Arambai Tenggol flag hoisted on Manipur's Shirui peak, Nagas angry
GUWAHATI: The Arambai Tenggol, a Meitei radical group, has angered the Nagas by allegedly hoisting its flag on the Shirui peak in Manipur's Ukhrul district during the five-day Shirui Lily Festival that ends May 25.
The Tangkhul Naga community considers the 9,304 ft Shirui peak sacred as many rivers and streams originate from it. The endemic and seasonal Shirui lily (Lilium mackliniae), celebrated through an annual festival organised by Manipur Tourism, derives its name from this peak.
Midway through the Shirui Lily Festival, which was inaugurated by Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on May 21, a group of people claiming to be members of the Arambai Tenggol's Cobra Team – Unit 58 put up a 'seven-coloured Meitei flag' on the peak.
The Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS), an apex student body, condemned the hoisting of the flag and said it was a 'deliberate political provocation' and 'an insult' to the identity, culture, and territorial sanctity of Tangkhul Nagas.
'The Shirui Lily Festival is a solemn celebration of our rare endemic flower, our land, and the enduring spirit of the Tangkhul Naga people. To carry out this kind of symbolic aggression in sacred Tangkhul territory is a calculated attempt to disrupt peace and politicise a neutral cultural platform,' the TKS said in a statement.
The organisation said any repetition of such 'reckless and inflammatory' action will not go unchallenged. 'While the Tangkhul people have traditionally welcomed all visitors to the Shirui Lily Festival with open arms, their hospitality must not be mistaken for weakness,' it added.
The Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL), the apex social body of the Tangkhuls, also slammed the 'utterly disgraceful and despicable attempt by the Arambai Tenggol to tarnish and obfuscate the spirit and meaning of the Shirui Lily Festival for petty and dirty political gains at the wrong place and time'.
'Do you even care to know that the Shirui Lily Festival is a celebration dedicated to the truth of the inexplicable wonders of God's creations? The tiny flower, Shirui lily, blooming on a picturesque hilltop evokes an aura and excitement, requiring us to maintain humanity's dignity,' TNL president Sword Vashum said.
He said the Nagas and Meiteis, brought within the same geographical boundaries by the British rulers in 1891, do not have a common history or heritage. 'Therefore, we should settle for good neighbourliness,' he said.

Union Home secy, Manipur Guv discuss border fencing, law & order situation
Union Home secretary Govind Mohan called on Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and discussed with him border fencing, relief measures for internally displaced persons and the overall law and order situation in the state, an official statement said. The meeting between the Union Home secretary and the Manipur governor took place on Monday in which Intelligence Bureau Director Tapan Kumar Deka, Manipur chief secretary, Security Advisor to Manipur government and senior officials were present, it said. "The meetings focused on key issues concerning the state including relief and rehabilitation efforts for internally displaced persons (IDPs), border fencing and the overall law and order situation" it said. During the meeting, the ongoing relief measures for IDPs in both the hills and the valley were reviewed and a detailed assessment was made of the current facilities being provided to displaced persons, the status of rehabilitation efforts, and the long-term plan for their permanent resettlement, it said. The meeting also deliberated on the progress of the border fencing along the Indo-Myanmar Border, and the law and order situation in the state. Earlier on Monday, the Central team led by Union Home secretary and Intelligence Bureau Director interacted with internally displaced persons at two relief camps in Churachandpur and oversaw the conditions of the two camps. The team visited the relief centre at Dorcas Veng where the Union Home secretary inaugurated a creche facility for children and a women's tailoring programme. The team also visited a relief camp at Sadhbhavna Mandap at Tuibong where Govind Mohan inaugurated a creche-cum-children's library, to further strengthen child-focused support at the camp. At both the camps, the officials interacted with the IDPs, reviewed the available infrastructure, inspected relief materials and facilities, assessed the overall condition of the camps and listened to the concerns and suggestions of the caretakers of the IDPs and assured them of continued government support, the statement said. Fifteen students who passed the HSLC and Higher Secondary Examinations 2025 from the two camps including 5 from Dorcas Veng and 10 from Sadbhavna Mandap, Tuibong were felicitated and certificates of appreciation were given by the Union Home secretary. The team was accompanied by Manipur Chief Secretary PK Singh, Director General of Police Rajiv Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Churachandpur Dharun Kumar S and other officials.

More than 60,000 people have been displaced from their homes and villages who are staying in relief camps in different ethnic violence between the non-tribals Meiteis and tribal Kuki-Zo broke out in the northeastern state on May 3, 2023, after a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organised in the hill districts to protest the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
