Kate makes hands-on visit to examine museum's exhibits
The Princess of Wales marvelled at the 'eclectic' collection of the V&A when she ordered and touched its exhibits like members of the public.
Kate visited the new V&A East Storehouse in London's Stratford to learn about its 'order an object' system where paintings, furniture, books and sculptures can be requested and a room set aside for viewing with staff.
With a keen interest in the arts and a love of the natural world, she choose a number of items themed around nature, a large William Morris samples book, rolls of ornate textiles and a musical instrument for the private moment.
More than 500,000 creative works, from individual items to whole collections like the Glastonbury festival archive, are stored at the site, the majority of the V&A's collection.
Kate, patron of the V&A, told its deputy director and chief operating officer Tim Reeve 'it's so eclectic' as they stood in a huge space housing objects around them adding: 'It's all part of the process of displaying and curating.'
The princess wore a smart trouser suit for the visit to the storehouse in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and wore stiletto heels despite the attraction's website advising on flat shoes as the 'metal grid flooring is not suitable for stilettos or kitten heels'.
Mr Reeve said later about Kate: 'It's clear today she really loves the idea of what we're trying to do, show that back-of-house world and to be a member of the public seeing that behind-the-scenes experience is what this is about.
'She's obviously fortunate to see quite a bit of the back-of-house world, but I think she really understood today that she was sharing it with the public, everyone is seeing the same space, everyone has that privileged access to our collection.'
Commenting on the items Kate had asked to be shown, he added: 'I did have a look at what was laid out, and some amazing things as always, an amazing musical instrument, there's lots of stuff that's related to nature.
'One of the things I saw that she'll be super interested in is this big William Morris fabric sample book, it's an enormous thing and you can sort of flick through.'
Items stored at the site include a drum kit used by Keith Moon, former drummer with The Who, examples of Queen Elizabeth II's dresses designed by Norman Hartnell, and from September David Bowie's archive, donated by his estate, will be available.
She began her visit by viewing with V&A director Tristram Hunt a table, wardrobe and corner cupboard designed by art historian and artist Roger Fry, who influenced the Bloomsbury artists, and made by his Omega Workshops.
Later Kate put on a purple rubber glove to handle a 19th century female riding habit – skirt, waistcoat and jacket – and marvelled at its red colour as she touched its lining and was also shown an Alexander McQueen dress coat.
Photographer Sarah Duncan talked Kate through the process of taking an image of ballet shoes worn by Alicia Markova, when she danced the lead role in the 1934 production of Giselle, and was told 'you want scratches to shine' as the image would document the item.
In another part of the building, the princess chatted to Christina Juan, lecturer and head of the Philippines department at the School of Oriental and African Studies, who happened to be in the room next to Kate's private viewing and was examining delicate fabrics from the Philippines.
The lecturer was studying turban scarves from the 1850s and said later: 'I told her they were made from banana leaves. She was just surprised at the sheerness of the cloth and asked was it still made.'
She said about the process of seeing the items: 'It's amazing I can just go online and order – it's very easy, like ordering an Uber.'

Prince Andrew appears in high spirits as he enjoys horse ride around Windsor
Prince Andrew looked to be in high spirits as he joined his late mother's long-standing stud groom Terry Pendry for a horse ride around Windsor today. The King's younger brother, 65, beamed in excitement as he sported riding gear, including a helmet and gloves, along with a khaki jacket this afternoon. Alongside him was Mr Pendry, who rode with Queen Elizabeth for 28 years and was one of her most loved and trusted servants. On July 18, 2022, less than eight weeks before her death, she came down to the stables as usual to see her beloved horse Emma, bringing the steed a bag of carrots. There was, Mr Pendry has said, a quiet sense of finality to the 96-year-old's purpose, although nothing was said. The servant, who at one time looked after around 100 of the Royal Family 's horses and ponies, said: 'The very last time with her wasn't a ride, I walked. She was quite frail. 'She actually ended up being smaller than Queen Elizabeth [her mother], her last four years when she was quite poorly.' This afternoon, Mr Pendry sported a button-up shirt and tie along with a beige riding helmet as he joined Prince Andrew for the day out. Elsewhere, snaps from the day showed the royal at the wheel of a car, sporting a burgundy top. It comes amid a tumultuous time for Charles's brother, after Virginia Giuffre 's lawyer demanded an apology from Andrew in the wake of her death - after her family revealed she was prevented from seeing her children for months before she died. Speaking on Piers Morgan Uncensored in April, David Boies said the Prince had to take responsibility and even went on to request King Charles to intervene. 