Huge twist in trial of men accused of kidnapping, stripping and beating cricket great Stuart MacGill

Daily Mail11 hours ago
One of the six men who had been charged with the alleged kidnapping of former Australian cricketer Stuart MacGill has had his charges dropped just before he was due to go to trial.
In May, MacGill avoided jail time after a jury found him guilty of taking part in the supply of $330,000 worth of cocaine.
The 54-year-old is serving a community sentence after the jury found him guilty of a lesser charge of supplying an indictable quantity of cocaine.
However, the jury found him not guilty of taking part in a large commercial drug supply.
MacGill had pleaded not guilty but admitted that he had introduced his partner's brother to his drug dealer, adding that he had not played a part in the drug deal.
The jury later rejected that claim, with Judge Nicole Noman sentencing MacGill to an intensive corrections order which will span one year and 10 months.
Judge Noman told the court that MacGill had played an indispensable role in facilitating the drug deal.
'His role was essential to bring the parties together and for the transaction to occur,' the judge said.
The events that transpired later led to MacGill allegedly being kidnapped.
A group of six men had been due to stand trial on Monday at the NSW District Court in Parramatta.
The group included Frederick Schaaf, Richard Schaaf, Elijah Schaaf, Marino Sotiropoulos, Son Minh Nguyen and Vaeluagaomatagi Feilo.
But the court heard on Monday that the Director of Public Prosecutions had chosen to withdraw the charges against Elijah Schaaf.
Elijah Schaaf had pleaded not guilty to one count of being an accessory after the fact to kidnapping.
He also pleaded not guilty to a separate charge of being an accessory before the fact to take or detain in company with an intention to get an advantage.
The other men have all pleaded not guilty to their alleged roles in the kidnapping.
MacGill was alleged to have been kidnapped from outside his Cremorne apartment in April 2021.
The former Australian cricketer was allegedly taken to a property at Bringelly.
It is alleged he was assaulted and threatened with a gun. Alleged demands for money were also made. MacGill was allegedly held for an hour before he was released.
The right-arm leg spinner played 44 Test matches and three ODI matches for Australia.
He'd go on to take 208 wickets during his Test Career, while scoring 6038 runs.
In his domestic career, he'd play for New South Wales, Nottinghamshire, Somerset and Western Australia, taking 774 wickets before permanently retiring from cricket in 2012, after coming out of retirement to play for the Sydney Sixers for a season.

'Barking dog dispute' turns bloody as three people are allegedly stabbed in a quiet NSW street

A long-running neighbourhood feud over a barking dog has allegedly erupted into a violent stabbing that left three people in hospital. A heated argument allegedly spiralled into a bloody knife fight just after 4pm on Monday in Gossimer Close, Killarney Vale, on the NSW Central Coast. The dispute allegedly began when a 23-year-old woman arrived with her grandmother to discuss an ongoing problem with local dogs. She started speaking to Alicia Wright, 33, and her partner, Nathan Scanlan, 20. Minutes later, the quiet cul-de-sac transformed into a crime scene, with more than 20 police and emergency vehicles flooding the street, as paramedics tended to the three injured. 'I have never seen anything like it,' a shocked neighbour told the Daily Mail. 'We heard all this yelling outside and then Alicia hit the ground hard. 'She plays NRLW and is a tough girl, but you could hear the thud up the road. 'It was awful.' 'Then other neighbours started running into the street and tried pulling everyone apart.' Neighbours allege Scanlan, who only recently moved into the area, arrived at the scene just as the confrontation escalated. They said Scanlan and Ms Wright, a mother-of-two, only began dating last month. 'He is Alicia's new boyfriend and he turned up just as it started,' another witness said. 'This argument over dogs has been going on for a while now, but it's not either of their dogs,' one neighbour added. 'It involves a family from the other street, but someone keeps walking their dog past their house. 'They have had enough because it sets all the dogs in the area off and they came up to try to sort it out. 'In the end, Nathan and Alicia and the member of the other family all got taken to hospital.' The 23-year-old was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital with critical injuries, while Ms Wright was taken by paramedics to the same hospital in a serious condition. Scanlan was arrested and taken to Gosford Hospital in a stable condition, where he remains under police guard, a NSW Police spokesman said. By Tuesday morning, police confirmed both women were in a stable condition. A pink pocketknife is believed to have been found in bushes near the crime scene. 'The police came back again at about 7.30pm that night and searched the area and Alicia's house,' a neighbour said. 'There was blood everywhere, even smeared up someone's wall, it was such a mess.' On Tuesday morning, the street was quiet except for one resident hosing bloody stains from their front steps. Another neighbour, who handed her CCTV footage to police, said she was 'traumatised' by the events. 'It was just awful,' she said. 'There were kids out here and everything.' Police have since charged Scanlan with assault occasioning actual bodily harm (in company), possessing a prohibited drug, affray, and driving while disqualified. He was refused bail. Police have urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.

Ex-Premier League star given SEVEN-YEAR prison sentence for role in multi-million-pound drug smuggling ring

A former Premier League footballer has been given seven years in prison for his role in a multi-million-pound drug smuggling ring. Ronnie Stam, 41, who played for Wigan for three years from 2010, was described by the Dutch Public Prosecution Service as a big hitter in the criminal underworld. Stam was charged with trying to smuggle £48m-worth of cocaine (2,217 kilos) into the Netherlands. The prosecution asked for the judge to give Stam a 13-year sentence but he was found not guilty of two of the more serious charges. The former Dutch title-winner was instead convicted of smuggling 724kg of cocaine into the Netherlands in addition to MDMA and possession of laughing gas (nitrous oxide). At the courthouse in Breda, it was also alleged that Stam and his accomplices were in possession of 18 litres of nitrous oxide and tried to smuggle 20kg of drugs from South America - saying he laundered £2m. He revealed that his payment would have been the value of one kilo. Stam insisted that was the extent of his involvement in the plot and confessed to regretting becoming involved with criminals. The former footballer retired from playing back in 2016 before turning to crime. He will have to repay £1.7m in illegally gained profits as part of his punishment in addition to the seven year prison sentence. Stam enjoyed a successful playing career, featuring for Wigan 73 times and winning the Dutch Eredivisie with FC Twente under Steve McLaren before that. After his time in the north of England, he moved to Belgian side Standard Liege before re-joining boyhood club NAC Breda for one season before hanging up his boots.
