Integrated Ops, Stricter Border Control Boost Contraband Seizure In Kelantan

Barnama13 hours ago
KOTA BHARU, July 17 (Bernama)-- The value of contraband seized in Kelantan surged by almost 78 per cent in the first six months of this year compared to the same period last year, driven by enhanced integrated operations and stricter border controls.
Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said RM171.5 million worth of contraband was seized between January and June this year, compared to only RM37.2 million during the corresponding period last year.
He described the achievement as a source of pride and a clear indication of the effectiveness of the integrated operations strategy, particularly following the border closure implemented in December 2024.
"This success also reflects the positive impact of strategic collaboration between various state and federal enforcement agencies.
'The strong synergy established has been effectively leveraged, resulting in tangible improvements in security control across the state," he said at the monthly assembly of the Kelantan Police Contingent here today.
Mohd Yusoff said this significant success was not achieved by chance, but was the result of well-organised efforts, sacrifices and meticulous planning by the entire team.
He called for the continued strengthening of cross-agency cooperation—not only to sustain current achievements, but also to serve as a catalyst for more aggressive efforts to combat smuggling along the border.
'Our objective is not merely to boost seizure statistics, but to safeguard the sovereignty, security and overall well-being of the Kelantan community,' he said.
He emphasised the urgent need to leverage digital technology and artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance enforcement capabilities and operational efficiency, and also underscored the importance of discipline and integrity among enforcement personnel, describing them as the cornerstone of public trust in the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).

Cops probing alleged extortion of Taiwanese woman at PJ roadblock

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have launched an investigation into a viral claim made by a Taiwanese woman alleging she was extorted by police officers during a roadblock in SS2, Petaling Jaya, near here. Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Shahrulnizam Jaafar (pic) said the Facebook account owner, a Taiwanese national, alleged that she was stopped at a police roadblock and was extorted by officers on duty. "Following that, police have initiated a full investigation under Section 384 of the Penal Code for extortion," he said in a statement. ACP Shahrulnizam also confirmed that the identity of the officers involved has been established and that investigations are ongoing. He stressed that the police take such allegations seriously and will not compromise when it comes to misconduct, regardless of whether the victim is a citizen or a foreign national, as such acts tarnish the reputation of the force. - Bernama

Police's Special Brach holds anti-terrorism exhibition

BATU KAWAN: The police have brought an anti-terrorism exhibition to the National Unity Week at the Batu Kawan Stadium grounds, aimed at raising public awareness of the dangers of involvement in terrorist activities. Federal police Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division (E8) staff officer ACP Ridzuan Abdul Aziz said the exhibition is also intended to enhance public understanding of terrorism threats and the importance of community cooperation in countering such activities. "We are bringing the exhibition closer to the public to clearly explain what terrorism and extremism are, so people can understand and avoid involvement in such activities, which not only harm individuals but also the nation," he told Bernama at the event. He said that while the exhibition is rarely held, it was featured at the Batu Kawan SMP this time to showcase various items to the public, including homemade bombs made by terrorist groups, terrorism-related books and terrorist passports. The Unity Week, held at Batu Kawan Stadium, Penang, will run from July 17 to 20 and feature 35 engaging activities for visitors. Among the highlights of the exhibition, Ridzuan said, are displays of seized items used in terrorist activities, visual presentations of high-profile arrest operations and interactive sessions with E8 officers who explain the processes of detecting and monitoring extremist elements. Through the exhibition, police aim to educate the public on the early signs of involvement in terrorism, while stressing the vital role of public awareness in curbing the spread of extremism and radical ideologies. "Previously, some Malaysians were influenced by foreign terrorist groups, such as those operating in Syria. "However, in recent times, we have observed a shift towards domestic terrorism. "That is why we are presenting this exhibition, to prevent, especially young people, from falling prey to terrorist groups, as they are highly exposed to such content through social media. "These groups actively recruit through platforms like Telegram," he said. Ridzuan described the exhibition as part of a 'prevention through education' approach, targeting all segments of society, particularly youth and students. "We cannot rely on enforcement alone. "The public must be educated on how radical ideologies operate and how they recruit victims, particularly through social media platforms. "We want to make it clear that terrorism is a real and present threat, not merely a narrative meant to ignite fear," he said. – Bernama

Kelantan cops raid gay meeting, seize condoms and HIV meds

Mohd Yusoff addresses the press conference. – Bernama photo KOTA BHARU (July 17): Police today confirmed a raid on a gay gathering involving more than 20 local men at a bungalow on Jalan Kemumin here in the middle of last month. Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the operation was launched based on public tip-offs and intelligence gathered by a special task force, following a report regarding a so-called 'food party' believed to be aimed at the gay community. 'Initial information indicated that over 100 local men were expected to attend the event. 'However, when the raid was carried out around 1am, most had already dispersed and only about 20 individuals remained at the scene,' he told a press conference at the Kelantan Police Contingent Headquarters here. He said intelligence reports revealed the event began at night and was intended to continue until morning, with participants required to pay a fee. The event was allegedly promoted via social media platforms, he added. Mohd Yusoff said during the raid, police discovered hundreds of condoms and several boxes of HIV medication in a room believed to have been used by the organisers as a store. 'Further investigations into the mobile phones of three individuals led to the discovery of recordings containing gay pornographic content. 'Out of the more than 20 individuals detained, only three were charged as they were found in possession of pornographic material on their mobile phones,' he said. He also said there was no evidence of sexual activity at the premises at the time of the raid, and everyone was still fully clothed. 'However, the presence of condoms and HIV medication suggests preparations were in place should such activity happen.' Mohd Yusoff said those involved were in their 20s to 30s and came from various backgrounds, including civil servants. 'This is the first reported gay gathering of its kind in Kelantan, and the police successfully acted to detect and raid the event,' he said. He also revealed that some of the participants were found to be HIV positive and were undergoing treatment, believed to be as a preventive measure. While no sexual activity was observed during the raid, he said police are treating the matter seriously, as such gatherings could serve as a platform for the spread of immoral activities and increase the risk of disease transmission, particularly HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. 'The police will continue to monitor the movements of such groups, as we are concerned that they are becoming more active and bold,' he said. He also urged members of the public to come forward with any information regarding the planning or promotion of such closed-door events, which are often circulated via social media and instant messaging applications. – Bernama gay gathering Kelantan LGBT
