Multi-layer security in Assam for I-Day after boycott call by militant groups

News186 days ago
Guwahati, Aug 14 (PTI) A multi-layer security arrangement has been put in place across parade grounds and other sensitive places in Assam, after a few banned militant groups called for a 'boycott" of Independence Day celebrations, a top police officer said on Thursday.
Though there is no specific threat input as of now from any part of the state, since the ULFA(I) and NSCN (K-YA) have called for boycott as well as shutdown, some people may try 'mischievous acts" during the celebrations, he told PTI.
The police have identified the sensitive areas, and extra precaution has been taken in those locations, the IPS officer stated.
'Night domination has been ensured by joint teams of security forces across these places. Regular patrolling has also been intensified since the last one month," he said.
The senior police officer said he is hopeful of peaceful Independence Day celebrations this year.
'The response to celebrate the 79th Independence Day is overwhelming. People from all walks of life are eagerly waiting for the day to take part in the historic moment. Nobody is concerned about the boycott call," he claimed.
On August 11, the United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) and National Socialist Council of Nagaland had issued a joint statement calling for a 'boycott" of the Independence Day celebrations, and an 18-hour 'total shutdown" from Thursday midnight to 6 pm on Friday.
The state-level celebration of Independence Day will be held at the Veterinary College Playground, Khanapara in the state capital.
Guwahati has been under a thick blanket of security cover for the last several days in view of the boycott call.
The elaborate arrangements assume significance as the authorities were left red-faced after ULFA(I) claimed to have planted bombs in 24 locations across Assam to trigger serial blasts on Independence Day last year.
Police had later unearthed 'bomb-like substances" from at least 10 places, including four in Guwahati. PTI TR RBT

Bhavnagar school play depicting burqa-clad ‘terrorists' triggers controversy; probe ordered

The Gujarat Education Department has sought a report after a primary school in Bhavnagar staged an Independence Day play in which burqa-clad girls were shown as 'terrorists', sparking protests from local Muslim groups. The District Education Officer issued a notice to the Bhavnagar Municipal School Board, which runs the institution, asking for an explanation within seven days, officials said on Wednesday (August 20, 2025). The move came after members of the Muslim community, under the banner of Bandharan Bachao Samiti, demanded stern action against the teachers for depicting their community 'in a bad light'. A video of the August 15 performance, widely circulated on social media, shows girls dressed in white dancing to a song praising Kashmir's beauty before three students in burqas, carrying toy guns, storm the stage and 'shoot' them. A background audio referred to terrorists killing civilians during the Pahalgam attack. Munjal Badmaliya, Administrative Officer of the Bhavnagar Municipal School Board, said the all-girls primary school in Kumbharwada had presented the play based on Operation Sindoor as part of Independence Day celebrations. 'The District Education Officer received a representation alleging that the play hurt Muslim sentiments. We have been asked to submit a factual report within seven days,' he said. The Municipal School Board has appointed a coordinator to probe the incident. A preliminary inquiry had indicated that the teachers and the Principal had no intention of offending any community, Mr. Badmaliya added. 'Students playing the role of terrorists were told to cover their faces with black cloth, but they used burqas as those were easily available,' he said. The Administrative Officer maintained that the purpose of the play was to honour the armed forces for their role in Operation Sindoor, and not to target any religion. 'We are examining the issue from all angles and will submit a detailed report to the District Education Officer,' he said. (With inputs from PTI)

VIDEO | Delhi: Roman Babushkin, Deputy Chief of Mission, Russian Embassy in India surprised everyone welcoming them in Hindi during his press conference.'Shuruat karengey… Shree Ganesh Karengey!" Babushkin said as he began his media interaction. (Full video available on PTI… — Press Trust of India (@PTI_News) August 20, 2025 Addressing questions from reporters, Babushkin said Russia will continue to keep oil flowing to India despite tariffs imposed by the US. He also said the US pressure on India for its procurement of Russian crude oil is 'unjustified". His remarks came against the backdrop of strain in India's ties with the US following President Donald Trump doubling tariffs on Indian goods to 50 per cent that included an additional penalty of 25 per cent for purchasing Russian crude oil. 'Russia is the largest producer of oil and India is the largest consumer. Any kind of unilateral action leads to disruptions in supply chains, imbalance in pricing policies and destabilisation of global markets, endangering the energy security of developing countries," Babushkin said. 'It is a challenging situation for New Delhi, but we have trust in our ties. We are confident that India-Russia energy cooperation will continue notwithstanding the external pressure," the envoy further informed. India has condemned the US tariffs, calling them 'unfair, unjustified and unreasonable". Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that India would not compromise on the interests of its farmers, livestock rearers and fishermen. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
