Facebook group sharing indecent images of girls shut down by MCMC

By: Bernama Text Size: JOHOR BAHRU: A Facebook group dubbed 'Grup Budak-budak Sekolah Rendah', which allegedly circulated indecent images of teenage girls, has been shut down, said Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching. She said the Ministry of Communications, through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), had contacted Meta to disable the Facebook account.
Advertisement 'I do not wish to comment further as the investigation is ongoing, but I would like to stress that MCMC will continue to work with the police to take follow-up action and carry out further investigations,' she said after attending a charity sale and cultural performance programme at a shopping mall here today. Social media influencer Mek Yun, 28, whose real name is Wee Yun Nee, had earlier exposed the existence of the group and urged the authorities to act swiftly to curb the spread of immoral content. According to Teo, the MCMC, in collaboration with the police, launched Op Pedo last year, resulting in the arrest of 13 individuals and the discovery of more than 40,000 child sexual abuse materials (CSAM) and other pornographic content. Meanwhile, she said the government was actively implementing the Safe Internet Campaign (KIS), targeting students at the primary, secondary and tertiary education levels. 'To date, the MCMC has carried out the programme in 53 schools, involving 11,389 participants comprising pupils, students, teachers and parents. 'Our target from May to August is to implement the KIS in 344 schools nationwide, including at least 20 schools in Johor,' she said. Teo said the campaign focused on educating students about cyberbullying, the importance of personal data security, and the dangers of interacting with strangers online. 'We encourage all interested schools to contact the MCMC office so that we can arrange training sessions and talks on digital safety,' she said. Cambodia seeks ICJ ruling over border tensions with Thailand
BANGKOK: Cambodia said on Sunday it had asked the International Court of Justice to resolve its border disputes with Thailand, after a flare-up in their long-running row led the Southeast Asian neighbours to mobilise troops on both sides of the border. A Cambodian soldier was killed in a brief skirmish on May 28 in a confrontation over the 820-km (510-mile) frontier, parts of which are undemarcated and claimed by both nations. "Cambodia chooses a peaceful resolution based on international law through the ICJ mechanism for solving the border dispute," Prime Minister Hun Manet posted on his Facebook page. The post showed a picture of Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn holding an envelope that Hun Manet said contained a formal letter to the ICJ in The Hague, often called the World Court. The Thai Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Cambodia's move. Bangkok has previously said it has never recognised the court's jurisdiction and prefers to settle the disputes through bilateral mechanisms. Talks on border demarcation over the weekend between officials from both countries were inconclusive with both sides pledging to de-escalate tensions and continue dialogue. Cambodia said in a statement that it had proposed to Thailand the two countries should jointly bring the four dispute areas to the ICJ and that these areas should no longer be included in future bilateral talks on border demarcation. Cambodia also said that it would begin legal proceedings at the ICJ independently, despite Thailand's rejection of the court's jurisdiction. Thailand, on the other hand, made no mention of the four disputed areas or the ICJ, saying only that "both sides will continue discussions and joint implementation" of border demarcation talks. Thailand is set to host the next meeting in September. Hun Manet said the disputes at the four border areas, including the one where the fatal clash took place, are "complicated and have high risks of armed clashes and where bilateral mechanisms cannot solve." He did not disclose the contents of the letter, which were not visible in the picture. Cambodia has twice successfully sought ICJ resolutions, in 1962 on the ownership of the disputed Preah Vihear temple and in 2013, after it sought clarification of jurisdiction of the land around the temple. Although both governments have pledged to handle the issue through dialogue and to calm nationalist fervour, Bangkok has threatened to close the border and cut off electricity supplies to its neighbour. Phnom Penh announced it would cease buying Thai electric power, internet bandwidth and produce. It has also ordered local television stations not to screen Thai films.--REUTERS

Influencer Sofamann files police report over alleged fraud by ex-staff
BENTONG: Influencer and businessman Sofamann has lodged a police report against a former employee, alleging criminal breach of trust involving company funds. District police chief Superintendent Zaiham Mohd Kahar said the 27-year-old filed the report at 9.37pm on Friday. "According to the report, a 38-year-old male employee, who was a manager, is believed to have committed criminal breach of trust involving company funds. "Initial investigations estimate the total loss at approximately RM12,000," he said in a statement today. Zaiham said investigations are ongoing under Section 408 of the Penal Code. This section pertains to criminal breach of trust committed by a clerk or servant, and carries penalties including imprisonment and fines upon conviction. He urged the public to refrain from speculation as the case remains under investigation. Earlier, Sofamann in a post on his official Facebook account claimed that his employee had suddenly disappeared on May 9. In the same post, he alleged that he had discovered the man had misappropriated RM60,000 in company funds over six months. Following this, he filed a police report and advised the public to be cautious of his former employee's tactics.
