I played tourist for the day on a sunset dinner cruise in Toronto — here's my verdict

As a born-and-raised Torontonian, it can be easy to overlook some of the city's 'touristy' attractions. But I like to keep an open mind. Taking a look at your city through the fresh eyes of a visitor can be worth it, every once and a while. With that in mind, I recently set sail from the Toronto Harbour to experience a Premier Dinner Cruise run by City Cruises. The company hosts a range of dining, entertainment and sightseeing expeditions, and its Premier Dinner Cruise offers an evening of elevated dining and panoramic city views aboard the newly-renovated luxury vessel, Toronto Odyssey. Browse here. Here's everything you need to know about the experience. The Premier Dinner Cruise is a unique way to experience Toronto's scenic waterfront. Starting at $80 per person, the event includes a 2.5-hour cruise on Lake Ontario and a three-course plated dinner. A DJ provides entertainment for the evening, and the ship offers plenty of space for dancing after dinner. If dancing isn't your thing, you can also enjoy the open rooftop deck to take in sunset views of the city instead. What: Toronto Harbour Premier Dinner Cruise Price: $89 – $129 for adults, $69 – $89 for kids (varies by date) Where to book: City Cruises Toronto City Cruises hosts several weekly dinner cruise sailings, including lunch and brunch cruises if you prefer an earlier event. Below are the departure dates and times for the summer 2025 season: Boarding time : 6 p.m. (5 p.m. on Sundays) Cruise time: 7 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. (6 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. on Sundays) Sailings: August: Wednesday to Sunday | September: Thursday to Sunday | October: Friday to Sunday | November and December: Friday and Saturday The Toronto Odyssey departs from the south/east dock wall at 207 Queens Quay W. in Toronto's Harbourfront neighbourhood. It's located right beside Harbourfront Centre , a community campus for arts, culture, learning and recreation. Harbourfront Centre offers exhibitions, workshops and festivals throughout the summer — I recommend checking out their calendar of events to see what's on and make a full-day excursion of your city cruise. By foot/bike: I won't sugar-coat it, Toronto traffic is brutal this summer. Between road lane closures and transit upgrades, getting around by foot or by bike is one of the easiest ways to travel downtown if you can swing it. Get there early and grab a drink at nearby Amsterdam Brewhouse as you await your boarding time. By transit: Take the TTC or GO train to Union Station; from there the departure dock is about a 15-minute walk. Alternatively, you can take the 510 streetcar from Spadina Station and exit at the Queens Quay West at Harbourfront Centre stop. By car: Paid parking nearest to the cruise's dock can be found underground at the Harbourfront Center, located at 235 Queens Quay W. Expect to pay $30 for daytime or evening parking, or $42 for all-day parking. On the night I set sail, the cruise had a boarding time from 6 p.m. to 6:45 p.m., with a departure set for 7 p.m. Check your tickets to ensure that you arrive on time, as departures do vary depending on the day of the week. My husband and I arrived just before 6:30 and we were greeted by friendly City Cruises staff who welcomed us on board and walked us to our assigned table. The ship has three dining areas — top, middle, and lower decks — and our table was located in the middle of the ship, next to a window overlooking the water. Once we were situated, we headed to the upper deck to grab a drink and enjoy cocktail hour before the cruise set sail. The dinner portion of the cruise includes a three-course meal with your choice of appetizer, main and dessert. Guests were free to roam the ship during cocktail hour, but when it was time for dinner the captain made an announcement over the speaker so guests on the rooftop deck could get seated. Throughout the evening a DJ keeps up a steady stream of background music, and after dinner the ship comes alive as they spin a mix of pop, R&B and dance music. On the evening of my cruise, there was also a live saxophone player on the upper deck who added to the party atmosphere during the cocktail hour and post-dinner period. Dinner is served plated at your table while the boat disembarks from the dock, allowing for a fun view of the passing city. Once you arrive at your seat, servers arrive with bread and water for the table, then take your meal and drink orders in quick order. To start your meal, you can choose between garden salad, or Vichyssoise, a chilled potato and leek soup. My husband and I both chose the garden salad, which was fairly standard fare with a topping of julienned carrots, sliced carrots and tomatoes and a balsamic dressing. Dessert was served buffet-style, with an array of mini cakes, brownies, cookies and fresh fruit to choose from. As dessert was served, tea and coffee were also set out for guests to help themselves. Dinner was one of four dishes: honey sesame chicken, pan seared Atlantic salmon, braised beef short ribs or vegetable coconut curry, each of which is served with an assortment of sides. You can also upgrade your meal to one of the dinner enhancements like AAA beef or lobster tail for an additional cost. This was my favourite course of the evening, and both dishes I sampled were on par with upscale chain restaurants like The Keg or Earl's. I opted for the honey sesame chicken, which came with turmeric basmati rice and stir-fried vegetables topped with Fresno chillies, microgreens and a sesame glaze. The portion size was neither too large nor too small, and the ingredients tasted fresh and light — perfect for a hot summer night. My husband chose the short ribs, which were served with garlic mashed potatoes and roasted veggies, and topped with pan jus and microgreens. It was flavourful and extremely tender as the meat practically fell off the bone. It's a rich meal that might be a little heavy for some preferences, but was very tasty nonetheless. Tea, coffee and water are included with the dinner, but wine, beer and cocktails must be purchased from the bar at an additional cost. My only cocktail of the evening was a Blue Lagoon, which was fruity and not too strong. However, the bar was fully stocked with a vast wine list, beer, cider, spirits and more options to suit just about any palate. Having experienced my first City Cruises event, I'd definitely consider another cruise in the future. The music was lively, the dinner was flavourful, and seeing the Toronto skyline by boat was the highlight of the evening. With unobstructed views of Toronto Island and the downtown core, it's a great way to do some sightseeing. Be sure to pack a camera and come ready to snap a ton of photos. While my husband and I enjoyed a date night on board the cruise, I can also see it being a great way to celebrate a birthday with friends or a milestone anniversary with family. Given that a one-hour City Cruises sightseeing tour starts at $33 per person, the Premier Dinner Cruise is also reasonably priced for the time spent on the water and the included meal.

