Doral's Abdullah and Villazon are the Dade 7A-4A Softball Player and Pitcher of the Year
The pressure was on this season for the Doral Academy softball team.
After three consecutive trips to the state final four had not resulted in a state championship, junior shortstop Anabela Abdullah didn't want another opportunity to slip away.
Senior Meagan Villazon felt it too.
She stepped into the primary pitching role this season and didn't want to let her teammates down.
For Villazon and Abdullah and the rest of the Firebirds, it was mission accomplished.
The duo was at the heart of Doral's march to its second state title, its first since 2021, and a top 3 national ranking.
The Firebirds finished the season 31-1 and capped their season with a dramatic 5-4 comeback win in eight innings over Valrico Bloomingdale in the Class 6A state semifinals before beating Pace 1-0 in the final.
'It's even more special since it came our senior year,' Villazon said. 'We worked so hard to get to this and it was definitely worth it.'
As such, Abdullah is the Miami Herald's Miami-Dade County Softball Player of the Year and Villazon is the Dade Pitcher of the Year for Classes 7A-4A.
'It was more like relief because that was our goal and we had been there like six years in a row,' Abdullah said. 'We've been No. 1 in the state the entire year so we had to make sure we won it this time. Our seniors are a group of five girls that played together since the sixth grade and I joined that in the seventh grade so we were really close as a team. We had no holes and we were just a big family and everyone was in synch.'
Abdullah, who won a gold medal with Team USA's Under-15 team three years ago, earned a chance at another as she will participate on the Under-18 squad this September in Oklahoma City.
Abdullah, a University of Texas commit, is regarded as one of the best defensive shortstops in the country, which she credits to the tutelage of her longtime coach at Doral, Willie Viruet - the Herald's 7A-4A Coach of the Year.
'(Viruet) is the only defensive coach I've had since I was six and he works with me every single day,' Abdullah said.
But Abdullah added some power to her already strong hitting tools this season.
Abdullah hit .582 and belted a career-high 15 home runs. She also hit 12 doubles, four triples and drove in 59 runs overall.
'My travel coach, Scott Smith, helped me with the mental part,' Abdullah said. 'But I also got in the gym and added some power. I was a lot more comfortable with my swing.'
Villazon split some starts last season with former Doral ace Yessenia Lopez, who now pitches at UCF. She knew the responsibility was hers to carry on a pitching legacy at the school.
Villazon, an FIU signee, more than lived up to expectations, going 26-1 with an 0.63 ERA, and striking out 261 batters in 145 innings. Villazon also hit .475, with two home runs, nine doubles and finished with 45 RBI.
'It felt like I had big shoes to fill, but I just worked as hard as I could to perform well enough for my team and win it, and pushing myself was so much fun,' Villazon said.

Jalen Ramsey trade rumors: Dolphins CB not expected at mandatory minicamp
Jalen Ramsey trade rumors: Dolphins CB not expected at mandatory minicamp Show Caption Hide Caption Greg Olsen expresses excitement for upcoming Olympic flag football Former TE Greg Olsen is excited for some NFL players to showcase their skills in the upcoming 2028 Summer Olympics and the debut of flag football. Sports Seriously The Miami Dolphins and Jalen Ramsey mutually agreed to seek a trade for the veteran cornerback a couple of weeks ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft. Ramsey remains on Miami's roster nearly two months later, but it appears the two parties are still planning to split before the 2025 season. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Ramsey is not planning to attend the Dolphins' mandatory minicamp this week as the two parties "continue to work towards a trade." Miami's minicamp will run from June 10-12. If Ramsey does not attend, he will be subject to a fine for each day he misses. According to Spotrac, a player fine will be a maximum of $17,462 for the first day absent, $34,925 for the second day and $52,381 for missing a third day. The NFL's new CBA only allows fines to be forgiven on rookie deals, so it doesn't appear Miami will be able to waive any fines assessed to Ramsey. JALEN RAMSEY LANDING SPOTS: Rams, Raiders among best fits if Dolphins trade CB Ramsey has four years remaining on his contract with the Dolphins, as the three-year, $72.3 million extension he signed with the team on eve of the 2024 NFL season still hasn't kicked in yet. He is set to have a cap hit of just under $16.7 million this season while taking home $25.1 million in cash, per The Dolphins will be able to split any dead-cap hit – guaranteed money already paid to a player no longer on the team – associated with trading or releasing Ramsey over two seasons because the NFL's June 1 deadline has passed. Making it palatable for Miami to trade Ramsey, as it would take manageable dead-cap hits of roughly $10.75 million in 2025 and $18.5 million in 2026 while creating $5.9 million in space for the upcoming season. Releasing Ramsey would be more penal. The Dolphins would take on just under a $31 million dead-cap hit this season – which would cost them $14.3 million in present-day cap space – while still absorbing a dead-cap blow of $18.5 million next season. It isn't clear whether the Dolphins are willing to release Ramsey if they can't find a willing trade partner.

