Russia cannot lose war in Ukraine, warns China

Telegraph6 hours ago
Russia cannot afford to lose the war in Ukraine, China has warned.
Wang Yi, China's foreign minister, said Beijing does not want to see a Russian loss because of fears the United States would then shift its focus on to China.
The comments were made during a four-hour meeting between Mr Wang and Kaja Kallas, the vice-president of the European Commission, according to several sources who spoke to the South China Morning Post.
The remarks took many by surprise as Chinese officials do not often speak this candidly, even in closed-door meetings.
According to those familiar with the conversation, Mr Wang also gave Ms Kallas several 'history lessons and lectures' about realpolitik and concerns in Beijing that Washington will gradually turn its attention east.
There are signs that this change is already underway as Donald Trump and Pete Hegseth, the US secretary of defence, have both made clear that security in the Indo-Pacific region and mitigating a threat from China is a top priority for the administration.
China has repeatedly said that it is 'not a party' to Russia's war against Ukraine and has denied supplying weapons to Moscow, despite evidence to the contrary, including reports that it supplied Russia with a laser defence system.
Mr Wang's comments are the latest sign that China has a vested interest in the outcome of the war.
Following the exchange, Chinese state media reported that China has 'consistently advocated for peace talks to solve the Ukraine crisis' and welcomed the 'efforts of all parties to reach a comprehensive, lasting and binding peace agreement'.
The remarks came after the US halted weapons shipments to Ukraine because of concerns that America's stockpile is too low.
In a blow to Kyiv, the White House said it will ' put America's interests first following a review of the nation's military support and assistance to other countries across the globe'.
While those familiar with Mr Wang's meeting with Ms Kallas said it was respectful, soon after it was reported that the upcoming two-day EU summit in China had been shortened, at Beijing's request.
The original agenda had Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, and Antonio Costa, the president of the European Council, meeting with Chinese president Xi Jinping and premier Li Qiang in Beijing on July 24, then travelling to Hefei, in central China, for a business summit on July 25.
Now, the summit will only be one day in Beijing.
Experts suspect the reason the summit was cut short could be because of Chinese concerns that the EU will sign a trade deal with the US that would hurt Beijing.
China has also recently clashed with the EU over export controls of rare earth elements and magnets, which have hit some European manufacturers hard.
Mr Wang tried to offer reassurances about export controls yesterday, saying that 'certain forces are deliberately hyping this matter' and that rare earth exports have never been and should not become an issue between China and Europe.
The summit's shortening seemed to be a snap decision as the EU Chamber of Commerce in China was inviting members to sign up for meetings in Hefei as late as Thursday morning local time.

Trump could be running the most incompetent peace process in history

If the consequences were not so brutal, it might almost be possible to admire the brazen audacity of Vladimir Putin. Having just put down the phone on Donald Trump, he launched the biggest air assault on Kyiv since the war began, pounding Ukraine's capital with 550 killer drones and ballistic missiles. Putin committed this outrage because he has every confidence that Mr Trump will fail to exact any price. True, the American president might compose an angry social media post, but Putin is clearly convinced that nothing more will happen. Tragically, Mr Trump has given him every reason to believe as much. On Tuesday, America stopped supplying Ukraine with Patriot-3 interceptors, designed to shoot down incoming Russian missiles. Some of these vital defence systems had already been flown across the Atlantic to Poland for onward passage to Ukraine. It seems they will just be sent back again. With this extraordinary decision, Mr Trump effectively informed Putin that America is content to leave Kyiv defenceless against Russian air attack. Putin responded entirely logically and ordered his biggest assault yet. By withholding the Patriots, Mr Trump gave Putin the greenest light imaginable. The Kremlin will also have noticed that Mr Trump has not imposed any new US sanctions on Russia since his return to the White House. All sanctions regimes are vulnerable to circumvention: the only response is to update and extend the restrictions, blocking loopholes as they appear, just as Britain and the EU frequently do. By not passing any new sanctions, Mr Trump is allowing the existing ones to wither on the vine and sending another signal for Putin to do his worst. The great irony is that a Sanctions Bill that really would crush the Russian economy is ready to go in the Senate, with overwhelming bipartisan support. This measure, proposed by Senators Lindsey Graham and Richard Blumenthal, a Republican and Democrat respectively, would impose US tariffs of 500 per cent on any country foolish enough to buy Putin's oil or gas. It can pass whenever the president gives the word. But there is no sign that Mr Trump will give the word. He occasionally threatens and blusters. On May 28, the president claimed that he would know 'within two weeks' whether Putin was 'tapping us along'. Five weeks have passed and all that Mr Trump has done is deprive Ukraine of vital defences. Putin has obviously concluded that the Sanctions Bill will never pass no matter what he does. Now there are only two possibilities. Mr Trump could be running the most cack-handed and incompetent peace process in history, based on asking Putin to lay off or else America will stop helping his enemy. What kind of a negotiating position is that? Or else Mr Trump thinks that the only route to peace is for Russia to achieve the total defeat and conquest of Ukraine as rapidly as possible.

