Stephen Robinson pushing the St Mirren boat forward as he reveals reasons behind new Buddies deal
Delighted Stephen Robinson and his assistant Brian Kerr have penned new three-year contracts at St Mirren.
The 50-year-old, who replaced Jim Goodwin in February 2022, has led Saints to three successive top six finishes. Meanwhile, Kerr stepped up to the assistant manager role in September last year, replacing Diarmuid O'Carroll after he departed for Newcastle United.
The Buddies face league leaders Hearts in the Premier Sports Cup this weekend before taking on Rangers the following week, after the Ibrox club withdrew their request to have the game rescheduled. On his new deal, Robinson said: "I'm delighted to sign the new contract.
"I'm glad the board have appreciated the hard work that Brian and I have done over the last three years with three top six finishes.
"It's been an incredible achievement for the whole group of staff at the football club – both on and off the pitch.
I feel like we're right at the start of another process. "There's a lot of hard work to be done, but we're all aiming to push it in the right direction. I always use the phrase 'anything that makes the boat go forward' and I'm surrounded by people that are doing that to the best of their ability. "Jim Gillespie, Keith Lasley, everyone the board and every single person at the football club are striving to make it better. "We all want to make it happen quicker, but we don't have a never-ending amount of money, so we have to do it with hard work and diligence. Everyone is pushing the football club in the right place. "We felt it was right to commit our future with another year to continue the project that we're doing, aim for another top six finish and keep pushing the football club on and off the pitch." Club chairman, John Needham added: We're thrilled that Stephen has extended his contract and committed his future at St Mirren for another year. "The progress we have made as a club over the past few years has been clear to see and Stephen and his coaching team have played a large part in that. "We want to keep building on the successes of the last three seasons and agreeing this new contract evidences our ambition as a club to continue that progression."

'I think the type of game it was in extra time, I'd love to have been bringing Kyziridis and Kabore on. Maybe we got the game the wrong way round a wee bit, and that's on me. 'Maybe we had just one too many of the new lads starting the game. That was a typical cup tie, away from home against a St Mirren team who were top six last season. 'Sometimes you've got to give players a run, but maybe we just fell short on that side and that's probably on me. 'But that's not the reason we lost the tie because we got ourselves in a good position. I just wanted us to hammer home that authority (after equalising) and a Hearts team should be able to do that going forward.' St Mirren boss Stephen Robinson was delighted with the fight his team showed to reach the last eight. 'In the first half we were outstanding,' he said. 'We played some fantastic football, we pressed the life out of them. And then second half, we didn't do the simple things well enough and Hearts dominated the ball. 'And the subs that Hearts are bringing on, with a lot of money invested in the squad, you're obviously going to have to defend and we've done that with some super performances. 'Penalties becomes a little bit of a lottery but we've got an excellent goalkeeper so we had real faith that he would save at least one.'

Motherwell required extra-time to claim a 1-0 win at St Johnstone thanks to a goal in the 109th minute from Lukas Fadinger while Aberdeen were comfortable 3-0 winners away to Championship side Greenock Morton with Sivert Heltne Nilson, Kusini Yengi and Leighton Clarkson on target.
