Though there is no specific threat input as of now from any part of the state, since the ULFA(I) and NSCN (K-YA) have called for boycott as well as shutdown, some people may try 'mischievous acts" during the celebrations, he told PTI.
The police have identified the sensitive areas, and extra precaution has been taken in those locations, the IPS officer stated.
'Night domination has been ensured by joint teams of security forces across these places. Regular patrolling has also been intensified since the last one month," he said.
The senior police officer said he is hopeful of peaceful Independence Day celebrations this year.
'The response to celebrate the 79th Independence Day is overwhelming. People from all walks of life are eagerly waiting for the day to take part in the historic moment. Nobody is concerned about the boycott call," he claimed.
On August 11, the United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) and National Socialist Council of Nagaland had issued a joint statement calling for a 'boycott" of the Independence Day celebrations, and an 18-hour 'total shutdown" from Thursday midnight to 6 pm on Friday.
The state-level celebration of Independence Day will be held at the Veterinary College Playground, Khanapara in the state capital.
Guwahati has been under a thick blanket of security cover for the last several days in view of the boycott call.
The elaborate arrangements assume significance as the authorities were left red-faced after ULFA(I) claimed to have planted bombs in 24 locations across Assam to trigger serial blasts on Independence Day last year.

The Gujarat Education Department has sought a report after a primary school in Bhavnagar staged an Independence Day play in which burqa-clad girls were shown as 'terrorists', sparking protests from local Muslim groups. The District Education Officer issued a notice to the Bhavnagar Municipal School Board, which runs the institution, asking for an explanation within seven days, officials said on Wednesday (August 20, 2025). Munjal Badmaliya, Administrative Officer of the Bhavnagar Municipal School Board, said the all-girls primary school in Kumbharwada had presented the play based on Operation Sindoor as part of Independence Day celebrations. 'The District Education Officer received a representation alleging that the play hurt Muslim sentiments. We have been asked to submit a factual report within seven days,' he said. The Municipal School Board has appointed a coordinator to probe the incident. A preliminary inquiry had indicated that the teachers and the Principal had no intention of offending any community, Mr. Badmaliya added. 'Students playing the role of terrorists were told to cover their faces with black cloth, but they used burqas as those were easily available,' he said. The Administrative Officer maintained that the purpose of the play was to honour the armed forces for their role in Operation Sindoor, and not to target any religion. Maharashtra govt to recruit 15,631 police, prison constables
Agency: Mumbai, Aug 20 (PTI) The Maharashtra government on Wednesday approved recruitment of 15,631 police and prison constables. In a special concession, candidates who crossed the maximum age limit in 2022 and 2023 too will be allowed to apply, said a Government Resolution (GR) or order. Earlier, only 50 per cent of posts could be filled up through direct recruitment, but the restriction was waived in view of the pressing need for personnel, the GR said. The recruitment process will be carried out at the divisional level and an OMR (Optical Mark Recognition) -based written examination will be conducted. The examination fee will be Rs 450 for open category candidates and Rs 350 for reserved categories. The15,631 posts include those which became vacant in 2024 and those which will be vacant in 2025. There are 12,399 posts of police constables, 234 police constable drivers, 25 Bandsmen, 2,393 armed police constables and 580 prison constables.