China imposes anti-dumping duties on European brandy as trade tensions rise

China on Friday imposed anti-dumping duties on European brandy, most notably cognac produced in France, as trade tensions between Beijing and United States allies continue to rise. The tariffs, effective on Saturday, will range from 27.7% to 34.9%, China's Commerce Ministry said. They are to be in place for five years and will not be applied retroactively. Chinese authorities agreed to exempt some major cognac makers on condition they maintain their prices above minimum levels. The announcement came during a European visit by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi aimed at ironing out trade differences. Wang was set to visit Paris after stops in Brussels and Berlin. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said he will discuss the issue with Wang when the pair meet later Friday. The anti-dumping duties are the result of a probe China launched last year into European brandy, after the European Union undertook a probe into Chinese electric vehicles subsidies. 'The investigative authority finally ruled that the dumping of related imported brandy from the EU has existed,' read a statement by China's Commerce Ministry. 'The domestic brandy industry faces a material threat of damage, and there is a causal relationship between the dumping and the substantial damage threat.' Besides cognac, China has also launched investigations into European pork and dairy products. The brandy probe was the first and targeted mainly French makers of cognac and similar spirits such as Armagnac. China initially announced provisional tariffs of 30.6% to 39% on French cognac producer Remy Martin and other European brandies after a majority of E.U. countries approved duties on electric vehicles made in China. Exemptions include French producers Pernod Ricard, Remy Cointreau and Hennessy. In a written statement, Barrot praised the 'broad scope of exemptions' as 'a positive step for many players in the cognac and armagnac industry." He noted that 'several important points remain unresolved, in particular the exclusion of certain players from the scope of exemptions." "We remain fully committed to finding a definitive solution, based on the conditions that existed prior to the investigation," Barrot added. Wang's European tour comes ahead of a China-EU summit to be focused on trade later this month in Beijing.

The new Corbyn-Sultana party may be the most sinister Britain has seen in decades

