Nine-year-old girl shot in the head after ‘planned assassination of rival gang members'

Independent22-07-2025
A nine-year-old girl was shot in the head when a gunman on a motorbike opened fire during 'a planned assassination' of rival gang members, a court has heard.
The girl was seriously injured when some of the bullets from the drive-by shooting missed their target as she was eating dinner with her family at the Evin restaurant in Kingsland High Street in Dalston, east London, on May 29 least year, the Old Bailey heard.
A bullet lodged in her brain while three other men – Mustafa Kiziltan, Kenan Aydogdu and Nasser Ali, who were seated with others at a pavement table outside the busy restaurant – were hit on various parts of their bodies.
Javon Riley, 33, has pleaded not guilty to four charges of attempted murder together with others and an alternative charge of causing grievous bodily harm with intent against the girl, who cannot be named because of her age.
It is alleged he played 'a key role before, during and after the shooting'.
Riley, of Tottenham, north London, carried out reconnaissance of the restaurant, travelled past the scene several times to ensure the target or targets were present before the shooting and he helped the gunman evade capture, it is alleged.
The gunman has never been tracked down.
On Tuesday, prosecutor James Mulholland KC said: 'The prosecution case is that this was a planned assassination of members of a rival gang by Mr Riley and others.
'This is evident from the degree of planning involved, his behaviour and comments before, during and after the event – as well as common sense.
'Those who wanted this shooting to take place put the planning of the event under Mr Riley's control, possibly with the assistance of others.'
Mr Mulholland added that the shooting appeared to have been part of 'an ongoing dispute' between two rival groups in London known as the Tottenham Turks and the Hackney Turks, also known as the 'Bombacilars', but the 'immediate reason for it was unknown'.
He said: 'These two gangs have had an intense rivalry for well over a decade which has involved the use of extreme violence towards one another during that period, and it is the prosecution case that what was intended was the murder of whomever was targeted.'
Those seated outside restaurant had affiliations towards the Hackney Turks and the ones who had ordered the shooting were from the Tottenham Turks, the prosecution say.
Mr Mulholland told the jury: 'You will hear in conversations covertly recorded in a car used by Javon Riley some time after the shooting that, although he was not a member of the Tottenham Turks, he clearly knew of them and was linked to them and that they were behind the shooting.'
It is not suggested that Riley fired the shots from the Ducati Monster motorbike which stopped briefly on the road outside the restaurant.
Jurors were told the rider 'raised his right arm and fired six shots in quick succession' which hit the three men sitting in a group outside, but also struck the little girl.
She has had to endure several intensive operations at Great Ormond Street Hospital, and the first had to be carried out the day after the shooting.
Mr Mulholland said: 'Sections of her skull were removed to relieve swelling to the brain and these have since been replaced with a titanium plate. She was in hospital for three months before being allowed to return home.
'Although she has made a relatively good recovery, she will continue to have physical and cognitive difficulties throughout her life.'
The wounded men were taken to Royal London Hospital where each was operated upon for serious injuries caused by bullet wounds to thigh, leg and backbone respectively.
Each appears to have made 'a reasonable recovery'.
It is claimed that Riley was 'vital in the carrying out of the plan to kill'.
The court heard that after the shooting, the gunman rode the motorbike to a nearby street where Riley was waiting in a stolen Nissan Juke on false plates before they 'calmly' headed to north London before transferring into Riley's Range Rover.
Covert police recordings in the months after the shooting, show Riley talking about a man called Izzet Eren, who is linked to the Tottenham Turks and was shot in Moldova on July 10 last year in what was believed to be a revenge attack.
He also spoke about a man called 'Kem', whom the prosecution believe is Kemal Eren – one of those closely involved in the Tottenham Turks.
Within two days of the shooting two vehicles, a Mitsubishi Outlander and the Nissan Juke, which had been used for reconnaissance, were torched, the jury was told.

