IT employees flag rising two-wheeler accidents caused by pathetic road conditions at Bhumkar Chowk
2
Pune: A large number of IT employees working in Hinjewadi have complained about repeated accidents involving two-wheeler riders at Bhumkar Chowk in Wakad due to poor road conditions.
According to the Forum for IT Employees (FITE) Maharashtra, the junction, which connects Pimpri Chinchwad with Hinjewadi IT Park, experiences heavy daily traffic and a high number of mishaps in recent times.
While driving his two-wheeler to office last week on this route, IT employee Rhitom T said he struggled to control the bike. "Thankfully, I was driving at less than 20 kmph, so I did not fall. But the condition of the road is so pathetic that I could barely retain my balance.
Since then, I have decided not to take my bike to work till the road is repaired," he said.

Unni Balachandran, another IT employee, said the poor road condition also contributes to regular traffic jams. "I travel in a car. But I know the chowk is a nightmare for two-wheeler riders. Already, the roads are too narrow for the traffic they carry. Now, even the surface is destroyed. Authorities must act," he said.
Pavanjit Mane, president of FITE, told TOI, "I have received multiple complaints from IT employees about the condition of the road.

When I went to check it myself two days ago, a two-wheeler shockingly skidded right in front of us. The rider and his mother both fell and suffered injuries, after which they were taken to a nearby hospital for first aid. The road surface has eroded and is uneven, with loose gravel and potholes everywhere.
Add rain to this mixture and the result is disastrous."
Mane added, "FITE is urging all employees to be extremely cautious while using the stretch.
We also request authorities to immediately inspect the condition of roads at Bhumkar Chowk and take urgent steps to make them safe for daily commuters. This is not just an inconvenience. It's turning into a serious safety hazard."
When contacted by TOI, Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) city engineer Makarand Nikam said he was busy with a training session and could not comment. PCMC joint city engineer Bapu Gaikwad did not respond to calls or messages till the time of going to print.

Deadline for high security registration plate fitments may be extended again
Pune: The deadline for installing High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) in vehicles registered before April 2019 might be extended again, senior state transport officials told TOI on Wednesday, while denying penalty on vehicle owners who haven't installed HSRP yet. The Aug 15 deadline for installing HSRPs, previously declared as final, was preceded by a June 30 deadline. Additional transport commissioner Bharat Kalaskar said, "The deadline for HSRP installation is likely to be extended again. The decision on imposing penalties for non-compliance is still pending." State transport commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar said, "We haven't received any official communication from state govt regarding penalty imposition or deadline extension for HSRP installation. We'll inform the public if we receive any updates." TOI tried to contact state transport minister Pratap Sarnaik on the issue, but his phone was switched off. "Vehicle owners who have booked HSRP installation appointments but are waiting for their slot should carry the appointment receipt to access the RTO services," Pune deputy RTO Swapnil Bhosle had told TOI earlier. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Flexible Phone Plans for Small Biz Undo As of Aug 12, Pune RTO reported 5,44,100 HSRP installations and 7,04,505 appointments. "Of 25,28,589 eligible vehicles, only about 21% have installed HSRPs," an RTO official said. Pimpri Chinchwad RTO Sandesh Chavan said 2,78,439 vehicles were fitted with HSRPs, and 4,37,434 orders were received. He, however, didn't disclose the total number of vehicles in their jurisdiction requiring HSRPs. RESIDENTSPEAK I opted for home fitment and the person assigned didn't show up. Separate parking area for VIP, police cars at airport
1 2 Kolkata: Bidhannagar police has introduced a designated free parking area for VIP and police vehicles near the old domestic terminal to prevent unauthorised parking in front of the main airport terminal. For several years, vehicles with beacons or govt identification plates were parked outside the terminal for extended periods while waiting for passengers, despite rules allowing only seven minutes of free parking in the area. The penalty for overstaying is Rs 500, but these vehicles are rarely fined. The problem increased after lane dividers with reflective strips were installed along the terminal frontage, from exit gates 1A/B to 2A/B, to direct vehicles into lanes for pick-up, drop-off, and through movement since the start of the week. TOI highlighted over the past two days how these VIP vehicles occupy the first lane, leading to traffic congestion. We are in talks with the airport authorities to install a Flight Information Display System (FIDS), which shows arrivals, departures, gates, delays, and other real-time flight details, next to the VIP parking lot so that the drivers know the exact time of the flight arrivals," said a senior officer of Bidhannagar City Police. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Interested in Investing? Cyprus Offers Many Options Cyprus Invest | Search ads Undo Cops said they were urging the drivers of these VIP cars to move towards the terminal building only after the flight arrived and the passengers collected the luggage so as not to crowd outside the terminal. "Our officers will guide these vehicles to the terminal and ensure they no longer clog the channels," said the officer. Parking space for special cases has also been arranged at the third tier of the underground parking lot. The airport authorities and cops had tried a similar measure two years back but even then it hadn't paid off. Before the metro construction, a separate VIP parking lane existed under the elevated road to the departure terminal. This was removed to accommodate the project. On Wednesday, TOI found VIP vehicles were still parked near the terminal gates. These included state govt cars with beacons, police vehicles, and those belonging to politicians and magistrates. Some police and airport staff also parked motorcycles in the departure area. Under airport rules, vehicles can stay on the premises free for a maximum of seven minutes, with only three minutes allowed directly in front of the terminal gates. Longer stays require the use of the official parking zones. A senior airport official said the matter was discussed in coordination meetings, but the practice continues. Transport department admits lack of clarity on old number plates
Pune: The state transport department on Wednesday admitted to not adequately publicising what to do with old registration plates, causing confusion among vehicle owners, as the HSRP deadline for pre-April 2019 vehicles approached. "After installing HSRP, vehicle owners need to retain the old number plate, but this requirement wasn't properly publicised. The department will now take steps to clarify this," state transport commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar told TOI. Fatimanagar resident Nitin Chane had an HSRP fitted to his two-wheeler at a Salunke Vihar Road centre. "I could see many old number plates kept in a heap. After HSRP fitment, I asked for the old number plate back, but officials refused, saying they'd retain and destroy it. However, when I insisted, they relented, and I took the plate back as I feared potential misuse," Chane said. "We are working as per instructions received. The old numbers can't be accessed by anyone. Once the service centre closes in the evening, the main gate is locked up. We have a guard dog too," the representative said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Simple Morning Habit for a Flatter Belly After 50!
