Where Athlon Sports ranks Michigan football in 2025, eyes College Football Playoff return
Expectations for Michigan football aren't particularly high in 2025 across the media, yet some recognize that the Wolverines might be in a better position than many think.
With the over-under for the maize and blue set at 8.5, there are quite a few pundits expecting Michigan to hit the under, barely looking under the hood and noting the key losses on defense while not expecting much more on offense. However, the Wolverines showed in the ReliaQuest Bowl, with nine players expected to be factors in 2025, playing well on defense, holding Alabama to just 13 points, that that side of the ball should be solid. Meanwhile, Sherrone Moore overhauled the offensive side of the ball, bringing in former North Carolina and Auburn offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey while revamping the quarterback room.
Will Michigan football be ranked this year?
Unlike some of its contemporaries, Athlon Sports recognizes the changes that Moore and the Wolverines made, thus ranking Michigan in the middle of its post-spring top 25.
15. Michigan
After closing out the 2024 season with wins over Ohio State and Alabama, along with the commitment of 5-star quarterback Bryce Underwood, second-year coach Sherrone Moore has Michigan back on track.
If Underwood develops as expected, a return to the College Football Playoff is within reach. But the freshman won't have to carry this team. The backfield features a promising one-two punch of Jordan Marshall and Justice Hayes (sic), while optimism is high for an improved offensive line. Developing playmakers at receiver is crucial for new coordinator Chip Lindsey.
The Wolverines bring back six starters from a standout defense. Safety Rod Moore is slated to return after missing all of '24 due to a knee injury, and edge rusher Derrick Moore is among the Big Ten's top returning linemen.
The schedule breaks in Michigan's favor. Ohio State comes to Ann Arbor, and Moore's team won't play Oregon or Penn State.
Still an incomplete picture
While the six returning starters on defense is true of the regular season, it's not true of what Michigan trotted out in Tampa against the Crimson Tide. The whole starting front seven from that game, as well as one corner (Zeke Berry) and safety (Brandyn Hillman) are set to return.
If the offense just modestly improves, then the Wolverines should be back in the good graces of college football, especially considering that the schedule only features two teams (3. Ohio State, 20. Oklahoma) that Athlon features in its top 25. Last year, the Wolverines played four teams that were in the College Football Playoff, lost to three (Texas, Oregon, Indiana) and beat one (Ohio State).

Ohio State football announces future nonconference schedule changes
Ohio State football announces future nonconference schedule changes 🚨 Changes to @OhioStateFB 2029 and 2030 Schedules 🔘 Opening up the 2029 season with Navy, scheduled for Sept. 1, 2029 🔘 Added a game vs. Youngstown State to be played in Ohio Stadium on Sept. 15, 2029 🔘 Game vs. University of Nevada moved to Sept. 7, 2030 ➕:… — Ohio State Buckeyes 🌰 (@OhioStAthletics) June 4, 2025 With all the changes we've seen in college football the last few years, it sure seems like the same schedules that were made years in advance and mostly locked in have been adjusted more and more. Ohio State isn't immune either. We've seen additions, modifications, and cancellations of some of the future opponents as the Big Ten has expanded, the College Football Playoff has gotten bigger, and Name, Image and Likeness continues to change the landscape of talent on teams. On Wednesday, Ohio State announced further football nonconference schedule changes, and we're here to keep you in the loop. All told, there are three changes to the nonconference schedules in 2029 and 2030. Ohio State added a game against Navy for the season opener on Sept. 1, 2029. However, in order to make room for that game, the Buckeyes and the University of Nevada have agreed to move their previously scheduled game to Sept. 7, 2030. Ohio State also added a game against Youngstown State, to be played at Ohio Stadium on Sept. 15, 2029. That all means that the Buckeyes have just one game remaining to fill out their non-conference schedules over the next five years by way of the season opener on August 1, 2030. If anymore schedule changes come down the pipe during the offseason, we'll bring that to you, as well as other OSU athletics news. Patriots Rookie Running Back TreVeyon Henderson Predicted to Become Starter
Patriots Rookie Running Back TreVeyon Henderson Predicted to Become Starter originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Rhamondre Stevenson has kept a stronghold on the New England Patriots' starting running back job over the past two seasons, appearing first on the depth chart in 26 of the team's 34 games. Advertisement But Stevenson showed some chinks in his armor during the previous campaign, as he fumbled the ball seven times, which led to his benching at one point in the . Ball security will almost certainly be one of Stevenson's priorities heading into 2025, and improvements in that area will boost his stock in a competitive Patriots running back room. Bleacher Report's Mitch Milani, however, predicts Stevenson will eventually lose his spot on the depth chart to an up-and-coming talent: rookie TreVeyon Henderson. In fact, Stevenson topped Milani's list of "NFL Stars Who'll Lose Jobs," which Milani discussed in an episode of Bleacher Report's NFL Daily Live Show on Monday. 