'I'd like to have him say, "I'm sorry", he sort of said that, but I'd like him to be more direct about that,' the acclaimed American attorney said defiantly on the talk show. 'I'd like him to say, even if he doesn't remember what happened, I think he needs to recognise that he had, he clearly had sex with young girls, with Jeffrey Epstein. 'I mean, he may not remember that it was Virginia, but he can't forget the event. And he needs to just come clean.' Virginia claimed Jeffrey Epstein and former girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell kept her as a sex slave, flying her around the world for sex with powerful associates. She later accused the Duke of York of sexually assaulting her when she was 17 after she was trafficked to London. It led to him 'stepping back' from public life in 2019. He has always vehemently denied any wrongdoing. She then launched a civil lawsuit, alleging she was coerced into having sex with him. In 2022 the Duke agreed an out-of-court settlement – thought to be between £3 million and £12 million – despite denying he sexually abused her. The mother-of-three was found dead at her farm near Perth, Australia, on April 25, in what was believed to have been a suicide. Following her sudden death at the age of 41, Boies said: 'It's just a question of taking responsibility, accepting responsibility for what happened. Maybe he has a version of what happened, but he can't deny that he was with her. 'I mean, you've got the photograph, you've got the testimony from other people. Continuing to deny he didn't know her, he never met her, he had nothing to do with her. That's not productive. It's also not right. 'I think that he needs to take responsibility for what he did. Virginia was always more interested in fighting the sin than attacking the sinner, and I think that she would have accepted Prince Andrew taking responsibility, and would have recognised that. 'And I think that it's not too late. It's never too late… If he wants redemption, if he wants forgiveness, he's got to take responsibility for what happened. 'He came pretty close in that statement. It was a step in the right direction. And I think I hoped, and I think Virginia hoped, that he would take the next step as well. Andrew was pictured behind the wheel of a car from photos taken this afternoon, when he enjoyed a horse ride 'Unfortunately, for whatever reason, maybe his advisors, he didn't. But I think, as I say, it's not too late for him or for anyone'. MailOnline approached Prince Andrew's representatives for comment at the time. Karrie Louden, Giuffre's lawyer, told The Sun that the mother had showed 'no signs' of wanting to end her life. 'We've got big question marks over it. There's suicide, then there's misadventure', she said. Louden added that Virginia was planning the future, and looking forward to it just this time last week, and that 'things were positive'. 'The police were just very, very vague. I know that she's gone but I don't know. I'm not sure we'll ever know'. The Perth coroner confirmed their own investigation, but the report could take two years. Before she died, family members had expressed fears over her mental state. Her father Sky Roberts said his daughter was 'very depressed' and 'in really bad shape'. Speaking to People, Roberts explained his daughter had been grappling with the complexities of a restraining order her husband had taken out against her in February that prevented her from seeing her children aged 19, 16, and 15, until June. He claimed she had violated the order, which she denied. 'It's the worst pain in the world to not have access to your children,' Roberts said. 'Can you imagine the pain? I will tell you, all the physical (pain) will never amount to the pain of being separated from your children in that way.' Before she died, Virginia had been allegedly physically abused by her husband of 22 years, Robert Giuffre, the father of her three children, from whom she separated in 2023, Sky and sister-in-law Amanda said. Her husband has not responded to the allegations. Friends of the 41-year-old also said Giuffre was 'deeply upset' about being mocked over a picture she posted of herself in a hospital bed last month. She claimed she had been involved in a car crash that left her with only four days to live – but the accident was nothing more than a minor bump. A spokesman for Virginia said she had 'made a mistake' and had not intended to make the post public. But it led to claims that the episode had destroyed her credibility, with some of Andrew's supporters calling her a 'fantasist'. Emergency services received a report about a woman found unresponsive at a home in Neergabby, 12 miles north of Perth, at about 9.50pm local time on Friday. She was declared dead at the scene. 'She lost her life to suicide, after being a lifelong victim of sexual abuse and sex trafficking,' said her family's statement. Two weeks earlier, Virginia posted several photographs of her three 'beautiful babies', writing: 'I miss them so very much. I have been through hell and back in my 41 years but this is incredibly hurting me worse than anything else. Hurt me, abuse me but don't take my babies. My heart is shattered and every day that passes my sadness only deepens.' Following her death, Boies told Piers Morgan: 'She was an extraordinarily strong woman, ultimately brought down by years of abuse at the hands of Jeffrey Epstein and then later years of verbal abuse and attacks by [his] collaborators, but she accomplished a great deal without her courage and without her coming forward, Jeffrey Epstein would probably still be abusing young girls'.

