Kansas State golfer Carla Bernat thrilled to have teammates along for NCAA Championship

MANHATTAN — Kansas State golfer Carla Bernat has accomplished just about everything she could hope for as an individual in her college golf career, but one thing was missing.
She wanted to share the postseason experience with her Wildcat teammates, and she finally got the chance in her final go-round.

Not only did Bernat claim the individual title last week at the NCAA Lexington Regional, securing her place at nationals for a second straight year, thanks to a tie for second place, but the whole team is tagging along.
"It means everything," Bernat, a senior from Castellon, Spain, said of advancing the NCAA Championship, which gets underway Friday at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California. "I'm just really happy we made it.
"I've been wanting to go with my team to nationals for four years, so getting that done, I think I was more nervous playing the last hole in regionals than in Augusta, so that means everything."

Kansas State senior golfer Carla Bernat watches her tee shot during the third round of the NCAA Lexington Regional last Wednesday at the Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Ky.
If qualifying for nationals was the team highlight for Bernat, the individual high point to her senior season came last month when she won the Augusta National Women's Amateur title the week before The Master's. But it has been that kind of year.
Bernat's three individual titles tied the school single-season record, and her 69.91 scoring average is on track to break her own school record of 70.90 from last year. The results are reflected in her postseason honors as Big 12 player of the year and a finalist for the ANNIKA Award presented to the top golfer in Division I.

K-State coach Stew Burke, who initially recruited Bernat to Tulane three years ago, has had a front row seat for her entire college career, which featured two standout seasons with the Green Wave and then two more in Manhattan when she followed Burke from New Orleans in 2023.
What has impressed Burke more than Bernat's success in tournaments is the work she put in to get there.
"Honestly, it's the day-to-day things that she does," Burke said. "She came in as a freshman at Tulane, and she knew she needed to get stronger and faster. She needed to get a little bit better technically, she needed to get a little bit better in her decision making, with her mental game.
"And she did all of that. The plan was kind of laid out for her, and it's very easy to get sidetracked when you get good at one thing to then fall off on another thing."

Burke saw something special in Bernat from the first time he watched her on a recruiting trip to Spain when he was still the Tulane coach. Mostly, he saw the potential.
"She's got a little bit of an unconventional move, and she was not a good putter," he recalled. "It's probably one of her strengths now when we talk about the little things that she's improved upon.
"I think, for me, there was a high ceiling, and she wanted to know what she could improve upon in our first conversation. As a coach, that's a pretty rewarding thing, even in the recruiting process."
When Burke took the K-State job, Bernat didn't hesitate to join him for her final two seasons. Burke was familiar with Manhattan from a three-year stint as a Wildcat assistant coach from 2014-17, so he quickly sold her on the idea.

"(Burke) told me really good things about Manhattan and how supported it is by the fans, and how proud this town is about the university," Bernat said. "When I came here, I knew I wanted to stay here, because the facilities are amazing.
"The people are so nice compared to New Orleans. I think even when it's cold, it's nice here."
While Bernat's college career winds down over the coming week, Burke knows it won't be the last women's golf fans will see of her.
"She's going to do this for a living," he said. "She's going to do this for a long time, and having a small hand in her success is a big thing for Kansas State golf."

