Buena Park partners with South Korean company to promote taekwondo

Kukkiwon, a South Korean taekwondo company, is partnering with Buena Park for future events and economic growth as it expands its reach into the United States.
Branch leaders in seven U.S. states, including California, have recently been appointed by the company.
Jinseob Kim, secretary general of the Kukkiwon California branch, attended the Buena Park City Council meeting on Feb. 25 as council members considered a two-year agreement allowing the company to use its public facilities for five days at no cost.
'I hope that the city of Buena Park and Kukkiwon will grow together,' Kim told council members on Tuesday.
Buena Park is home to a sizable Asian American population, Orange County's second Koreatown and an outdoor mall that serves as a hub for local Korean Americans.
By establishing a presence in Buena Park, Kukkiwon pledged to promote and recommend the city's hotels for international and out-of-town guests at its events. City officials hoped that a boost in tourism would also help surrounding retail and restaurants.
But not all were pleased by the proposed partnership.
Yong Choi, a former Buena Park planning commissioner, warned of a taekwondo takeover by Kukkiwon while raising questions of fairness regarding the facilities agreement.
Choi, who teaches taekwondo and owns a martial arts business himself, claimed that Kukkiwon earns profits from issuing Dan certificates recognizing a person's rank in the martial art.
Kukkiwon does have an interest in expanding its Dan certification reach.
According to statements made by the organization in the press, only a quarter of California's 1,400 taekwondo schools issue Dan certificates.
Choi feared that the company's growing presence in Buena Park would force other local taekwondo small businesses to close.
'They have [the] power to control,' he said. 'I don't think that's right or an equal opportunity for the local business people.'
Choi stated that if there's a facilities-use agreement between the Buena Park and Kukkiwon, the same terms should be extended to other smaller businesses.
After an initial discussion at the Jan. 28 council meeting, Kukkiwon sought all-day use of the city's Community Center Ballroom for an inaugural event as well as a four-day use of its Veterans Hall for a weekend event starting in late May.
Any other events at city facilities would be at the usual rental rate.
Councilman Carlos Franco briefly raised the issue of granting a 'potentially unfair advantage' to a private company. He asked what the rental rates were for the city's Veterans Hall and Community Center Ballroom.
According to city documents, the Veterans Hall rents for $89 an hour, including staff. The Community Center Ballroom rents for $167 an hour, with staffing included.
'This is strictly a business agreement in terms of bringing more economic benefits to the city by accommodating all the international and possibly out-of-town visitors,' said Mayor Joyce Ahn, in support of the arrangement with Kukkiwon.
Kukkiwon is expected to draw up to 4,000 people to the area by hosting the World Taekwondo Hanmadang at the Anaheim Convention Center in July.
Ahn commented that no small business can match that.
Choi objected that Anaheim's resort hotels would be in a better position to benefit.
Councilwoman Lamiya Hoque recommended that there be a one-year evaluation of the agreement and its economic impact on Buena Park with the second-year of the contract being contingent on demonstrated success.
'I think it would be for council's benefit to see what would come from that within the year,' she said.
The proposed amendment to the agreement found favor with the rest of the council, which unanimously approved the partnership.
Ahn noted that Kukkiwon isn't a nonprofit and that bigger international events will be hosted outside of Buena Park.
'That said, the visitors will be encouraged to use the hotels in Buena Park,' she said. 'We're not expecting 3,000 or 4,000 hotel stays.'
The agreement also calls on Kukkiwon to strengthen collaboration and outreach with local taekwondo schools in the city.

