Goodwood prison staff suspended after inmate's death

Four prison officials at the Goodwood Correctional Centre were suspended after an inmate died. Quinton Fortuin died following an altercation with prison staff on 16 February 2025.
Investigations by the Department of Correctional Services revealed that officers allegedly used force during the altercation that left Fortuin with fatal injuries. The investigation was conducted after Fortuin died at Karl Bremer Hospital from multiple blunt force injuries.
It is alleged that Fortuin stabbed correctional officer Lwandile Manise during a routine unlock procedure. Officials intervened and restrained Fortuin, who later died in the hospital. Fortuin faced multiple charges, including triple murder, at the time.
Officials suspended include Mr Lamla Shumane and Mr Xolani Matshoba, whom the department had initially reassigned but has now suspended again. They join Mr Qhama Kweleta and Ms Thembisa Mninzi, who have remained on suspension since shortly after the incident.
The department is also reviewing the conduct of other staff involved and may take additional disciplinary steps. Meanwhile, injured officials Mr Lwandile Manise and Mr Gareth Skippers are recovering at home.
The department said in a media statement that the investigation revealed serious lapses and that they will take further disciplinary action where necessary.
What does this brazen attack say about rising violence and safety?

Musk deletes X posts accusing Trump of Epstein ties

Billionaire Elon Musk deleted several X posts linking former US President Donald Trump to Jeffrey Epstein, just days after criticising him over a congressional bill. On Thursday 5 June, Musk posted without providing evidence that the US Department of Justice had not released Epstein's files because they allegedly implicated Trump. 'Time to drop the really big bomb: @realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files,' Musk wrote. 'That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT!' Musk deleted that post, along with others repeating the claim. The link now shows the message: 'Nothing to see here.' In another now-deleted post from Friday night, Musk said he would apologise to Trump 'as soon as there is a full dump of the Epstein files.' He also deleted a repost in which an X user called for Trump's impeachment and suggested replacing him with Vice President JD Vance. Musk had responded 'Yes' to the suggestion, appearing to endorse it. It remains unclear when the deleted posts were removed. As of today Musk has not retracted the accusations publicly, nor provided evidence to support them. Agent defends former Sundowns star Mbule

Former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Sipho Mbule is living through the darkest days of his career. His agent, Mike Makaab, is showing up for him. As confirmed before the start of last season, Sundowns sent the 27-year-old Mbule on loan to Sekhukhune United. After 18 appearances, including two goals and three assists, the club released Mbule for alleged misconduct. During the 2022/2023 season, the Bethlehem-born star was punished by Sundowns for reporting to training under the influence of alcohol. When somebody has a 'tag', they seem to be the target of most of the negativity that prevails in the industry. It's crazy,' Mbule's agent, Makaab, told Soccer Laduma after his agent's exit from Sundowns. 'What I am saying to you is that if it were one player with a so-called clean reputation and another player with a sketchy reputation, and they did the same thing, you wouldn't hear about the player with the clean reputation. 'I say this honestly because I have been in the industry for 28 years and I've seen it with my own eyes,' Makaab added. 'I can tell you that yes, Sipho may not be perfect. But I can also tell you that what has been reported is far from the truth. I'd rather not divulge any further because I would then be implicating people, and I don't want to implicate people. What you've read about his so-called misbehaviour leaves much to be desired. And I'm not protecting him,' Makaab added.
