verstappen should have been disqualified for the crash. Verstappen refused to accept blame for the coming together after the race and even sarcastically offered Russell a tissue after he was informed of his British rival's criticism. However, in a message posted on social media on Monday, Verstappen said: 'We had an exciting strategy and good race in Barcelona, till the safety car came out. 'Our tyre choice to the end and some moves after the safety car restart fuelled my frustration, leading to a move that was not right and shouldn't have happened. Advertisement 'I always give everything out there for the team and emotions can run high. You win some together, you lose some together. See you (at the next race) in Montreal.' Verstappen, who was on the slower hard tyre compound, lost third place to Charles Leclerc after he opened the door to the Ferrari driver when he made a mistake on the exit of the final corner in a six-lap shootout to the flag following the deployment of a safety car. Russell then attempted to sling his Mercedes underneath Verstappen's Red Bull at the first corner before the Dutchman took to the escape road and remained ahead of the Briton. Advertisement 'Max, can you let Russell through, please?' said Verstappen's race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase. 'What? I was ahead, mate. What the f***! He just ran me off the road.' Verstappen slowed down at turn five to allow Russell past, but then accelerated and drove into his rival's Mercedes. 'What the f***'?' Russell said on the radio. Verstappen later moved out of Russell's way and crossed the line in fifth. However, he was hit with a timed penalty by the stewards – demoting him to 10th – and also punished with three penalty points on his licence which leaves him just one point away from a race ban. He now trails championship leader Oscar Piastri by 49 points in the standings. Mercedes' George Russell said he felt Max Verstappen's move was 'deliberate' (Bradley Collyer/PA) It marked another controversial chapter in Verstappen's career following run-ins last year with Lando Norris and multiple clashes with Lewis Hamilton in their title duel four years ago. Advertisement Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, who has been linked with a move for Verstappen, said: 'I don't know exactly what the motivations were and I don't want to jump on it and say it was road rage, but it wasn't nice. 'The great ones, whether it's in motor racing or in other sports, you just need to have the world against you and perform at the highest possible level. 'That's why sometimes these greats don't recognise that actually the world is not against you, it's just you who has made a mistake or screwed up.'
