No energy disruption yet, but industry to closely track prices

The Sun3 hours ago

KUALA LUMPUR:There is no global energy disruption so far, but industries will continue to closely monitor price developments, said S&P Global vice-chairman Daniel Yergin.
He said that while there is currently a surplus of oil, industries must remain vigilant and ensure that energy security measures are firmly in place to address any potential disruptions.
'We will just have to see what happens over the next three to five days. I think we don't know (the disruption issues expectation), as these decisions are beyond just being made by a few people.
'It is really the decisions between Jerusalem, Tehran, and Washington, and people have to make some very important decisions,' he told reporters after the Energy Asia 2025 closing ceremony here today.
He was responding to a question on the risk of supply disruption in the Middle East.
The conflicts in the Middle East have escalated dramatically following a series of attacks by two major oil-exporting countries, Israel and Iran, on each other's energy infrastructure.
The attacks have led to a potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical gateway to the world's oil industry.
At the time of writing, Brent crude oil prices decreased 0.38 per cent to US$76.16 per barrel.

PETRONAS: Energy demand to rise in Asia-Pacific region amid AI-led industrial shift

Petroliam Nasional Bhd (PETRONAS) president and group chief executive officer (CEO) Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik Tengku Aziz speaking at Energy Asia 2025 KUALA LUMPUR: Energy demand in ASEAN and the Asia-Pacific region is expected to rise in the coming years, driven by the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) under the Fifth Industrial Revolution, said Petroliam Nasional Bhd (PETRONAS). The growth in energy demand will also be fuelled by the perpetual hunger for growth, rightful justifiable pursuit of economic development, rapid urbanisation, growing middle income and the demographic within ASEAN and the Asia Pacific, PETRONAS president/group chief executive officer Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik Tengku Aziz said during the closing ceremony of Energy Asia 2025 conference here today. Tengku Muhammad Taufik said strong collaborations and purpose-driven partnerships are essential to navigating the evolving energy landscape. He added that both AI and energy are equally important to improve the energy ecosystem. "Looking at the energy ecosystem, it is indeed a more difficult prospect but probably even more facilitated because of AI. But, we believe AI will greatly and exponentially change energy systems once they are up and running," he added. Meanwhile, a total of 14 memoranda of understanding (MoUs) were signed during the three-day conference, which also featured seven roundtables and 11 launches, and welcomed 13,765 visitors. Wilmar posts US$729m security deposit amid Indonesian corruption appeal, PPB discloses

PPB Group Bhd has announced that its associate company, Wilmar International Ltd, has placed a security deposit of 11.88 trillion Indonesian rupiah (approximately US$729 million or RM3.44 billion) with the Indonesian Attorney General's Office (AGO), in connection with an ongoing court appeal involving five of its subsidiaries. In a filing with Bursa Malaysia today, PPB, which holds an 18.8% interest in Wilmar, said the announcement was made by Wilmar on the Singapore Exchange following a press conference by the Attorney General of Indonesia on the same day. The case stems from charges brought by the AGO in April 2024 against five Wilmar subsidiaries, namely PT Multimas Nabati Asahan, PT Multi Nabati Sulawesi, PT Sinar Alam Permai, PT Wilmar Bioenergi Indonesia, and PT Wilmar Nabati Indonesia, for allegedly causing financial losses to the state, making unauthorised profits, and harming the business sector during a domestic cooking oil shortage between July and December 2021. The AGO claimed that the alleged actions led to total state losses of IDR12.3 trillion (about US$755 million), and subsequently appealed a Central Jakarta Court decision that favoured the Wilmar entities. In its statement, Wilmar said the AGO requested the group to 'demonstrate their belief in the Indonesian judicial system and their good faith and innocence, by placing a security deposit' equivalent to part of the alleged losses and supposed illegal gains. The Wilmar subsidiaries have complied with this request. Wilmar stated that the 'Security Deposit will be returned… if the Indonesian Supreme Court upholds the decision of the Central Jakarta Court, but may be forfeited, in full or in part… if the Indonesian Supreme Court finds against the Wilmar Respondents.' The group reiterated: 'The Wilmar Respondents continue to maintain that all actions taken by them were taken in good faith and free from any corrupt intent.' — TMR
