National Integration Tour of engineering students commences from Gangtok
Gangtok, Aug 9 (PTI) The National Integration Tour (NIT), in which 20 engineering students of Sikkim will visit prominent institutes in various places of the country, began from here on Saturday.
The NIT, which will continue till August 17, was organised by the 17 Mountain Division of the Army, which is headquartered in the Sikkim Capital.
The NIT team comprises 20 engineering students, including eight females, from remote and underdeveloped regions of Sikkim, teachers and army personnel, according to an official statement.
The venue of the NIT includes Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Mysuru, where they will visit premier education institutions, leading scientific and technological establishments such as ISRO, Infosys, Film City and interact with industry leaders and technological start-ups, the statement said.
The students will also visit places of cultural and historical importance and meet the Governor of Telangana. The tour will culminate at Raj Bhavan with an interaction with the Governor of Sikkim.
The statement said that the objective of the tour is to broaden the horizons of young minds who have limited access to such experiences due to geographical and socio-economic constraints.
S Rathore, Major General-cum-GOC Black Cat Division (Gangtok military station), flagged off the NIT and interacted with the students.
He encouraged the students to imbibe the value of diversity, mutual respect, strive for excellence and patriotism during the tour, said the statement.
During the flagging-off ceremony, the female students tied rakhis to army personnel, praying for their safety and long life. PTI COR NN

Jammu Rail Division auctions LCD monitors to raise revenue
Agency: PTI New Delhi, Aug 12 (PTI) The Jammu Rail Division has auctioned all LCD monitors installed at ticket reservation counters and other places in the whole division to publicity companies for one to five years, to increase revenue. 'On August 11, 2025, we declared the result of the e-auction, which was held on July 4, 2025. We have awarded the contract to various firms for Rs 9,00,990 for the next one year and Rs 53,15,841 for the next five years," a railway official said. According to railways, the Digital Display Information System (DDIS)-LCD monitors have been placed outside each Ticket Reservation Counter, integrated with the Railway Ticket System (CRIS). 'The screen is thoughtfully divided into two distinct sections. The lower 30 per cent is dedicated to displaying real-time ticket information for each commuter, which is essential for verification before ticket booking," the official said. The remaining 70 per cent is used for presenting entertainment content and ads to commuters awaiting their turn, he said. At the Pathankot Cantt Railway Station of Jammu Division, the Pay and Use toilet block has been allotted to a company for operation for Rs 7,66,669 for the first year and Rs 23,00,007 for the next three years, the official said. The division also auctioned Seating-cum-Luggage (SLR) trains. 'SLRs of train numbers 12588, 16032 and 12476 were allotted for various trips for Rs 5,19,379, Rs 1,17,32,805 and Rs 22,44,040, respectively, for two years," the official said. Similarly, SLRs for train numbers 12478 and 14692 were allotted for various trips for Rs 22,38,979 and Rs 21,36,645 for two years. Uchit Singhal, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Jammu Division, said, 'This system is a non-revenue income system operated by the Commercial Department in Indian Railways, which includes commercial promotion, parking, pay and use parcel leasing, ATM, etc. Its allocation has been done successfully through e-auction." Is It Worth Bearing Heavy Tariffs For Cheaper Russian Oil; Has India Made A Dangerous Bargain?
New Delhi: Nobel Prize-winning economist Abhijit Banerjee has urged India to reflect on the cost of cheaper Russian oil. He questioned whether paying high U.S. tariffs is worth the savings. His comments came days after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 25% extra tariff on Indian goods. The action targets India's continued large-scale purchases of discounted Russian crude. With the imposition of new tariff, Indian products entering the U.S. market will now face a total duty of 50%. This marks one of the highest rates imposed by Trump on any country. The additional tariff takes effect on August 27. The long-discussed India-US trade deal remains stalled. Washington seeks greater access to India's farm and dairy sectors, while New Delhi has held back on concessions. The impact could be severe. About $27 billion worth of Indian exports without special trade exemptions may lose competitiveness in the United States. Speaking to news agency PTI on the sidelines of an event at BML Munjal University, Banerjee said the government should weigh options carefully. He suggested exploring whether the United States would remove tariffs if India halted Russian oil imports. India remains the largest global buyer of Russian crude. In July, refiners purchased 1.6 million barrels per day. For August and September, no new orders have been placed. Black Sea oil now offers a discount of only about $2 per barrel. In 2024-25, India imported 88 million tonnes of Russian oil. This formed a large share of the 245 million tonnes of total crude imports. Oil contracts for August and September were finalised before Trump's tariff announcement on August 7. Banerjee emphasised that at a 25% tariff, some Indian exports had already lost their price advantage. Raising it to 50% may not change much for those products. He added that policy circles are already discussing a cut in Russian crude purchases. On the economy, he described the current year's outlook as weaker than expected. He cited low private investment and pressure on the middle class. He pointed to hiring freezes in major firms such as the Tata Consultancy Service (TCS) and stagnant wages in the information technology (IT) sector. These issues, he said, remain unresolved. India's seafood sector is already feeling the strain. The Seafood Exporters Association of India (SEAI) has urged the commerce and finance ministries for urgent relief. It says nearly $2 billion in shrimp exports face serious obstacles in the U.S. market due to Trump's tariff. The SEAI seeks a 30% increase in working capital through soft loans, with interest subsidies and a 240-day moratorium on loans for pre- and post-packing operations. SEAI Secretary-General K.N. Raghavan told PTI the shrimp industry is under heavy stress and needs immediate government intervention.

UP govt leases land for Hyderabads varsity campus in Lucknow at Re 1 per year
Lucknow, Aug 12 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh government has transferred 2.32 hectares of land for the construction of a permanent campus of the English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad to promote quality education in English and foreign languages. The land is located in Chakauli village of Pargana Bijnor in the Sarojini Nagar tehsil of Lucknow district on lease at the rate of Re 1 per year, an official statement issued here said. At the permanent campus in Lucknow, the central university will run regular programmes like BA (Honours) English, MA English, MA Linguistics, MA English Literature, Post Graduate Diploma in the Teaching of English (PGDTE) and PhD along with part-time courses in French, German, Russian and Spanish languages. At present, the university is temporarily operating from a complex at Kanpur Road in Lucknow. At the land transfer ceremony on Tuesday, Higher Education Minister Yogendra Upadhyay, who was also the chief guest, said that the state government is committed to providing the youth of the state with linguistic education of global standards. He expressed confidence that the construction of the permanent campus will lead to unprecedented growth in the quality of education and facilities. The university's Vice Chancellor, Prof N Nagaraju, expressed gratitude towards the state government, saying that this land transfer is a historic step for the long-term development of the institution and that the Lucknow Campus will be developed into an excellent centre for linguistic education and research.