ESPN's Computer Model Releases Final Preseason National Title Pick

ESPN's Computer Model Releases Final Preseason National Title Pick originally appeared on The Spun. ESPN's computer model, the Football Power Index, has released its final preseason national title pick. The Football Power Index has finalized its preseason national title pick ahead of the first games of the 2025 regular season. Week Zero is here. We'll have five college football games played this Saturday, August 23 - dubbed Week Zero - before the rest of the country kicks off the following week. The first week of the season is highlighted by a matchup between two Top 25 teams in No. 17 Kansas State and No. 22 Iowa State. Ahead of the first games of the season in Week Zero, ESPN's computer model has finalized its preseason national title pick. ESPN's computer model, the Football Power Index, is a projection-based model that includes W-L predictions, conference winner predictions, College Football Playoff predictions and, ultimately, national title predictions. The Football Power Index is "a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team's performance going forward for the rest of the season. FPI represents how many points above or below average a team is. Projected results are based on 20,000 simulations of the rest of the season using FPI, results to date, and the remaining schedule," according to ESPN. The preseason national title pick is finalized ESPN's computer model sees four teams as having a realistic chance to win the College Football Playoff, which will once again feature 12 teams. The computer model is giving four teams a greater than 10 percent chance of winning it all. However, only one team can win the College Football Playoff. ESPN's computer model, the Football Power Index, likes preseason No. 1 Texas to win it all. It's going with the Longhorns to take down Georgia in the national title game. ESPN's computer model gives Texas a 25 percent chance of winning the national title, the biggest percentage chance of any team. Here's the complete Top 10: Texas - 25 percent Georgia - 13.6 percent Alabama - 11.3 percent Ohio State - 10.5 percent Penn State - 8.8 percent Notre Dame - 5.4 percent Oregon - 3.7 percent Tennessee - 3.2 percent Ole Miss - 2.1 percent Texas A&M - 2.1 percent ESPN's top college football analyst agrees with the computer model ESPN's top college football personality, Paul Finebaum - who has covered the sport for 50 years - agrees with the computer model. Finebaum, 70, sees Texas as "absolutely" the frontrunner to win it all. 'Absolutely,' Finebaum said on ESPN's 'Get Up' this summer. 'They have Arch Manning, in case you have not gotten that email from the front office. He is expected to be much better than Quinn Ewers. I was not that impressed with Quinn Ewers last year. I think Arch Manning, had he come in during the Cotton Bowl, may have had a better shot, may have even beaten Ohio State. 'He is going to be the leader of this team. They reloaded in the portal, to the tune of many millions and millions of dollars. I think Texas, other than having to go to Week 1, is in great shape.' Texas will look to prove itself right away, taking on No. 3 Ohio State in the opening game of the season. Kickoff between Texas and Ohio State is scheduled for noon E.T. "My first pick probably will not go over well with my friends in Ames, as I am an unofficial ambassador there — but I do like the Purple Cats in this one," Fallica wrote about the Kansas State-Iowa State tilt. "Defensively, the Cyclones allowed 5.4 yards per carry last year, which was 126th nationally. Whether that was due to linebacker injuries or the 3-3-3 scheme, we'll see. If they can't win the early downs on defense, and allow Avery Johnson, Dylan Edwards and Gabe Ervin to look at third-and-2 all game, K-State will be hard to stop." 2025 CFB Week 0 Odds: Chris 'The Bear' Fallica's Expert Pick, Best Bet

"Bear Bets" are real wagers that Chris "The Bear" Fallica is actually making. We're starting off the season with a big matchup in the Big 12 — what could be better? Kansas State vs. Iowa State is not only a battle of Big 12 squads, but it's also a contest between two teams ranked in the top 25. Which team comes out of this weekend unscathed? Glad you asked, because I have an answer. No. 17 Kansas State (-3) vs. No. 22 Iowa State My first pick probably will not go over well with my friends in Ames, as I am an unofficial ambassador there — but I do like the Purple Cats in this one. Last season, Iowa State clinched a 10-win season with a 29-21 win over K-State. But in that game, the Wildcats committed eight penalties, had a 21-yard field goal blocked, allowed a safety, were a combined 4-for-17 on third down and fourth down (one of which was a fourth-down drop on fourth-and-2 at the Iowa State 35 late in the game), and was minus-2 in turnovers. K-State also outgained the Cyclones by 40 yards. Whew, that was a mouthful. Got all that? That's what it took for one of the best teams in Iowa State history to escape, at home, with the win. That was a senior-laden bunch, and maybe it had some Illinois in it with four fourth-quarter comebacks. Will the transfers at wide receiver step right in to make up for the loss of Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel? If they can't, the offense will sputter. Defensively, the Cyclones allowed 5.4 yards per carry last year, which was 126th nationally. Whether that was due to linebacker injuries or the 3-3-3 scheme, we'll see. If they can't win the early downs on defense, and allow Avery Johnson, Dylan Edwards and Gabe Ervin to look at third-and-2 all game, K-State will be hard to stop. This number has come down some, as there was even a K-State -4 briefly posted at Circa and I will now jump in. I still love you, Ames, and can't wait to bring Big Noon Kickoff there in two weeks. PICK: Kansas State (-3) to win by more than 3 points Chris "The Bear" Fallica has covered sports for nearly three decades. While college football has been his focus, he also enjoys the NFL, Soccer, Golf, Tennis, MLB, NHL and Horse Racing, with an "occasional" wager on such events. Chris recently won the inaugural Circa Football Invitational and finished in the Top 10 of the Golden Nugget Football Contest. He's a multiple-time qualifier for the NHC Handicapping Championship.
