Japan's Shizuoka pocket park recognised as world's smallest
SHIZUOKA, Japan (Bernama-Kyodo): A "pocket park" in Shizuoka Prefecture, central Japan, has been recognised by Guinness World Records as the world's smallest, measuring just 0.24 square metre with space for only one person to sit on a wooden seat on a rock.
Located in a corner of a residential area in the town of Nagaizumi, the park consists of small square raised bricks, a few plants next to the stool, and two stone monuments, including one featuring the town's symbolic flower, Kyodo news agency reported.
The park had been dubbed by locals as the "world's smallest park" and served as a resting space for over 30 years. It was officially recognised by Guinness in December last year.
Situated about 300 metres from the town hall, the park was built in 1988 using leftover land from a road construction project.
The idea was proposed by a former town official who was inspired by Mill Ends Park in Oregon, the previous record-holder with an area of 0.29 square metre.
With local support, the town launched its challenge for the Guinness World Records title in 2023. It secured about 2.5 million yen (US$18,000) through its budget, online fundraising and private sector donations to cover related expenses.
The town hired a surveyor to measure the land and submitted a certificate confirming the park had existed for over five years. The space was also officially reclassified from a road section to a park.
Since earning Guinness recognition, the park has become a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors from outside Shizuoka.
"We hope this park will serve as an opportunity to promote our town," said Shuji Koyama of the town's construction management division. - Bernama-Kyodo

Another man from Wuhan, known as 'Lemon Can,' provides Ferrari rides for 99 yuan per half-hour. Describing himself as an optimistic racing enthusiast, he expresses his willingness to discuss work stress or relationship issues during the ride. 'You can also experience the powerful acceleration and enjoy the roar of the engine,' the 24-year-old shared. Wang, a university graduate from Fujian province in southeastern China, stated he has offered rides to six women so far, mostly after work, frequently taking them on scenic coastal drives. 'Many of them open up about their relationships, and I help them understand their boyfriends' behaviours,' he explained. One woman, heartbroken after a break-up due to infidelity, cried in his car for half an hour. She thanked him afterwards and gave him a polite hug. 'I believe a lot of people need this kind of support from strangers. A car can be a comforting space,' Wang remarked. He plans to take over his family's business by the end of the year, but for now, he is using this time to practise driving and meet new people. However, some netizens have expressed safety concerns, noting that drivers could learn the home addresses of women living alone. Wang reassured that he asks clients to book through a ride-hailing app, ensuring that each trip is tracked and monitored. One of Wang's clients shared that this new form of city ride has made her anticipate the end of the workday. 'It was my first time riding in a million-yuan car! The driver was humorous, and I often shared office gossip with him,' she said. Advertisement In a statement, the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (the Centre) said that the rankings were supported by Malaysia hosting 129 international association meetings, with the Centre accommodating some of the city's 78 international association meetings that year. 'To promote the global profile of both Malaysia and Kuala Lumpur, the Centre maintains a strong partnership with the Malaysia Convention and Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) —- an agency under the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture —- regularly collaborating at international trade shows to attract business events to the country. 'In the first half of 2025, the Centre was part of MyCEB's delegation at the Asia-Pacific Incentives and Meetings Event (AIME) 2025 in Melbourne and IMEX in Frankfurt,' it said.