BlueOval SK begins production one week out from pivotal union vote. Here's what that means

GLENDALE, Ky. ― BlueOval SK has begun production of electric vehicle batteries at its sprawling Hardin County plant, the company announced Aug. 19, a historic step for Kentucky's single largest economic development project on record. The first battery to be sold to BlueOval SK's customers came off the assembly line in Glendale Aug. 19, according to a Facebook post and email newsletter shared by the company. The batteries will be used to power Ford's F-150 Lightning pickup truck and current E-Transit, according to BlueOval SK's newsletter announcement. "We are proud to build batteries at our Kentucky 1 facility that will power next-generation electric vehicles," BlueOval SK CEO Michael Adams said in the newsletter. "The start of production is a significant milestone that strengthens our position in the electric vehicle battery market." Earlier in August, Ford delayed new generations for both models until 2028, extending a previously announced delay. A Ford spokesperson did not respond to The Courier Journal's request for comment. BlueOval SK is a joint venture between Ford and South Korean company SK On. Its $5.8 billion Kentucky site includes two plants, Kentucky 1 and Kentucky 2. Only Kentucky 1 is in production; production at Kentucky 2 was previously delayed indefinitely, due to less-than-anticipated demand for electric vehicles. "Today, Kentucky marks a historic milestone four years in the making," Gov. Andy Beshear said in a press release. "This remains the single largest investment in the history of our state, and it sparked a surge of new investment and job announcements that placed Kentucky at the center of EV-related innovation." Production is beginning just one week ahead of a major crossroads for workers. Plant staff will vote on whether or not to unionize with the United Auto Workers on Aug. 26 and 27. The workers' campaign to unionize has been driven in part by occupational safety and health concerns. Plant employees have filed a slew of complaints to state investigators, describing chemical exposure risks, inadequate personal protective equipment, respiratory hazards and more. Earlier this year, workers outright refused to work with a hazardous chemical in the plant, according to records reviewed by The Courier Journal. Recent Trump administration reversals in federal policy support for electric vehicles are also expected to pinch the market. Tax credits for EV purchases will expire at the end of September, a change that's expected to hurt consumer demand after a surge in EV adoption in recent years. Still, Ford and other automakers have indicated they plan to forge ahead on EV technology, seeing it as the inevitable direction of the industry as Chinese companies make gains. Ford recently announced a $5 billion investment in EVs, including retooling the Louisville Assembly Plant for production of a new electric midsize pickup. The batteries produced in Hardin County also stand to cut into transportation emissions, the largest contributor of U.S. greenhouse gases. If both Kentucky plants and BlueOval SK's additional plant in Tennessee produce batteries at the company's planned capacity, it would displace "over 455 million gallons of gasoline per year for the lifetime of the vehicles," according to the Department of Energy. "BlueOval SK is creating good-paying, American jobs in the heart of the Commonwealth," Adams said. "We are strengthening the domestic supply chain and driving the transition to zero-emissions transportation." Occupational safety investigations persist In previous interviews, workers have shared concerns that safety issues encountered in the past year could be amplified once the plant ramps up production. BlueOval SK has received at least one citation from state labor investigations so far, records show, related to improper fire extinguisher placement. Other incidents, including one in which a worker was sprayed with a hazardous chemical, did not result in citations. A new state investigation from July is still open, as officials look into several reports from workers this summer. One complainant described an electrocution from a faulty power adapter, causing the worker's arm to remain "in a stun state for most of the day." Another described improper lockout-tagout procedures, meant to keep potentially dangerous equipment disconnected while not in use: "...People are inside of those areas cleaning or working while the line is running and operating," according to the complaint. These recent complaints follow a series of other worker concerns raised in the last year, largely related to chemical exposure risks and access to adequate personal protective equipment, or PPE. More: EXCLUSIVE: Workers at Ford, SK On battery plant in Kentucky file for union election BlueOval SK has consistently rejected claims of safety issues, and said the plant follows all regulations. Workers have cited safety issues as a key reason for unionization efforts. Previously, the UAW has successfully unionized other EV battery plants, including projects that were associated with other Michigan-based automakers General Motors and Stellantis. Ford factories are unionized