Ludhiana: Man, female accomplice held with 300 gm heroin in Samrala
The operation was carried out by a special police team, including the narcotics wing, outside the police post under Samrala police station limits. As part of the drive, buses traveling from Ludhiana were being stopped and checked.
Sub-inspector Harjinder Singh, additional SHO at Samrala police station stated that a bus coming from Ludhiana was halted for inspection, during which a man and woman attempted to flee the vehicle, triggering suspicion. Police personnel quickly intercepted them and conducted a search, leading to the recovery of heroin from their belongings.
The accused have been identified as Dev Arjun, 24, resident of Sajjan Mahiro village, of Moga and Jashanpreet Kaur, 20, resident of Mehana village, Moga.
Both have been booked under the NDPS Act. The sub-inspector added that the duo was presented before a local court, which granted three-day police remand for detailed interrogation. Preliminary questioning revealed that they were en-route from Moga to Kharar, and the seized heroin was intended to be handed over to an unidentified person at the destination.
'Initial probe indicates that the accused have been in touch for quite some time, and their roles as possible mules for a larger drug trafficking racket are being investigated,' said Harjinder Singh. He added that police suspect the involvement of a broader network, and further arrests are likely as the investigation deepens.

Ex-cricketer Suresh Raina summoned by ED for questioning in illegal betting app case
The Enforcement Directorate has summoned former cricketer Suresh Raina on Wednesday at its Delhi office in connection with an ongoing probe into illegal betting platforms, officials told HT late Tuesday night. The former Indian player has been asked by ED to depose before the agency on August 13 for questioning in an illegal betting case linked to an app named 1xBet, PTI quoted the sources as saying. Earlier in the day, to obtain more information about the racket behind a betting app called 'Parimatch,' the ED officials from Mumbai conducted raids at 15 locations in Mumbai, Delhi-NCR, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Madurai, and Surat. The ED has launched its probe under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) upon a case registered by the Cyber Police Station in Mumbai in 2024. 'These platforms are in violation of multiple laws and directions by the Indian government, including tax evasion, money laundering, and Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) as money is transferred out of the country illegally. It is estimated that around 22 crore (220 million) Indian users are currently engaged on various betting apps, and 11 crore (110 million) of these are regular users,' an officer told HT. According to the initial investigation, funds were collected from duped users in mule accounts, which were layered through multiple payment aggregators and money transfer agents — aggregating to more than ₹ 2,000 crore, officials told HT. The official sources said that the amount was laundered through crypto wallets, smaller cash withdrawals through ATMs in a locality in Tamil Nadu, and through low-value UPI transfers. The ED had also summoned officials from Google and Meta to aid its investigation into betting apps that use multiple platforms for surrogate advertisements. The ED has been talking to many stakeholders, including media houses, who may have got money for advertisements from these platforms.

DGP reviews law & order situation in Bathinda, Faridkot, Ferozepur Ranges, ask officials to be ready against counter terrorism

Reaffirming commitment to eliminating the cross-border drug menace through transparent enforcement of the NDPS Act, DGP issued strategic directives on counter-terror readiness, inter-district coordination, strong nakas, and continuous surveillance to ensure safe Independence Day celebrations . DGP Gaurav Yadav appreciated the officers on work being done under the anti-drug Yudh Nashian Virudh campaign and directed them to further intensify the anti-drug campaign to wipe out the drugs from the state. He also asked officers to conduct financial investigations vis section 68-F of the NDPS Act, and against Hawala operators to dismantle the entire ecosystem of drug trafficking. He also given instructions to all the SSPs to maintain peace and harmony by ensuring police presence at all important places, intensify domination operations and other preventive and detective measures. He also briefed the police force regarding the current security scenario and reviewed counter-terror strategies. As part of the outreach, the DGP Punjab also engaged directly with officers across all ranks including station house officers (SHOs). Thane police seize mephedrone worth 32 crore on Nashik-thane Highway, two arrested
Thane: The Thane Crime Branch Unit-2, Bhiwandi seized 15.9 kg of Mephedrone (MD) worth Rs 31.84 crore in a meticulously planned operation on the Nashik–Thane highway near Ranjanoli, Bhiwandi. Two history sheeters were arrested along with their vehicles and other valuables. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Amarsingh Jadhav said, "Following the police chief's directive to intensify action against drug trafficking , our team acted swiftly on credible intelligence and executed a successful highway interception, leading to one of the biggest Mephedrone seizures in recent times." "Preliminary investigations suggest the drugs were meant for distribution in Thane and Mumbai. We are probing the supply chain to identify the source and wider network," he said.
