Council reminded of role on environment issues

Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Environment Protection Council (MPASS) was reminded about its important role in advising the Sabah Government on matters pertaining to the implementation of the Environment Protection Enactment 2002 as well as on matters related to environmental management in the State. MPASS Chairman Datuk Seri Christina Liew gave the reminder in her opening speech when the Council convened its first meeting for the current year on Tuesday at the Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry's Conference Room. Liew, who is also State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister, presided at the meeting, attended by members of the Council, comprising senior officers from both State and Federal Government agencies. 'The Council must take a serious view of environmental issues in line with our commitment to ensuring sustainable environmental governance in line with the Sabah State Environmental Policy 2017. This Policy outlines 83 strategies based on five key areas, namely land, air, water, biodiversity and social dimension,' she said. The Minister expressed appreciation for the views and inputs contributed by the Council members, emphasising the importance of continuous cooperation in ensuring Sabah's environment remains clean, healthy and safe. Liew raised concerns over environmental impacts from hillside clearing activities and the improper management of solid waste, among other relevant issues. 'These issues require close collaboration among regulatory agencies,' she asserted.
Advertisement In this respect, the Council meeting agreed that follow-up discussions between technical departments/agencies should be held to discuss this matter further. Two discussion papers were presented by the Environment Protection Department (EPD) - the Study on Environmental Education Materials and Policy Implementation, and the Study on Water Quality Management Plan for the Sungai Inanam Catchment, Kota Kinabalu. Outputs of the studies, namely the environmental awareness modules, best practices of environmental education document and board games, will be distributed by EPD to stakeholders as reference and guidance. Additionally, it was decided that the recommendations from the water quality studies in Sungai Inanam will be adopted by relevant departments to prevent pollution and manage the water quality in that particular river. TAWAU: Indonesian children studying at Community Learning Centres (CLCs) under plantation companies in Malaysia are urged to use their gadgets to seek knowledge and information about Indonesia. Chief Representative of the Consulate of the Republic of Indonesia (KRI) in Tawau, Aris Heru Utomo, said they need to learn more about their country in order to deepen their pride in being Indonesian. 'Use your mobile phones not just to search for entertainment but seek knowledge and information about Indonesia as much as possible,' he said. He noted that Indonesia is a vast country made up of over 17,000 islands, rich in natural resources and home to various ethnicities and religions. 'With a strong love for their homeland, they will understand their nation, including its geography, natural beauty and unity in diversity,' he said. He also encouraged Indonesian children in Sabah to appreciate the song 'Tanah Airku' composed by Saridjah Niung Bintang Soedibjo, better known as Ibu Sud, as it reflects national values and love for the homeland. 'To love means to be proud, to uphold the good name and to defend Indonesia through attitudes and actions… And since you are students, your actions should be to study, study and study,' he said during a visit to the Mostyn Estate CLC in Kunak, as part of the 'Consulate Goes to Community Learning Centre (CLC)' programme, which included a flag presentation ceremony by 57 of its students. He said the flag ceremony is important to nurture the spirit of Indonesian nationalism, while recognising the four national symbols: the red and white flag, the national language, the Garuda Pancasila emblem and the national anthem Indonesia Raya. He emphasised that it is the duty of all Indonesians, including students born and raised in Sabah, to honour and uphold these four symbols, which were forged by the nation's heroes. Monitor lizard shows up for breakfast

Kota Kinabalu: Breakfast diners at a coffee got more than their usual morning meal when an adult monitor lizard made an uninvited appearance inside the premises, startling customers and staff alike. The unusual incident happened at a coffee shop in Segama, where patrons had come in for their morning breakfast when the large reptile wandered into the establishment. Eyewitnesses described moments of surprise and confusion as the monitor lizard explored the indoor space, creating an unexpected wildlife encounter in an urban setting. Quick-thinking customers and staff members worked together to safely guide the animal back outside. Using gentle shooing methods, they successfully encouraged the monitor lizard to leave the premises without resorting to harmful measures. Fortunately, the incident ended without any injuries to either humans or the reptile. The monitor lizard appeared unharmed and made its way back to its natural habitat after the brief indoor excursion. Advertisement The encounter was captured on video by witnesses and footage of the incident began circulating on social media on Wednesday. Monitor lizards are common in Sabah and occasionally venture into populated areas in search of food or shelter.
