Mexico wins CONCACAF Gold Cup group after 0-0 draw against Costa Rica

Washington Post23-06-2025
LAS VEGAS — Mexico tied Costa Rica 0-0 on Sunday night to win Group A of the CONCACAF Gold Cup and will play Saudi Arabia in the quarterfinals.
Mexico's Santiago Giménez appeared to score on a bicycle kick in the fourth minute of second-half stoppage time but the goal was disallowed by Guatemalan referee Mario Escobar following a video review. Giménez appeared to be offside when Carlos Rodríguez lofted the ball into the penalty area following a free kick. Orlando Galo's headed clearance attempt went in front of the goal to Giménez.

Raiders' Brock Bowers has a new haircut after record-setting rookie season

Raiders' Brock Bowers has a new haircut after record-setting rookie season originally appeared on The Sporting News Brock Bowers is making a big change after a record-setting rookie season for the Las Vegas Raiders. He got quite the haircut. Bowers' hair was threatening to recede already, so he went with the simple option: a shaved head. Raiders fans all over social media were getting pumped about Bowers' decision. It shouldn't really impact him on the field one way or the other, but that's OK. He's already a superstar at the tight end position. MORE: Shedeur Sanders shows his NFL Draft slide might've been a mistake As a rookie, Bowers had 1,194 yards receiving. That broke Mike Ditka's long-standing record by 118 yards. The next record Bowers can set his sights on is the single-season receiving yards record for any tight end. That's held by Chiefs legend Travis Kelce, at 1,416. ESPN's Seth Walder predicts Bowers to break it, if not this season, than in the next few. "The start to his career needs no introduction: He had 1,194 receiving yards as a rookie, meaning his upside is literally record-breaking potential," Walder wrote. MORE: Taylor Swift is coming on Travis Kelce's podcast The Raiders took Bowers as the No. 13 overall pick out of Georgia in 2024. People have seen his potential coming since the moment he stepped on campus in Athens as a freshman. Bowers is 6-foot-4, 230 pounds and even was handed the ball for running plays at times as a rookie. Now, he's got a legitimate NFL quarterback in Geno Smith, too. The sky is the limit, especially with a smooth top of the head to keep Bowers light, aerodynamic and ready to dominate the league. Roma in talks to sign Aston Villa winger Leon Bailey

Roma are in discussions with Aston Villa over a potential deal to sign winger Leon Bailey. The 28-year-old signed a new contract in February 2024, which runs until 2027. He is one of multiple players available to leave the Midlands club, including Alex Moreno and Leander Dendoncker. Clubs in Turkey — including Besiktas — and the Saudi Pro League are also keen on Bailey but Roma are emerging as the strongest suitor, after discussions took place over a Saudi move earlier in the window. Advertisement A bid has yet to be tabled but talks continue between Villa and their Italian counterparts. If a move materialises, Bailey would become Roma's seventh summer signing and their second from the Premier League, as Brighton & Hove Albion striker Evan Ferguson has joined on loan. Besiktas have signed six players in this window. Bailey was used increasingly sparingly last season by head coach Unai Emery, appearing in 24 top-flight games and starting only 14. He began to struggle for form towards the end of the previous campaign, when he played through injury and illness and suffered a couple of knocks that disrupted his start to 2024-25. 'Every day I am speaking with him about it (his form),' Emery said at a press conference last year. 'He is accepting my challenge to get the best of him like last year. We need him. Leon is a very specific player for us as a winger, threatening in behind.' The Jamaica international joined Villa in August 2021 for a fee in the region of £30million from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen. He has made 144 appearances for the club, recording 22 goals and 24 assists. The winger helped Unai Emery's side qualify for the Champions League in 2023-24 with a fourth-place finish in the Premier League and reached the semi-finals of the Conference League. Bailey had spells with Austrian lower-league sides Anif Jugend and Liefering and Slovak team AS Trencin before beginning his senior career with Belgian Pro League club Genk. He made 77 appearances for the team before moving to Leverkusen in January 2017. () Spot the pattern. Connect the terms Find the hidden link between sports terms Play today's puzzle

Clarendon Hills hosting watch party for Little League World Series debut

The village of Clarendon Hills, Illinois, is hosting a big watch party for their hometown team on Wednesday as they play in the Little League World Series. The Clarendon Hills Little League baseball team earned their first trip to the Little League World Series after winning the Great Lakes Region championship last week. They'll face the Las Vegas team in the Little League World Series opener at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. "We're really excited to be here, and I think the boys, we've let them for the first 24-36 hours just enjoy it, but you know, they're ballplayers, and they compete every time they enter the field, and why can't it be us? Everyone has a chance, and we're really excited to see all our hard work pay off," Clarendon Hills Little League coach Brian Herold said. It's a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the team, who will get to meet players from all around the world. "We're staying in a dorm, we're neighbors with Australia to one side and Canada and the Mountain team downstairs," Herold said. Clarendon Hills is hosting a watch party downtown starting at 1 p.m. at Prospect and Park avenues. The game will be shown on a jumbo screen, and it's BYOC – bring your own chair. There will also be giveaways at the gazebo at Sloan Memorial Triangle.