with the UAW across the U.S. and have been for decades. A UAW victory at BlueOval SK in Kentucky would give the union a greater stake in the South's growing "battery belt," where right-to-work laws leave joining a union to individual choice. BlueOval SK under pressure to hire The BlueOval SK Battery Park's 2025 start to production is consistent with the company's previously shared plans for the site, but the future of Kentucky 2, the other half of the site, is still uncertain. BlueOval SK may be under heightened pressure to ramp up operations in Kentucky 2 in the coming years, as the company strives to hit hiring goals established by the terms of its forgivable loan from the state. As part of the state incentive package BlueOval SK Battery Park received, the company must meet specific job and wage requirements. The first job and wage measurements will be taken in December 2026, according to a company presentation to lawmakers in June. By 2027, BlueOval SK Battery Park will need to employ 2,500 workers in Kentucky. The company said it expected to have roughly 1,400 workers at the Kentucky plant by May, according to filings with the National Labor Relations Board, and predicted employment of 1,800 by October and 2,500 at a later date. The NLRB, in its decision on workers' petition to unionize, called these hiring plans "speculative." "The record does not contain any evidence to establish when it expects to be fully staffed, or where the additional employees will be employed," whether in the Kentucky 1 plant or neighboring Kentucky 2, the NLRB found. Fila Parent Company Misto Holdings Reports Q2 Revenue Gains Despite Economic Uncertainty

Fila parent company Misto Holdings delivered growth in the second quarter despite economic slowdown and weakened consumer sentiment. According to the South Korean company, consolidated revenue in Q2 2025 increased 4.5 percent to 1.23 trillion won from the same time last year. Operating profit in the second quarter was 181.9 billion won, up 29.8 percent year-on-year. More from WWD Keen and Metalwood Studio Team Up on Golf Shoe Collection for Pre and Post Rounds Dillard's Posts Higher Sales, Lower Net Income in Second Quarter Skechers Beat Expectations in Q2 as Shoe Firm Continues on Path to Go Private By segment, the company noted that its Misto division, which includes the Fila brand, recorded revenue of 216.3 billion won in Q2. The company said that in the quarter, Fila continued to work on its brand repositioning strategy, as well as launch new key products such as 'Peito' and 'Panthera' following the success of the 'Echappe' franchise and opened the Fila 1911 Myeong-dong concept store in April. In Greater China, the company's Marithé+François Girbaud label opened its first store in Shanghai's landmark Xintiandi district, marking a significant step in K-fashion expansion. Leveraging Misto Holdings' operational network, the company said it plans to extend brand awareness across the Greater China region while pursuing mid- to long-term brand refinement and strategic investments. As for the company's Acushnet segment, the company's U.S. golf subsidiary, revenue grew 7.9 percent to 1.01 trillion won in Q2 over the same time last year. Misto noted that this growth was fueled by solid demand across the golf ball, club, and gear categories—particularly the new Pro V1 & Pro V1x golf balls, GT Series clubs, and Scotty Cameron putters. Despite ongoing external uncertainties such as shifts in U.S. tariff policies, the company said that its Acushnet segment outperformed expectations. Balanced performance in the U.S. and European markets, along with adjustments in certain Asian regions, contributed to the segment's stable global growth, the company added. Ho Yeon (Aaron) Lee, chief financial officer of Misto Holdings, said in a statement on Monday that despite uncertainties in the external policy environment and adjustments in certain operating regions, strong brand competitiveness centered on Acushnet and the positive effects of restructuring certain overseas operations contributed positively to the company's overall performance improvement. 'The Misto segment is also focusing on enhancing product competitiveness and improving distribution efficiency under its mid- to long-term strategy, while continuing to invest in and support balanced growth across our brand portfolio,' Lee added. This news comes as Misto Holdings has undergone some changes this year. In April, shareholders agreed to rename the company from Fila Holdings Corp. to Misto Holdings as part of a larger refocus on the business. The company said at the time that the change aimed to 'further solidify its position as a global brand portfolio company' citing that its previous name was closely associated with the Fila brand, which led to a 'limited perception' of its broader portfolio and global brand management role. Originating from the sportswear brand Fila, founded in Italy in 1911, Misto Holdings acquired Fila's global business in 2007 and became a publicly traded entity on the Korean stock market in 2010. In 2011, the company expanded further with the acquisition of Acushnet Holdings Corp., home to premium golf brands such as Titleist, FootJoy, Scotty Cameron, Kjus and Vokey.