Donald Trump to visit Kennedy Center for Les Mis - as cast members 'plan to boycott'
Les Miserables, what else. The hit musical about anti-government protest is now showing at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC. Donald Trump will be in the audience for Wednesday's performance for what amounts to a busman's holiday. The script of Les Miserables barely presents a break from the day job - Trump won't be the only one getting a sense of art imitating life, as the real thing plays out on the streets of LA. It is the first show the president has chosen to attend since he made sweeping changes at the iconic venue, prompting an outcry and accusations that he was politicising art and 'MAGAfying' the venerated institution. According to CNN, a number of Les Miserables cast members plan to sit out the performance in protest. The Kennedy Center is a prestigious venue that showcases the best of American performance art. More than 2,000 shows per year include the famous honours ceremony, an annual event that celebrates artists who have made a significant contribution to US culture. Honourees through the years have included Joni Mitchell, Aretha Franklin, the Grateful Dead and Francis Ford Coppola. Following his election in November, Trump made himself chairman of the Kennedy Center's board and replaced members with political loyalists. Traditionally, the board has been made up of individuals from across the political spectrum; after his election, Trump got rid of 18 members and replaced them with political soulmates, including his chief of staff Susie Wiles and Fox presenters Laura Ingraham and Maria Bartimoro. Donald Trump signalled a change in artistic direction at the Kennedy Center when he wrote on social media of "Drag shows specifically targeting our youth", and said of its production schedule: "We didn't like what they were showing, we're going to make sure it's good and it's not going to be woke." His changes prompted a number of acts to cancel shows at the venue in protest. The touring production of Broadway hit Hamilton cancelled dates, as did actor and producer Issa Rae, writer Louise Penny and Pulitzer Prize-winning folk musician Rhiannon Giddens. 👉 Follow Trump100 on your podcast app 👈 Trump's attendance at the Les Mis performance is designed to boost fundraising, with donors paying up to $2m to attend a reception with the president. Ticket sales and subscriptions have, reportedly, slumped since Trump's changes although the centre's management points out its campaign to renew subscriptions has been launched later this year than last. Trump is expected to watch the performance of Les Miserables from the presidential box, in the company of his wife, Melania. Vice president JD Vance will also be there. When he attended a performance by the National Symphony Orchestra in March with his wife, he was booed by members of the audience.

Fans slam Love Island as boring as they notice one major change in series' first week - and call for MORE bombshells as two new boys enter
Love Island fans weren't hugely impressed with Wednesday night's episode as they slammed it as being 'boring'. Three episodes in and there haven't been any challenges yet - which often stir things up and create drama. During the episode fans penned on X: 'Uk love island is so boring my goodness #LoveIsland.', 'None of the contestants on love island interest me, They are all boring tbh.', From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Despite new bombshells Remell and Shea entering on the instalment for a racy game of truth or dare, many at home were left noticing one major change in the series' first week 'Hopefully these bombshells change the dynamics of this boring villa #LoveIsland #LoveIslandUK.', 'love island uk is so boring.', 'You know a season of Love Island is boring when the ads are more exciting then the show #LoveIsland.', 'Love island needs to go back to the first 5 series of the show or it's going to fail.. it's getting to that point where it might just need a few years off. It's getting boring! #loveisland.', 'UK Love Island is sooooooooo boring convos are so dry i cant wait until USA releases #LoveIsland.' On the episode Ben and Toni clashed in the fallout from Sophie's brutal elimination from the villa as he 'got the ick'. The ITV2 dating show returned to our screens on Monday night, with presenter Maya Jama welcoming 12 new Islanders to Mallorca to find love. But the dating hopefuls were left shaken on last night's show, only the second episode of this series, as Sophie was dumped from the Island. It came after bombshell Toni entered the villa on Monday and stole Ben from Shakira, leaving her single and at risk of being sent home. During the episode fans penned on X: 'Uk love island is so boring my goodness #LoveIsland...' A day later, Maya asked any boy interested in her to stand up, one of whom Shakira would couple up with - and she chose Harry, leaving Sophie single and heading home. In Wednesday's episode, new couple Toni and Ben clashed over Sophie's brutal elimination - leaving Ben unsure about their budding romance. Chatting in a small group, Toni reflected that the next Islander to go might be one of the lads: 'Boys, it's your turn, just saying - I don't think you're gonna be safe.' Ben replied sharply: 'Are you saying me in particular?' The American bombshell shoots back, 'No, it's about boys, not everything is about you' - which saw an irritated Ben storm off. His extreme reaction left the other Islanders shocked, with Meg later saying to him: 'That was a bit much... I don't get what she said that was really offensive?' Ben explained: 'She said, "Not everything is about you..." I just got the ick.' He then confessed this to Shakira too - who told Toni what he has said and suggested she pull him for a chat about it. Toni does not need to be told twice, sitting Ben down to ask: 'I've heard from people you said I'm giving you the ick?'