Family of 10 dine and dashers barge their way out of pub after refusing to pay £320 food bill

A family of 10 'barged their way out' of a popular pub after refusing to pay the £320 food bill. Kelly Jollife, 49, landlady of the Greyhound Inn in Usk, Wales, said the dine and dash incident had taken place last Sunday. She alleged each member of the large group ordered a starter and main course, consumed them fully, but then refused to pay for anything other than their drinks. Ms Jollife added the family then 'barged past' the pub's chefs and departed in two cars. In a social media post, she explained: 'Warning to all other restaurants and pubs Shocking thing happened today with us here at the Greyhound. 'After doing 150 fabulous roast dinners today unfortunately one table of 10 decided they were not going to pay their £328.90 bill after eating everything. 'It then got extremely confrontational between them and my team.' Police have confirmed they are investigating an allegation of theft. The incident took place at the Greyhound Inn in Usk (pictured), Wales, said the dine and dash incident had taken place last Sunday Ms Jollife told WalesOnline the customers had looked at her as they were walking out as if to say, "you can't do anything anyway so, tough". She said: 'When they first came in they were not particularly nice to begin with. I had explained to them it was table service but they kept insisting on coming up to the bar. That kind of thing. 'They were gonna do it their way. So they ordered starters, mains and ate all the starters, then half way through their mains the waiter went to check if everything was ok, and they said, "no it is all s**t. Everything is s**t. It is all just shocking".' She recalled the waiter had then asked if the group wanted to speak to the manager to which they said 'yes' but 'after we have finished'. The family of 10 then 'proceeded to eat everything' while there were 150 people in house. Ms Jollife pointed out 140 of the customers had 'left happy'. But she was then called over to the group's table where they refused to pay, 'putting £44 on the table in cash' before walking out. Ms Joliffe said she followed some of the group down the path with her chefs as they were 'bigger than me' at which point 'one of the older guys' got into a confrontation with one of the chefs. The chefs were said to have then commented 'look, you are an embarrassment, just pay the bill'. The confrontation was mostly verbal but amid the shouting of 'you need to pay your bill' the group of 10 'got in the car and left the property'. Ms Jollife revealed she had contacted Gwent Police about the alleged incident, explaining the post had garnered a lot of reaction on social media after she shared details. She said the post had been designed to 'embarrass' the supposed culprits, stating: 'It's not the way to behave. But the response I had on Facebook was just phenomenal. Everybody is so supportive.' A spokesman for Gwent Police stated: 'We're investigating an allegation of theft in Usk Road, Llantrisant, which occurred around 3pm on Sunday 27 July. Officers are speaking to several people to establish the circumstances and enquiries continue.'

Strictly's Michelle Tsiakkas shares terrifying mugging ordeal on Good Morning Britain - and is stunned when Kate Garraway reveals her own phone was snatched with scathing swipe at police

