Registration is now open via the Open Masters Games official website, with entry fees set at Dh275 for UAE residents and Dh550 for international athletes.
Participants aged 25 years old and above can join in swimming, while rugby is only open to those aged 27+. Special rates of Dh100 are available for People of Determination and senior citizens. Registration will close on December 31.
Spots per sport category are limited, organisers clarified.
A celebration of sport
'We're always on the lookout for new experiences for our team,' said Perry Gardiner, co-founder of Calibre Masters swimming club. 'With swimmers from across the UAE and visitors from abroad, it's shaping up to be a fun and competitive event.'
The Calibre Masters Swimming Club, based in Dubai, offers swimming classes for adults and has built a community of competitive swimmers. 'We'd love to see as many of our swimmers as possible enjoying the experience, swimming fast and making the most of it,' Gardiner added. 'To have the chance to do all of that on such a big stage is a real privilege.'
Andy Fordham, Project Director at Zayed Sports City, who will compete in the cycling events of the games, told Khaleej Times: 'With 33 sports and more than 20,000 participants, I expect a true celebration of sport, diversity, and resilience across generations.'
The New Zealand director saw the games happening in his home country in 2017 and is now looking forward to participating and competing. 'I happened to be in my home country, New Zealand, during the 2017 Games held in Auckland. Although I wasn't a participant back then, I vividly remember the energy of it. Years later, I finally get to experience it as an athlete,' said Fordham.
'As for preparations, I've been balancing my training around work, focusing on both endurance riding and building up stamina for race day.'
For those willing to contribute to organising the games, volunteer applications are open via the Emirates Foundation, with opportunities in logistics, athlete support, and hospitality. Roles are available for students, professionals, and community volunteers.
'Volunteering in the Open Masters Games Abu Dhabi 2026 is more than just a contribution of time — it is a message of passion and belonging,' said Ahmed Taleb Al Shamsi, CEO of Emirates Foundation. 'The unity of volunteers embodies the spirit of collaboration toward promoting a healthy lifestyle and encouraging movement across all age groups.'

Kuwait gears up for DP World ILT20 Development Tournament

In a major boost for cricket in the region, the Kuwait Cricket Board has announced it will host the first-ever DP World ILT20 Development Tournament – Kuwait, scheduled to begin in September 2025 at Sulaibiya Cricket Ground. This milestone tournament aims to create a clear pathway for Kuwait's top cricketing talent to potentially earn a spot in the high-profile DP World ILT20, set to take place in Dubai this December. With the ILT20 already established as a premier franchise league attracting global stars, the Kuwait edition is expected to be a game-changer for aspiring cricketers in the country. The tournament will feature four competitive teams—Boubyan Warriors, Failaika Guardians, Pearl Strikers, and Kuwait Falcons—comprising a total of 60 players. The squads will include 19 contracted national team players, 10 junior emerging talents, and a selection of high-performing domestic cricketers, all handpicked by the Kuwait Cricket High Performance Committee based on key performance indicators. Across 14 high-octane matches, players will get the chance to demonstrate their skills, consistency, and readiness to compete at the franchise league level. Organisers believe the tournament will not only serve as a showcase of local talent but also elevate the overall standard of cricket in Kuwait. The action kicks off on Thursday with the announcement of the official draft list of selected players on KCC's social media platforms. The following day, on August 7, the names of the head coaches, captains, and managers for each team will be unveiled. An official draft event will be held on August 8 at the Sulaibiya Cricket Ground, where each team will select its 15-member squad, guided by the leadership trio of coach, captain, and manager. The DP World ILT20 Development Tournament – Kuwait promises to set a new benchmark for domestic cricket in the country, offering young and emerging players a golden opportunity to fast-track their careers and shine on a global stage.

