Glyphosate can trigger "multiple" types of cancer, even at safe levels, says study

The Study
The study, known as the Global Glyphosate Study, was led by the Cesare Maltoni Cancer Research Center of the Ramazzini Institute in Italy, and involved scientists from multiple international institutions. It examined the effects of glyphosate and two glyphosate-based herbicide formulations on Sprague Dawley rats, a common model for toxicology studies.
The study was designed this way: the rats were exposed to glyphosate starting from the prenatal stage and continuing for two years, which is essentially their lifespan.
The doses given through drinking water were 0.5, 5, and 50 mg per kg of body weight per day — levels that correspond to what regulatory agencies currently consider safe for humans or what they are exposed to.
The results
The results were shocking, to say the least. The study found a dose-related increase in both benign and malignant tumors in the rats exposed to glyphosate and its formulations compared to the control group.
These tumors appeared in multiple organs, including the liver, ovary, thyroid, nervous system, and blood (leukemia). Not only this, about 40% of leukemia-related deaths occurred early in the animals' lives, indicating that glyphosate exposure before birth heightened vulnerability to cancer at a young age, that can turn terminal.
This study confirms and expands on previous findings by the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), which classified glyphosate as 'probably carcinogenic to humans' in 2015 based on animal and limited human evidence.
However, glyphosate use has been constantly approved, due to insufficient evidence of risk. This new research challenges all previous approvals, by showing that even doses considered safe can cause cancer when exposure starts before birth.

The risk to humans
Though this study was conducted on rats, long-term animal studies are a standard method to predict cancer risk in humans.
Many carcinogens, such as asbestos and benzene, were first identified through rodent experiments only.
Why it is alarming
The finding that prenatal exposure increases cancer risk is particularly concerning, because it suggests that human fetuses and infants may be especially vulnerable. What makes this even more scary is that other studies have detected glyphosate in the urine of nearly all pregnant women tested in some regions, with higher levels linked to lower birth weight, and increased risk of neonatal intensive care admission.
Not only this, epidemiological studies have linked glyphosate exposure to an increased risk of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in humans, with some research showing up to a 41% higher risk among heavily exposed groups such as farmers and pesticide applicators. This growing body of evidence points to glyphosate as a potential health hazard not just for adults but also for developing babies.
What can you do to reduce the risk
Given the evidence, one must make all efforts to minimize glyphosate exposure, especially for pregnant women and children. Here are some practical steps:
Avoid using glyphosate-based herbicides at home or in gardens.
If you must use them, wear protective clothing such as long sleeves, long pants, closed-toe shoes, and chemical-resistant gloves, and a thick mask. Avoid spraying on windy days to prevent inhalation or skin contact.
Wash hands thoroughly (with soap and not just sanitizer) after handling glyphosate or touching plants that may have been sprayed. Avoid eating, drinking, or smoking during and immediately after application.
Keep children and pets away from treated areas for at least 24 hours or as recommended on labels.
Choose organic foods when possible. Glyphosate is banned in organic farming, and switching to organic has been shown to reduce glyphosate levels in the body by up to 70% within days.
Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly to reduce residues. Use warm water and baking soda if needed.

