IndusInd Bank crisis: ICAI to review financial statements of fraud-hit private lender for FY24, FY25

Mint29-05-2025

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) will review fraud-hit IndusInd Bank's financial statements for 2023-24 and 2024-25. The institute's Financial Reporting Review Board (FRRB) will carry out the review.
"It has been decided in the FRRB Board meeting today that FRRB of ICAI will undertake the review of the financial statements and the statutory auditor's reports of the IndusInd Bank Limited for the financial years 2023–24 and 2024–25," ICAI President Charanjot Singh Nanda told PTI on Thursday.
FRRB conducts the review of financial statements of companies to assess compliance with Accounting Standards, Standards on Auditing, Schedule II and III of the Companies Act, 2013, among others. FRRB assesses compliance with guidance notes on accounting and auditing, and master circulars/directions issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
Starting with a March 10 disclosure about a potential hit to the net worth because of incorrect recognition of derivative trades over the last two years, the last two months have been tumultuous for IndusInd Bank.
In March, the bank reported a ₹ 1,979 crore accounting lapse in its derivative portfolio, followed by its internal audit review finding ₹ 674 crore incorrectly recorded as interest from microfinance business, besides a ₹ 595 crore 'unsubstantiated balances' in 'other assets' of balance sheet.
On Wednesday, markets regulator Sebi barred former CEO of IndusInd Bank, Sumant Kathpalia, and four other senior officials from accessing the securities markets in connection with an alleged insider trading in the bank's shares.
IndusInd Bank reported a net loss of ₹ 2,328.9 crore on a consolidated basis for the fourth quarter ended March 31, 2025, mainly on account of higher provisioning and lower income.
The private sector bank has been embroiled in accounting lapses, fraud in microfinance portfolio and balance sheet disclosures during the March quarter of FY'25, which triggered an internal audit review, top-level resignations, and a forensics probe.
The bank had a consolidated net profit of ₹ 2,349.15 crore in the March quarter of 2023-24. The bank has made provisioning of ₹ 2,522 crore during the March quarter of FY25, up from ₹ 950 crore provisioning made in the corresponding period in FY'24.
Bank's interest income during the quarter fell 13 per cent to ₹ 10,634 crore from ₹ 12,199 crore in the March quarter of FY'24. For the full 2024-25 fiscal, IndusInd Bank reported over 71 per cent drop in net profit to ₹ 2,576 crore. In FY'24, the bank had a net profit of ₹ 8,977 crore.

GMADA to acquire 2,600 acres in big growth push for Mohali

In a significant step to further Mohali's growth, the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) will acquire 2,600 acres of land across multiple areas for residential, commercial, industrial and institutional development. The decision was taken during a meeting of GMADA's executive committee on Friday, chaired by Punjab chief secretary KAP Sinha. The land acquisition, aimed at accelerating urban expansion in Mohali, is expected to begin within the next month. According to the committee's decision, 236 acres will be acquired in Sector 87 for commercial use, 313 acres in Sector 84 for institutional purposes, 321 acres across Sectors 101 and 103 for industrial development, and a substantial 1,800 acres in Sectors 120 to 125 along the PR-7 road for residential projects, serving the increasing demand for housing. No more CLU permissions for private builders A senior GMADA official said, 'It has been decided to acquire 2,600 acres of land across different sectors. As a result, going forward, no Change of Land Use (CLU) permissions will be granted to any private builder in these areas. The decision will now be sent to Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann, who also serves as chairman of the Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority, for final approval.' Subsequently, a formal notification will be issued under the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013, announcing commencement of land acquisition. In lieu of the land acquired, land owners will be offered residential or commercial site plots under the Punjab government's land pooling policy. Further, sites will be carved out of the land acquired and allotted through public auctions. The GMADA official further emphasised that the acquisition in Sectors 120 to 124 was aimed primarily at curbing the proliferation of unauthorised colonies. Last month, Hindustan Times had reported the emergence of unauthorised colonies, covering nearly 50 acres across Sectors 120 to 123 and in villages such as Daun, Raipur, Behlolpur, Barmajra, Tarauli and Jhampur. These colonies were reportedly carved out of agricultural land without securing the mandatory CLU clearances, which require steep fees and official approvals. GMADA officials confirmed that development activities remained a top priority and that efforts to promote planned and legal growth will continue to be strictly enforced across the region. Aerotropolis also moving ahead after green nod Adding another chapter in Mohali's growth, GMADA's ambitious Aerotropolis project has received environmental clearance from the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority, paving the way for development of a world-class township. GMADA's seventh urban residential project, Aerotropolis will come up on more than 5,500 acres in the vicinity of Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport on both sides of the Banur-Zirakpur road. The other six townships include Aerocity, Knowledge City, IT City, all in the vicinity of the airport, and EcoCity, EduCity and MediCity in New Chandigarh, Mullanpur. The authority is pumping in ₹1,000 crore in Aerotropolis's capital development before launching the project. An extension of Aerocity, it will comprise both commercial and residential plots in four pockets – A, B, C and D. Expected to be around 8,500 in number, the residential plots will range from 100 to 2,000 square yards. The master plan also features expansive parks, sports complexes, shopping arcades, healthcare centres and green corridors—offering residents a holistic, high-quality urban living experience.

Mediator between bank agents, Hagawane held in vehicle case

The Pimpri-Chinchwad Police have arrested a 27-year-old man for allegedly acting as a middleman between Shashank Hagawane and three bank recovery agents to release a seized heavy machine. The accused, Pranay Tukaram Sathe of Kothrud, who works as a bank recovery agent, was arrested at around 2:50 pm on Friday. In this case, Shashank Hagavane, his mother and Sathe were remanded to police custody till June 7. Shivaji Pawar, DCP Zone-III, said, 'The accused was mediator between unauthorised bank recovery agents and Shashank Hagawane. Hagawane had sent ₹30,000 to Sathe through his driver Devanand Koli via GPay. Later, Sathe paid that amount to the arrested accused Ganesh Potale via the same mode.' Mahalunge MIDC Police on Thursday arrested three recovery agents of IndusInd Bank, Yogesh Raskar, Ganesh Potale, and Vaibhav Pingle, for allegedly seizing a JCB machine without authorisation. The machine, owned by Prashant Yelwande, was reportedly handed over to Shashank. According to the police, the bank's legal manager confirmed that no instructions had been issued to the recovery agency regarding the seizure. Despite this, the trio proceeded with the action, leading to their arrest. Yelwande, who lodged the FIR, alleged that Lata and Shashank Hagawane purchased JCB machines worth ₹24 lakh from him, paying an advance of ₹5 lakh. However, it was later discovered that the machines carried outstanding EMIs totalling ₹19 lakh with IndusInd Bank, which the Hagawanes had agreed to repay at ₹50,000 per month. According to the complaint, due to non-payment, the bank seized the machines in 2024, leaving Yelwande without either the equipment or the remaining payment. When Yelwande demanded his money back, he was allegedly threatened at gunpoint by the Hagawane family. A case was lodged at Mahalunge MIDC Police Station under IPC Sections 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal breach of trust), 34 (common intention), and Section 30 of the Arms Act.