Eight athletes to represent UAE at World Games in Chengdu

The UAE is taking part in the 12th edition of the World Games, scheduled to be held in Chengdu, China, from August 7 to 17, with a delegation of eight male and female athletes competing across three sports — jiu-jitsu, muaythai, and triathlon. The national jiu-jitsu team includes six athletes: Mohammed Al Suwaidi (69 kg), Mahdi Al Awlaki (77 kg), Saeed Al Kubaisi (85 kg), Asma Al Hosani (52 kg), Shamsa Al Amri (57 kg), and Shamma Al Kalbani (63 kg). In addition, Maryam Al Shamsi will represent the UAE in the triathlon competitions, while Mohammed Touizi will compete in muaythai. The Technical and Sports Affairs Department at the National Olympic Committee recently held a joint virtual meeting with the participating sports federations to review final preparations ahead of the global event, which will see over 5,000 athletes from 118 countries competing across 34 disciplines. The World Games, a multi-sport event held every four years, is organised by the International World Games Association (IWGA), a body recognised by the International Olympic Committee. The IWGA comprises 40 international sports federations. Since the UAE's debut at the 8th edition of the World Games in 2009 in Taiwan where Mohamed Shehab secured a bronze medal in snooker, the country has earned 12 medals in the event's history. Faisal Al Ketbi, a member of the national jiu-jitsu team, won both gold and silver medals in the 10th edition held in Poland in 2017. The national air sports team also added a bronze medal in the mixed category of parachuting at the same edition. The UAE's best-ever performance came in the previous edition in 2022, held in Birmingham, United States, where the delegation secured a record eight medals: two gold, one silver, and five bronze. The medals came in jiu-jitsu, muaythai, and freefall parachuting. Following the 11th edition in Birmingham, the UAE rose 10 places in the all-time World Games medals table to 56th place out of 101 participating countries. Italy maintained its lead in the cumulative medal standings with a total of 490 medals, despite finishing fourth in the 2022 edition with 49 medals.

McIlroy returns to defend DP World Tour Championship title

Grand Slam winner and five-time Major Champion Rory McIlroy will return to Jumeirah Golf Estates from November 13-16 to defend his DP World Tour Championship title at the season-ending Rolex Series event. The Northern Irishman delivered a masterclass in control and shot-making to claim his third DP World Tour Championship victory in 2024, sealing a record-equalling sixth Race to Dubai title to sit alongside the legendary Seve Ballesteros and further cementing his status as one of the most decorated players in Tour history. The 36-year-old has moved into joint second place for the most Race to Dubai victories and now sits two behind Colin Montgomerie, as he bids to add another European Number One crown to his already impressive career. The renowned Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates has been a prosperous venue for the world number two, who has won the DP World Tour Championship in 2012, 2015 and 2024 and topped the season-long standings in 2012, 2014, 2015, 2022, 2023, and 2024. McIlroy also has four additional victories in Dubai, and the Masters Champion currently leads the Race to Dubai Rankings ahead of Tyrrell Hatton by 1,109.51 points. He will spend two weeks in the UAE following confirmation that he will also tee it up at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship — the first event of the DP World Tour Play-Offs — qualifying for both season-ending events thanks to that thrilling victory at Augusta National, a fourth-place finish at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, a tied runner up finish at the Genesis Scottish Open, and tied seventh at The 153rd Open Championship at Royal Portrush. 'Dubai has always been a special place for me,' said McIlroy. 'Winning both the DP World Tour Championship and the Race to Dubai last year was an incredible way to finish the season. To equal Seve's record made it even more special. I've played some great golf this year and I'm looking forward to finishing strong again in front of the fans at Jumeirah Golf Estates.' The Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship is the first event of the DP World Tour's end of season showpiece, leading straight into the DP World Tour Championship where the Race to Dubai champion will be crowned. The top 70 available players at the conclusion of the Back 9 events will gather in Abu Dhabi for the fourth Rolex Series event of the year, with the top 50 teeing it up at the DP World Tour Championship as the season comes to a close in Dubai. McIlroy became the first European to win the career grand slam earlier this year when he added a Green Jacket to his four previous Major victories at the 2011 US Open, the US PGA Championship in 2012 and 2014 and The Open in 2014. He will look to clinch a fourth successive Race to Dubai title when he returns to the Middle East in November and a seventh Harry Vardon Trophy in total. Following record weekend crowds last year, free general admission tickets for Thursday and Friday are now available at The DP World Tour Championship also offers a fantastic day out for all, combining world-class golf with an array of exciting activities and experiences. The vibrant village ensures an incredible atmosphere, featuring dedicated activations for children, free golf lessons for all ages, Ladies Day celebrations, trick-shot shows, large screens for enhanced viewing, and engaging sports activations. Fans seeking an elevated experience can choose from a range of premium hospitality options. The Championship Chalet, situated on the 18th green, offers an exclusive vantage point to observe the thrilling conclusion of each round. The Earth Lounge, overlooking the 16th green, provides a chic and comfortable setting to relax and enjoy the action.