'Rhamondre Stevenson has a little bit more competition than he's had in previous seasons. Not only does he have a new regime, a new head coach and a former – but also new – offensive coordinator, but he also has a new member in his backfield," Milani said in the video. "TreVeyon Henderson – out of Ohio State, [a] second-round pick – was one of, if not the, most explosive running back in the entire draft class. And now, he is fighting, pushing Rhamondre for his starting job.' Ohio State running back TreVeyon Henderson (32) holds the national championship trophy after his team's defeat of Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff title game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Jan. 21, Cairns / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images Milani anticipates that Stevenson, should he lose the starting job, will continue to be relied upon and earn game reps in the backfield, but he believes Henderson has a higher ceiling in Josh McDaniel's offensive system, which has historically relied on pass-catching running backs. Advertisement "When we think of the Tom Brady era of Patriot football... We think of the Kevin Folk's, and the Shane Vereen's, and the James White's of the world," Milani said. "Henderson fits that role. But even more so, more expansively, he is a more explosive player, or [a more] highly-touted player, than any one of those running backs." Henderson, the No. 38 overall selection in the 2025 NFL Draft, is coming off a national championship season with Ohio State, which won the first-ever 12-team College Football Playoff in January. In his final season with the Buckeyes, he served as a team captain on offense and rushed for 1,1016 yards on 144 carries, resulting in him earning a place on the All-Big Ten Conference Third Team. Jack Nicklaus golfed three times on his honeymoon — and lived to tell about it
Jack Nicklaus golfed three times on his honeymoon — and lived to tell about it Jack Nicklaus played golf three times on his honeymoon – and lived to tell about it. During the June 1 presentation of the Jack Nicklaus Award, given to the nation's best college golfers, Division II recipient Adam Duncan, who is about to be married, asked the Golden Bear what advice he would give to a new husband who will be traveling the country playing golf. 'Is Barbara here?' Nicklaus asked the crowd. Upon learning his wife of 64 years, who is the 2025 Memorial Tournament honoree, was not yet in the media room, he added, 'OK, good, I can talk.' Laughter all around. Nicklaus, who met Barbara at Ohio State when both were freshmen, shared how she wanted to see New York City following the couple's wedding in 1960. 'She had never been out of Ohio and she wanted to go to New York City for her honeymoon,' he said. 'There's no golf in New York City' − Jack Nicklaus Jack's immediate thought: 'New York City for a honeymoon? There's no golf in New York City.' A lot of guys would get 'the look,' or worse, after a comment like that, but instead of taking a swing, Barbara got in the swing of things when her husband agreed to visit the Big Apple. 'We got married on a Saturday and drove over (to NYC) on a Monday and spent the night in Hershey, Pennsylvania,' Jack said. 'The fellow who was the head pro at Hershey was an assistant where I grew up at Scioto, and I called him and played golf at Hershey and Barbara walked around with me.' Nicklaus was just getting started. 'We went into New York and went to a couple shows and the second night we were there we went down to a little (jazz club) called Eddie Condon's,' he said. Nicklaus bumped into an acquaintance who wondered if 'Nick', as he was known, was planning to play at the famed Winged Foot Golf Club, located just north of the city. 'I thought you'd never ask,' Nicklaus said, with a wink. 'Anyway, the next day I go to Winged Foot and it's pouring rain, I mean buckets. Barbara went with me and a caddie and we were the only three people on the 36 holes of Winged Foot that day.' The next day, Barbara admitted she didn't want to spend two weeks in New York, so she suggested heading to Atlantic City, where she wanted to see the boardwalk. 'Of course, you go right by Clementon, New Jersey, to get there,' Nicklaus said, eyes brightening. Clementon is the home of Pine Valley, among the most prestigious private golf courses in the world. 'So we go to Clementon and I walk into the clubhouse and … I say 'I'm here with my wife.' They go, 'Your wife? Jack, this is a stag club, women are not allowed on the property.' Uh-oh. The club asked if he still wanted to play golf 'I said, 'Oh yeah, I'd love to play golf.' I was a 20-year-old kid,' he said. The Golden Bear lives a charmed, nine-lives life Clearly, the Golden Bear has nine lives, because he was still breathing after explaining to Barbara that she could not accompany him around the golf course. Watch the Memorial Tournament with a fubo free trial 'They took her around the outside and she had to peer through the fence and see me play golf,' he said. 'That basically was our honeymoon. We went to Atlantic City, looked at the boardwalk and said, 'Let's go home.' So we did.' Tongue firmly in cheek, Nicklaus added, 'How many women get to see Hershey, Winged Foot and Pine Valley on their honeymoon?' The epilogue? 'I'll tell you what, Barbara never complained one time about any of that,' Nicklaus said. 'She laughed and loves it and has been a great supporter. She's been my partner for 65 years now. A pretty good deal.' Sports columnist Rob Oller can be reached at roller@ and on at@rollerCD.