Ramsey not expected to attend mandatory minicamp as Dolphins continue to seek a trade
Dolphins cornerback Jalen Ramsey is not planning to attend the team's mandatory minicamp this week as the sides continue to seek a trade for the seven-time Pro Bowl cornerback. That revelation, reported by NFL Network on Sunday, wasn't a surprise. The Dolphins previously confirmed that they are trying to trade Ramsey. While Miami has characterized it as a decision in the best interest of both parties, Ramsey wants out, sources said. The Dolphins, to this point, have been unable to find a team willing to give them not the only trade compensation they want, but also pay most or all of his $25.1 million salary this season. ESPN's Adam Schefter recently reported that there's more interest in Ramsey than people realize, but that purported interest has not resulted in a trade to this point. Ramsey has never directly explained why he wants out of Miami but gave a strong hint when he posted a photo of rotten oranges on the first night of the NFL Draft, alongside a caption that read as an indictment of the Dolphins organization. 'Who you surround yourself with matters,' the first part of the caption read, followed by a short inscription underneath the picture that said 'If you surround yourself with people who are okay with mediocre, you too will start to be okay with it... surround yourself with people who desire GREATNESS!' A trade will lower Ramsey's 2025 Dolphins camp hit from $16.7 million to $6.7 million, leaving Miami with $24 million in cap space if he's traded for a future draft pick. That money can be carried over to next offseason if the Dolphins don't use it all this season. Ramsey will have another $18 million in dead money on Miami's 2026 books if he's traded in the weeks ahead. Aside from nickel cornerback Kader Kohou, the Dolphins don't have a proven starting cornerback on their team. Their other corners under contract: former second-round pick Cam Smith (a disappointment so far), Storm Duck (who made the team as an undrafted rookie last season), Kendall Sheffield (who signed last month after a tryout but hasn't started a game since 2020), rookie fifth-rounder Jason Marshall Jr., undrafted rookies BJ Adams (from UCF) and Ethan Robinson (Minnesota), Ryan Cooper Jr. (a former Ohio State standout), Artie Burns (a former Miami Hurricanes standout who played 51 defensive snaps for Seattle last year), second-year player Isaiah Johnson and Ethan Bonner, who played just 16 defensive snaps last season and 27 over two years. The Dolphins have maintained contact with veteran free agent cornerback Rasul Douglas, who rejected a Miami offer earlier this month. Douglas started 15 games for the Bills this season. They've also inquired about former Ft. Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas standout and ex-Chargers free agent cornerback Asante Samuel Jr., a free agent who's recovering from neck surgery. He expects to be able to play this season. Other established cornerbacks still unsigned include James Bradberry, Stephon Gilmore, Mike Hilton and C.J Henderson. The Dolphins have been linked to Hilton, the former Bengals slot corner, at different times this offseason. Ramsey -- who was a first-team All Pro in 2017, 2020 and 2021 -- presumably has finished his Dolphins career with 82 tackles, five interceptions and a sack in 27 games, all starts. He made the Pro Bowl in his first of two seasons in Miami. The Dolphins will hold a mandatory minicamp Tuesday through Thursday, then adjourn until training camp begins the week of July 21.

Former Man United defender Marcos Rojo on Inter Miami's radar
Former Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo is on Inter Miami's radar this summer. The Argentine defender signed for the Red Devils in 2014 and played 122 times for the club. His time in England was characterised by rashness and serious injury, playing just 17 times for the club in his final three seasons in Manchester. Advertisement The defender left the club in 2020 for Boca Juniors in his native Argentina and has played 133 times for the South American giants. Rojo is still a regular starter and has been named captain of the team on numerous occasions. Nonetheless, his future at Boca is far from clear as he is yet to be offered a new deal. TNT Sports report that Rojo may have played his last game in Argentina as Inter Miami have expressed interest in the defender. The outlet states that there could be 'an unexpected twist regarding Marcos Rojo's future at Boca Juniors.' The report continues, 'one of the biggest questions surrounding Boca Juniors concerns the future of Marcos Rojo, one of the team's key players. While he still has a contract, his continued presence at the club is by no means assured.' Advertisement Complicating matters further, the former United man is very much 'on the radar' of David Beckham's Inter Miami. It is stated that the imminent arrival of defender Marco Pellegrino could put Rojo's place in the team under strain despite the fact he is still viewed as a 'top player' by the club's hierarchy. Boca's new manager, Miguel Ángel Russo, has hardly been overly-committal on Rojo's future claiming, 'it's my decision who plays and who doesn't. I'm very calm about these things.' Were he to join Inter Miami, he would team up with fellow Argentine Lionel Messi. What's more, he would have another fellow compatriot in the current head coach of the team, Javier Mascherano.