Social media user loses a part of her hearing because of AirPods; cautions against prolonged use; 'I have to live the rest of my life....'
AirPods, or any form of ear pieces, are a great tool to listen to music, movies, or just focus better at work. To top it all, they also come with noise cancellation features that block a major part of outdoor noise such as traffic, construction work etc, making working at home easy and seamless. However, their prolonged use might trigger some adverse effects as well. Loss in hearing Social media user Prachi Patel took to her IG handle to share a 'janhit mein jaari' message. According to Prachi, she had been using AirPods since a year, along with their noise cancellation feature, that creates a bit of suction. With overuse, this suction weakened the nerves of her middle ear (an air-filled cavity located between the eardrum, and the inner ear), resulting in her losing 20% hearing from one ear, and 35% in the other. To make matters worse, she also suffers from Tinnitus now, which is the perception of sound in the ears or head, when no external sound is present. Both conditions are largely irreversible. Prachi, while lamenting that she has to live with this for the 'rest of her life', urged people to not use any sort of ear piece for a long time. What caused Prachi's condition The continuous use of AirPods with noise cancellation technology, could potentially harm your hearing and trigger tinnitus when users overuse these devices. People who continuously block out background noises during the day may become more sensitive to sudden noises, or develop persistent ringing in their ears. The background sounds generated by AirPods temporarily help mask tinnitus symptoms, but using these devices excessively or at high volumes actually makes tinnitus symptoms worse. The same hearing risks exist for various types of earphones and headphones including wired and wireless earbuds, and over-the-ear headphones. Any earphone usage at high volume frequencies has been proven to elevate the risk of hearing damage and tinnitus regardless of the specific brand or type. Preventive measures To minimise AirPods-related risks, users should maintain sound levels under 85 decibels, while also taking periodic breaks for ear relaxation. Users can decrease ear pressure by adjusting their AirPod fit, and should refrain from continuous long-term use to prevent both short-term discomfort, and long-term hearing damage. Humane solution to street dogs: It's as simple as ABC
About 14 millennia ago, somewhere in Europe and probably simultaneously elsewhere, a unique bond developed between humans and wolves. Provided with scraps of food when approaching the early encampments and settlements of man, the wolf soon became a frequent and welcome visitor, warning man of imminent danger and later assisting him in the hunt for wild animals. Thus, began the domestication of the dog and the establishment of a bond between man and animals that has no equal. Today, man violates that bond by allowing dogs to breed excessively and then abandoning them in great numbers, thus creating hazards for the dogs themselves as well as a considerable health risk to human society. In 1990, Dr K Bogel, chief veterinarian of the World Health Organization (WHO) said: 'All too often, authorities confronted with the problems caused by these dogs have turned to mass destruction in the hope of finding a quick solution, only to discover that the destruction had to continue, year after year, with no end in sight'. Moreover, by reducing temporarily the population of free-roaming dogs, the authorities had improved the chances of survival of the remainder and provided fresh opportunities for newly-abandoned dogs. It is now becoming recognised that removal of surplus dogs cannot solve the problem unless combined with other measures such as registration and neutering of dogs and education of the public The Blue Cross of India in Chennai was the first to start sterilisation programmes for street dogs--indeed it was the first to propose such a programme and set up its first free clinic in 1966. Thirty years later in 1996, they were able to convince the Chennai Corporation headed by M Abul Hassan, IAS, regarding the viability of such an approach. We called it the ABC programme to show the authorities that control of the street dog population was as simple as ABC. The Blue Cross of India took up the total funding and was soon joined by People for Animals led by Maneka Gandhi. The Corporation's only expense was to continue to provide the dog-catching staff and vehicles. The number of cases of rabies which had been rising every year and had reached a high of 120 reported cases in 1996 began a steady decline and by 2007 it had dropped to zero. After three successive years of zero rabies, Chennai was declared rabies-free in 2010--the first metropolis in India to achieve this. Jaipur had also reached zero even earlier after starting a similar programme in 1996. Seeing the success of ABC-AR in Chennai and Jaipur, the Government of India's Animal Welfare Board adopted ABC-AR as its policy and recommended the Government to adopt it. Things moved swiftly and Parliament approved the ABC Rules in 2001 which stopped the poisoning or electrocution of street dogs and made ABC mandatory for all local bodies. With increased awareness and vaccination drives, rabies cases dropped by over 95% from WHO's 29,000 in 1996 to about 500 in 2024. Sadly, most municipalities did not implement ABC aggressively to reach the 70% coverage which would have stabilised the population. Sporadic ABC camps will not suffice. Since catching street dogs is the most traumatic part of the programme, many animal welfare groups supported street dog feeders only to get them to befriend the dogs so that they could be easily caught and sterilised and vaccinated. Many feeders, unfortunately, stopped with the feeding part and just began to dump newborn puppies at animal shelters. Armchair critics and keyboard warriors, in the meantime, instead of helping those groups struggling with overloaded shelters and large numbers of sterilisations, just kept using the double-edged sword of social media to find fault with what municipalities and local organisations were doing. The onset of Covid stopped most ABC programmes for well over a year, undoing years of work and virtually bringing everything back to square one. Having said all this, the recent order of the Supreme Court is totally impossible to implement. Putting captured street dogs into massive pounds will lead to massive and unbelievable cruelty. Such an experiment was tried out by a group called EAST in Taipei about 25 years ago. Virtually every dog of the thousands put in died due to infighting and unequal feeding--a clear case of the survival only of the fittest--till infections killed these too. Fortunately, a Buddhist monk who took over the organisation convinced the government to stop this inhuman practice and go in for an ABC programme. The Supreme Court order also goes against the ABC Rules and the orders of another two-judge bench. The order was also passed without giving a chance for other stakeholders to be heard. No municipality has the space or the funds required to run such pounds--euphemistically referred to as shelters. That ABC-AR works is not in doubt. Indeed, in Radford University's Milestones in World Environmental History ( , the ABC programme of the Blue Cross of India is listed as one of the milestones, right after Jane Goodall, in 1959. Let all of hope that better sense prevails and the three-judge bench formed by the Chief Justice of India, following protests from all over the country, puts the onus on all local bodies to fulfil their mandate of properly carrying out aggressive ABC programmes--the only viable solution to this important issue. Just as we have reduced rabies to a minor fraction over the last quarter century, a few years of an aggressive, sustained ABC-AR programme all over the country will ensure this. Let us be very honest about this--urban human population densities and road traffic make life for the dogs on the street difficult, too. But, as the nation that gave the world the word and the concept of ahimsa, and where Section 51(a)(g) of our Constitution requires us to show compassion to all life, we all have the moral obligation to tackle this issue in the most humane way possible.