Not since Pulp and the Pyramid Stage were united in perfect harmony in 1995 has the Glasto crowd been this excited about a new partnership. They once chanted: 'Oh, Jeremy Corbyn' to the beat of the White Stripes' Seven Nation Army. They have since declared 'death, death' to an actual army, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Now, as if by some Eavis-inspired magic, these two worlds have collided to produce Jeremy Corbyn: The Sequel, guest-starring Zarah Sultana. Although the Marxist mash-up is yet to be officially confirmed, we understand the former Labour MPs are unified by a desire to harness Left-wing and Muslim anger to defeat centrists such as Wes Streeting at the next election. Heady stuff. In a social media post, Sultana said the Government is 'an active participant in genocide' in Gaza and highlighted growing poverty, Labour's position on welfare, and the cost of living as reasons for establishing her new party. 'Labour has completely failed to improve people's lives. And across the political establishment, from Farage to Starmer, they smear people of conscience trying to stop a genocide in Gaza as terrorists. But the truth is clear: this Government is an active participant in genocide. And the British people oppose it.' In fact, a majority of Britons (55 per cent) do not view Israel's actions as genocidal, according to the latest YouGov poll, but pro-Palestinian fanatics have never been very good with facts. Corbyn, never a man in much of a hurry, has not yet broken his silence to say whether or not he supports the new party Sultana claims to have set up with him. As soon as he does, we can surely expect a slow pilgrimage of so-called 'progressives' to Islington North, where all new members will be given rainbow 'Queers for Palestine' badges and keffiyeh scarves. Disappointingly, old Compo's lefty pals John McDonnell and Diane Abbott have refused to sign up. Clive Lewis, the Labour MP for Norwich, who once had to apologise for using the phrase: 'Get on your knees, bitch' has also sadly ruled himself out as a future minister for women and equalities. Shame. Sultana famously once said she would 'celebrate' the deaths of Tony Blair and Benjamin Netanyahu – yet claims to espouse a 'socialism without barbarism'. I'm not so sure. I'm not certain someone like Sultana – the MP for Coventry South who lost the Labour whip soon after being re-elected in 2024 – should be considered an expert on barbarism. She once wrote of her support for 'violent resistance' by Palestinians. Sultana has been accused of using racist slurs while a student at Birmingham University, when she described a Jewish student as a 'YT' (whitey) in a Facebook post. In 2015, the 31-year-old, who sat on the national executives of both Young Labour and the National Union of Students, posted on Twitter: 'Yay, the white woman didn't win the Ethnic Minorities Officer Election!' Yay, indeed! She has previously criticised the police and the monarchy. In 2014, she posted: 'Can we get rid of the monarchy while we're fighting the establishment and its institutions? Viva la revolucion!' In 2015, she tweeted: 'Solidarity with those protesting in London right now. Keep safe from the thugs that are the police.' Although she later apologised for her comments about the police, she denies any suggestion she is an anti-Semite, insisting: 'As an anti-racist campaigner and a Muslim, I'm committed to fighting racism in all its forms and I know that these forms are interconnected and must be fought collectively.' Which brings us nicely on to Corbyn, who similarly claims to be a lifelong 'anti-racism campaigner', despite presiding over the Labour Party when a number of Jewish MPs and members were forced out. In 2016, the 76-year-old said he regretted once describing Hamas and Hezbollah as 'friends'. The admission came two years after he attended a wreath-laying in Tunisia for Palestinian leaders linked to the Black September group which carried out a terror attack on the 1972 Munich Olympics, killing 11 people Israelis. Corbyn insisted he was primarily there to pay his respects to the victims of a 1985 Israeli airstrike on Palestinian Liberation Organisation offices in Tunis. Despite being pictured holding a wreath, he said: 'I was present at that wreath-laying, I don't think I was actually involved in it.' Right, Jezza. The important thing to note here is that this isn't Change UK, dreadful though Anna Soubry is. This has the potential to be a political force more frightening than anything Britain has ever known. Despite Sultana's insistence that she is standing up for an 'island that's suffering' – she is not actually interested in the needs of British citizens; her primary aim is to 'free Palestine'. The clue is in the line that she wants 'money spent on public services, not forever wars'. Similarly, her suggestion that 'we need homes and lives we can actually afford, not rip-off bills we pay every month to a tiny elite bathing in cash,' suggests that she is , in fact, more than content with waging a 'forever war' when it comes to class. Or against those she disagrees with, who in her mind are either Tory scum, Zionist scum, racist scum or, of course, genocidal maniacs. Contrary to preaching 'gentler, kinder' politics, Corbyn and Sultana are the high priest and princess of the kind of nasty, vindictive, and divisive hard-Left ideology that saw the Jewish former Labour MP Luciana Berger require police protection to attend the Labour Party conference in 2018. Given half the chance, they would impoverish us in their communist quest for a more 'equal' society and would revel in our immiseration, believing that we must pay for the sins of empire. Sultana describes Farage as a 'grifter'. Yet in her and Corbyn we have the ultimate pair of political fraudsters, purporting to represent the many when, in fact, they are simply a mouthpiece for a vocal minority of deranged zealots.
