Saskatoon celebrates National Indigenous Peoples Day

CTV News22-06-2025
Wanuskewin welcomed many visitors on Saturday, as people gathered to recognize National Indigenous Peoples Day.
'Dancing, food, art, storytelling - all these different elements of culture we aim to showcase here. So, we want to really give people the opportunity to immerse themselves in culture,' said Andrew McDonald, co-executive director at Wanuskewin.
The day was filled with learning opportunities for visitors to the centre. One highlight was the chance to help process an elk hide.
'We've been softening and just processing one hide. We're going to do a beavertail in a little bit. And then we just have all the different parts of the animal and kind of the processes that you can see it through,' said Brad Belisle, senior interpreter at Wanuskewin .
The event was an opportunity to learn a bit about the history of how Indigenous people lived before colonization. Belisle said the resourcefulness and skill the first peoples had often surprises visitors.
'Just like amazement. Everything on the animals...they can be used and people just sometimes don't have the knowledge of what they can be used for,' Belisle said.
Throughout the day, visitors could participate in various educational experiences catering to different learning styles.
'There's something out here for everyone, so you can learn in a physical manner or just by watching - there's something for everybody,' Belisle said.

‘A tricky situation': SaskTel steps back as title sponsor of the Saskatchewan Jazz Festival

For the first time in nearly 30 years, SaskTel won't be attached to the name of the Saskatchewan Jazz Festival. The Crown corporation has held naming rights since 1998, part of a sponsorship package of $150,000 a year. ADVERTISEMENT Shannon Josdal, executive director of the festival, said organizers are busy searching for a new title sponsor and developing new branding. 'It puts us in a tricky situation, and it's a vulnerable situation,' Josdal said. 'We're the 10th jazz festival in Canada to have lost our title sponsor in about the last two years or so. This is something that's been endemic to the industry.' Josdal said there's no bad blood with SaskTel, pointing to the company's ongoing support over the decades. In an email to CTV News, SaskTel said it will still be involved in the festival, just at a smaller scale. 'This change is in no way a reflection of the quality or impact of the Saskatchewan Jazz Festival, which we continue to respect and admire,' SaskTel said. By backing off as title sponsor, SaskTel said it's better positioned to 'develop sponsorship agreements with other organizations and consider supporting new events and causes across Saskatchewan.'

Winner takes home $18,000 and Oasis tickets in Humane Society draw

One lucky Oasis fan will have lots of extra spending money when they go see the band perform in Toronto this weekend. The Humane Society of Kitchener Waterloo & Stratford Perth has drawn a winner in their VIP 50/50 raffle. Someone with the ticket 154887752 has won two Oasis Exhibition Fan packages, including tickets to the Rogers Stadium show on Aug. 24 and $500 in travel cash, plus $18,000 from the raffle. The animal welfare organization also claimed $18,000 through the raffle, which will be used to support their programs. This is the second time the Humane Society has hosted a wildly successful 50/50 event: in November, they held a similar draw for Taylor Swift tickets. The winner of that draw took home $362,000 and got to see the pop sensation live during one of her tour stops in Toronto.