Strictly star Michelle Tsiakkas has opened up about her terrifying mugging ordeal in London - and was left stunned when Kate Garraway revealed her own phone was snatched. The professional ballroom dancer appeared on Good Morning Britain to discuss the growing phone-swiping epidemic. Michelle had been walking to the dentist in Covent Garden one morning when her mobile was promptly taken out of her hands, despite the 'quiet streets'. The 29-year-old told hosts Kate and Ed Balls: 'I was on my way to the dentist. It was a new dentist, I hadn't been there before. It was early morning - around 9am. 'I took my phone out and, within about five to ten seconds of me taking it out, it was grabbed - gone.' A stunned Kate gasped: 'Wow,' before co-host Ed queried: 'Were you even thinking about phone safety?' 'I'm generally quite aware, I would say, as a person,' Michelle said. 'I look around me - but you can't predict these things. 'And this is why I would advise everyone to be super careful because even when you think you're well aware of your surroundings - these criminals are professionals. 'They come out of nowhere and your phone is gone.' The segment also featured a police officer who explained the protocol to follow in the event of having a phone stolen. But mother-of-two Kate was not impressed, and told of her own phone theft ordeal where she felt she had not received adequate police support. 'That has not been my experience,' she said. 'Is there something different to do if something is swiped off you physically?' The 58-year-old revealed she had had several phones stolen while living in London, and none of the thefts had been resolved. 'I've had phones stolen in London in a bag. I've tried to report it and they've said, "Do you want the insurance code number?" 'There was no sense that the police were going to come, look at the area and see where it might be.' In a separate video shared online, Michelle discussed the seemingly safe street in which she had her phone swiped. 'I was the only person around, so maybe I was an easy target,' she said. 'A man comes on a bike behind me, sweeps past me and grabs my phone. 'So he's grabbed my phone, he's on an electric bike, and my heart just sank. I tried to, I think, reach for it and that made me fall on my knees on the floor and graze my knee.' It comes as GMB viewers were left 'wincing' as Kate made a 'disrespectful and insensitive' joke at the worst possible time. A recent episode of the ITV breakfast news show saw the presenter with co-host Adil Ray, 51, report a particularly sad story to viewers. It was about British grandmother Yvonne Ford, 59, from Barnsley, South Yorkshire, who sadly died from rabies. Kate explained: 'Did you see this extraordinary story about a woman, she was scratched very slightly by a stray dog whilst on holiday in February, that long ago, in Morocco. 'It wasn't even a particularly bad one at the time. It didn't seem to be infected. Then two weeks ago, she started to feel very unwell, has now passed away.' Before making an ill-timed quip, she added: 'It's made people very conscious because rabies is something we don't think about very much. It is astonishing.' It came as she mentioned TV doctor Hilary Jones, 72, who often appears on the show for health and wellbeing segments. She said: 'I mean, what the doctors say, if I can do my Dr Hilary at the moment for a bit, is make sure you get an inoculation. 'But also, if you have any kind of scratch from any kind of wild animal or animal abroad, get treatments right away, because then it can be stopped.' Rabies - which is passed on through injuries such as bites and scratches from an infected animal - is nearly always fatal.

Cops still hunt for HEAD of mystery decapitated man found dumped in Brit hols hotspot as new theory on killing emerges

COPS are still hunting for the head of a decapitated man mysteriously found dumped in the middle of the street in central Lisbon. The corpse was found on Patio Salema, a narrow, dead-end street in the historic centre of the popular British holiday destination. 3 3 The street is behind the Lisbon Coliseum and just a stone's throw from many of the city's main tourist sites and picturesque squares. Shockingly, a police source said the man's head was "not at the scene" and they are still trying to find it. The body has now reportedly been identified as belonging to an undocumented African man. But the circumstances behind his decapitation are still a mystery to cops. A new theory has emerged as to what may have happened to the man following the gruesome find. Portuguese Judicial Police (PJ) took over the investigation and is now looking into the possibility of a crime linked to drug trafficking and territorial disputes, Correio reports. Authorities were alerted early on Wednesday, after which they rushed to the scene and cordoned off the street to investigate. The narrow alleyway leads down to Rossio, one of the main squares for tourists and locals alike. Gustavo Silva, a commentator for CNN Portugal, said that this type of crime "occurs in a very specific context". He issued a warning to the public: "It's macabre and heinous, but people should remain calm." Criminal psychology expert Carlos Alberto Poiares told Sic Noticias: "One thing is clear: the crime wasn't committed there; the body was dumped there. "If he had been decapitated there, the scenario would certainly have been different." Bizarrely, just hours earlier, the body of a woman was found in the boot of a car nearby. The woman in her 50s was discovered in Costa da Caparica on the outskirts of the capital. The body was found when passersby on the beach noticed a strong smell coming from the car. It is believed the woman was getting changed in the boot of the car which had no backseats while she suffered a heart attack. Her belongings were found in the car, suggesting she may have been living inside it. Lisbon is known as one of the safest European capitals with a very low crime rate. 3
