LEAFS NOTES: Gilmour-Marner connection now long distance

From the moment a young Mitch Marner stepped on the ice as a Maple Leaf, the Doug Gilmour comparisons began. Article content Of similar height and weight, both 100-point playmaking OHL juniors, strong defensively, hard to hit, they were also linked by sweater No. 93, which Mitch wore in London in homage to his father Paul's favourite Leaf. In his current role as a club ambassador, Gilmour saw Marner up close many times. Article content Article content Article content 'I've been a big fan of Mitch's from the very beginning,' Gilmour told the Toronto Sun on Wednesday. 'One of my favourite players to watch. He's come a long way.' Article content While Marner trails only Gilmour in franchise post-season assists — 60 to 50 — it was playoff intangibles that clearly separate them. The Gilmour-led Leafs of the 1990s played in two conference finals and eight different series in four years, while Marner never got past the second-round in nine seasons. Article content It's a big reason Gilmour — and everyone else in these parts — will have to watch Marner from afar as a Vegas Golden Knight. Seeing him wear a mustard-toned 93 — digits he couldn't have in Toronto as it was retired for Gilmour — will take some getting used to. Article content 'It's going to be hard days for Leaf fans to see him,' predicted the 62-year-old Gilmour. 'He's a guy that can play everywhere in your lineup: Power play, penalty killing and he can get you 100 points. Article content 'But it's the business, right? And sometimes the business is not fun. Hey, I played for seven different teams (St. Louis, Calgary, Toronto, New Jersey, Chicago, Buffalo and Montreal). My young daughter would be worried sometimes and say 'Dad, they say you're no good', but I'd tell her 'Somebody else will always want you.' ' Article content Marner left for Vegas with an eight-year, $96 million US deal, agreed to in his final hours as a Maple Leaf. But barring a Leafs-Knights Stanley Cup final, he will be back in town only once a season. Article content Players will insist the most under-rated members of a team are its equipment managers. Article content 'One hundred per cent,' said Gilmour. 'You just look at all the hours they put in during the day. And at night, when we'd get off a plane and able to go right to bed, they're on their way to the rink to get our stuff ready.' Article content It was a jolt to many Leafs and former NHLers to learn a decade ago that Scott McKay, Toronto's long-time equipment man in the Pat Quinn era, had a cancer diagnosis. He has survived, but the battle continues and friends want to help him raise funds and awareness in a big way. Article content On Thursday, Gilmour, Curtis Joseph, Shayne Corson, Brad May and Raffi Torres will reveal Street Hockey For The Cure, to benefit the Canadian Cancer Society, the Scott McKay Foundation and the St. Michael's Hospital Foundation. Proceeds of the Sept. 13-14 tournament near the grounds of the Hotel X at Exhibition Place will go to reducing the financial burden of cancer patients throughout treatment, such as the Wheels For Hope transportation program.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. earns the nod as all-star starter for the fourth time

It's five and counting for Vladimir Guerrero Jr., the face of the Blue Jays' franchise, whose $500-million contract extension kicks in next season. Article content By the time his days in Toronto are completed, Vlad Jr. is almost certain to eclipse his father's all-star appearance total. His hall of fame dad was named nine times to baseball's mid-summer classic. Article content Article content Following the completion of Wednesday's voting, Vlad Jr. was named to his fifth career all-star game, which this year will be staged July 15 at Truist Park in Atlanta. Article content Guerrero will start for the American League team at first base after he outpolled New York Yankees star Paul Goldschmidt. Guerrero earned 75% of the vote, marking the fourth time in his career to earn the starting nod. Article content Vlad Jr. went on record last week when the Jays were in Boston that he won't take part in the home run derby. Article content Teammate Alejandro Kirk also was one of two players on the ballot to determine the starting American League catcher. Although Kirk is in the midst of a successful season, his chances were next to none given the season Seattle's Cal Raleigh has posted in leading all of baseball with 33 home runs. Article content In the first stage of voting, which determined the first two all-star starters, Yankees superstar Aaron Judge was the leading vote-getter in the AL, while L.A. Dodgers megastar Shohei Ohtani led the way in the National League. Article content

Blue Jays reinstate reliever Yimi Garcia; Fluharty demoted

Article content The Blue Jays' bullpen, which has somehow persevered in the face of being stretched to the limit, was thrown a lifeline well before the first pitch was thrown Wednesday in the third game of a four-game series against the visiting New York Yankees. Article content Following the recent return from injury by Nick Sandlin, the Jays welcomed back Yimi Garcia, who landed on the injured list on May 24 because of right shoulder impingement. Article content Article content While Sandlin has done well in low leverage, Garcia is a high-leverage reliever capable of handling the duties of a closer, a role in which Jeff Hoffman has seemingly found his groove following a tough stretch that saw the right-hander get roughed up in the ninth inning of games when the Jays were nursing a lead. Article content The way Hoffman has responded of late, the way Yariel Rodriguez continues to shine in whatever role he's asked to embrace, and with Garcia back in the fold, the back end of the Jays' pen finds itself in the best shape it has been this season. Article content Prior to his injury, Garcia recorded three saves and six holds, while earning a 3.15 ERA and 1.05 WHIP in 20 innings. Article content When he has been on his game, Garcia has looked just as formidable as Hoffman. Article content Toronto didn't require Hoffman in its rout of the Bronx Bombers on Canada Day, but it did turn to the first-year Jays closer in the series opener Monday when Hoffman helped preserve a 5-4 win. Article content A day earlier, he retired the side on strikeouts in Boston as the Jays took the series from the Boston Red Sox. Article content Hoffman entered Wednesday with 19 saves, third-highest among AL closers. Article content In his past 3.0 innings, Hoffman has recorded five strikeouts. Article content Depending on how the Jays plan to line up their bullpen, the possibility does exist of using Y-Rod in the seventh inning followed by Garcia and Hoffman. Article content Matchups dictate so much, but the bottom line is the Jays are well positioned in close late-game scenarios knowing three quality relievers, each a right-hander, are now available. Article content To make room for Garcia on the 26-man active roster, the Jays sent left-hander Mason Fluharty to the triple-A Buffalo Bisons. Article content Truth be told, Fluharty needed some kind of a reset, which can only be achieved in the minors. Article content When he did pitch in relief, Fluharty often did his job on most nights. He did hit a rough stretch of late. Article content
