Trichy admin rescues 55 homeless people
Led by district collector V Saravanan, officials from various departments including the district child protection officer, the district social welfare officer, the district disabled persons welfare officer, and police personnel, participated in the drive. Several NGOs were also involved.
A press statement said 39 men and 16 women were rescued during the drive. They have been accommodated in old age homes, rehabilitation centres for the disabled or facilities for the sick. The district administration has appealed to the public to report homeless individuals in need of help by contacting 63691-03413, a WhatsApp helpline.

Surat: Dumas police busted a party at the 'Weekend Address' hotel, where liquor was allegedly being served, and arrested four men and two women, all between 23 and 25 years of age. A man had called the Surat police control room to report that his daughter-in-law was at a liquor party in Room 443 of the hotel. Dumas police then raided the room and caught the accused, in possession of a liquor bottle. Both the women arrested are artists, while the men are professionals and businessmen. All the accused were allegedly intoxicated. Police seized four glasses and a half-full liquor bottle. Investigators said the group had rented the room to celebrate Friendship Day. Police took all of them to Civil Hospital to get their blood tested for alcohol. "We learned that the informer's son is married to one of the women arrested. As the couple had certain disputes, the informer wanted to 'teach the woman a lesson'. He started following her and came to know about the said party. After he got to know about the party, he informed police," said an official. Dumas police also learned that the hotel room was rented out without compliance with the police commissioner's notification on rentals. "Of 464 rooms in the hotel, many are owned by private individuals who sign a rent agreement and sublet rooms. The person renting the room offers it to others for higher rates. As his contract is over, police will file a separate complaint against the room owner," said assistant commissioner of police Deep Vakil. — Police to question informer As the party was disrupted due to a family dispute, police are probing the incident with caution. Sources stated police are now investigating how the informer became aware of the party. "We will get a statement from the informer on how he learned about the woman being in that particular room. Was he following her or did he deploy someone to monitor her activities? This will aid the investigation," said an official.

Ahmedabad: A major controversy has erupted at TransStadia University in the Kankaria area of the city after a BCA student allegedly attempted suicide following repeated pressure from the university to pay tuition fees—despite holding a freeship card due to his reserved category status. The student reportedly consumed phenyl on July 24 and remains hospitalised in critical condition. His family has alleged that he was harassed over fee payments, claiming the university demanded an additional Rs 40,000 even after they had already paid Rs 10,000. Weekly penalties of Rs 500 were also allegedly imposed for non-payment, further worsening his distress, according to sources. The National Students' Union of India (NSUI) staged a protest on campus, demanding immediate police action against university officials and urging the administration to cover all of the student's medical expenses. Doctors have stated that the student's ability to speak again remains uncertain. 3 killed, 4 injured in separate mishaps over the weekend in Mumbai and Thane
Mumbai/Thane: Three persons were killed and four others suffered injuries in three separate incidents in Vikhroli and Thane over the weekend. In the first incident that took place in Vikhroli (E) on Saturday evening, an autorickshaw driver fatally knocked down a pedestrian and injured three others within a span of 30 minutes. Vikhroli police constable Jyoti Gite witnessed the first mishap at 6pm near Bindu Madhav Thackeray Chowk. She said the auto driver, Jalindar Dongre (66), rammed into Manoj Goud (28), who was walking along the road. As no ambulance was available, Gite and traffic warden More took Goud, who suffered severe head injuries, to Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Hospital in the same auto. Goud was declared dead before admission. Shockingly, en route to the hospital, Dongre hit three pedestrians — Radhamohan Panigrahi, Saibani Panigrahi, and Chandradevi Verma — in Tagore Nagar. They all sustained minor injuries.