Sony raises the price of the Playstation 5 in the US

NEW YORK (AP) — Sony has raised the price of its PlayStation 5 consoles being sold in the United States by $50. 'Similar to many global businesses, we continue to navigate a challenging economic environment,' Sony Global Marketing Vice President Isabelle Tomatis wrote in a blog post. 'As a result, we've made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S. starting on August 21.' The price change affects the standard Playstation 5, the Digital Edition and the Pro. According to Sony, prices for games and accessories remain unchanged and that this round of increases only affects consoles sold in the U.S. Weekly A weekly look at what's happening in Winnipeg's arts and entertainment scene. When the Tokyo-based Sony reported earnings earlier in August, the company said it was working to diversify its supply chain to alleviate the impact of U.S. tariffs. Sony is the last of the big three console makers to raise prices this year. Microsoft bumped up prices for the Xbox consoles in March, and Nintendo has increased the prices for both its original Switch console and accessories for the Switch 2.

Deftones are an alternative metal band that sprang up in the fertile Sacramento, Calif., scene in the late 1980s. Dropping its first album, Adrenaline, in 1995 on Madonna's Maverick Records, the band, fronted by singer Chino Moreno, found a fan base for its mix of U.K. shoegaze and nü metal riffs, with a real focus on mood and melody. The sound grew more aggressive with 2000s White Pony, which won the Grammy Award for best metal performance. The group would continue releasing albums with varying degrees of success throughout the years, leading right up to 2025's Private Music. The band's 10th album lands at a time when Gen Z nostalgia sees renewed interest in the alt-metal sounds of past decades, and bands from Korn to Creed are back on the tour circuit.
