Pop star turned vicar shares his memories of a Scottish musical great

To paraphrase Joni Mitchell, the last time I saw Richard was Dundee in '87. He'd been appearing at the city's Caird Hall as one half of the synth-pop duo, The Communards. Now, minus the keyboards and Jimmy Somerville, he was back onstage performing in another grand Scottish auditorium. His Borderline National Trinket tour dangled the promise of an evening of anecdotes, gossip, wit and wisdom.
Reverend Richard Coles has pretty much (dog) collared the market in adorable vicars. 'We love you!' Someone yelled as he settled himself down on a barstool and prepared to take us with him on his journey from pop star to parson, broadcaster and best-selling author.
He's a skilled raconteur, a masterful spinner of yarns. Oh, and the gossip's good. Fancy spilling more tea, vicar? Don't mind if I do. Tales of his time on I'm A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! are met with a more muted response.
Jimmy Somerville and Richard Coles (Image: McKormack, Candia) 'You lot are probably too busy watching Antiques Roadshow,' he joked. A scan of the room suggests he could be right. This crowd are definitely more fans of Richard the Rev than Richard the former raver.
Memories of Jimmy Somerville hit the mark, though. Who knew the wee man was such a big fan of French enamel cookware? The story of Jimmy's mum, Annie and her pal, Chrissie, on board a cruise he'd paid for will stay with me for a long time. Jimmy's misbehaviour with a matador will too, but for very different reasons. The love and respect Richard feels for his former band mate is tangible.
Kettering, Cumbernauld, crime novels, religion, Strictly and the King of Norway all feature. The subject matter is as diverse as Richard's career path. The congregation are enthralled. He's preaching to the converted. Just call him The Sermonator.

It's a long show, though. Perhaps a tad too long. The second hour is devoted to a Q&A. Audience participation can be problematic, but I'm in full agreement with the bloke who jotted down, 'Why are we writing this show for you?'
The tour title comes from a comment made by Richard's late husband, David. After hearing someone at a party describing Richard as a national treasure, David had jokingly replied that he was more like a borderline national trinket.
Trinket or treasure, take your choice. There's a strong argument he could lay claim to both.

Billy Connolly speaks about Elton John's inspiration as he releases new artwork

The 82-year-old has released four new limited edition works under his Born On A Rainy Day series, via Castle Fine Art, recalling some of the fondest memories from his life. One of the pieces, named Saturday Night, shows a piano player in action, with Sir Billy saying the character in his piece 'does that leg thing which is pure Elton'. Speaking about opening for the Rocket Man singer in 1976, he added: 'It was that point of the show where he backheeled the stool and it tumbled off the stage. The roadies all dived so that it didn't break. 'I saw Elton lately and he was better than I've ever seen him. He's an amazing performer.' Sir Billy, who began drawing in 2007 and has built a name for himself as an artist since his retirement from comedy in 2018, has also released Sausage Tree, which reflects on his childhood, Sunburned, which depicts a sunburned Scottish man, and Fly Away Peter, which shows a multicoloured figure surrounded by birds. The Glasgow-born star added: 'It's taken me years to call my art beautiful, I would never dream of saying it before for the chance that somebody would say, 'it's crap, you're no good', but I'm quite good. 'I can make people smile and feel happy. It's great.' Earlier this month, Sir Billy warned fans about scammers impersonating him online, telling them he and his wife, Pamela Stephenson, had been impersonated using artificial intelligence. He said scammers had been 'impersonating me, often reaching out to fans soliciting direct messaging', adding there 'could well be criminal intent'. Sir Billy has continued to record TV programmes since his retirement, with his most recent projects including shows such as 2018's Billy Connolly: Made In Scotland, Billy Connolly's Great American Trail in 2019, and Billy Connolly Does…, which began airing in 2022. The new pieces are available from Castle Fine Art from 8am on Friday.

Emmerdale star Lisa Riley 'in talks' to join I'm A Celebrity 2025 line up

Lisa Riley's name is being dropped into the mix as one of the possible contenders for this year's series of I'm A Celebrity. A soap star traditionally takes part in the show every year Emmerdale favourite Lisa Riley is being lined up to swap the Dales for the Australian jungle later this year, with reports suggesting she is in advanced talks to take part in the next series of I'm A Celebrity. ‌ Riley, 49, is best known for playing Mandy Dingle in the ITV soap, which is a role that she first took on in 1995. Over the last three decades she has been at the heart of some of Emmerdale 's most dramatic storylines and won the hearts of viewers. ‌ While she left the soap in 2001 to pursue other projects including Fat Friends, Waterloo Road, and Loose Women, she made a triumphant return to Emmerdale in 2019. ‌ Now, producers of I'm A Celebrity are said to be eyeing her up as one of the first names for the 2025 series. A TV insider told The Sun: "Lisa is the perfect celebrity for the show because not only is she from a soap watched by millions she's one of its biggest characters and it's an ITV show to boot. "She also has a naughty, mischievous sense of humour which is guaranteed to get a big response from her other celebrity campmates during their time in the jungle. Lisa is by no means the first star from Emmerdale to have gone on I'm a Celebrity and those that do always tend to get a great response from viewers at home." ‌ So far, eight Emmerdale stars have entered the jungle since the show launched in 2002, including Lucy Pargeter, Adam Thomas and Gemma Atkinson. Former cast member Danny Miller even went on to win the show in 2021. Riley herself has expressed an interest in taking part in the reality show for a while now. Earlier this year, she said: "I'm A something I would do before I turned 50 as a test for myself." However, she admitted to having some concerns over the more daunting trials, confessing that she could handle eating challenges but adding: "I could never ever do the mice and the rat box." ‌ Her potential signing would follow the tradition of soap stars taking part in the ITV jungle hit. Coronation Street actors have been regulars on the series alongside Emmerdale alumni. Antony Cotton competed in 2011, while Helen Flanagan became infamous in 2012 for being voted to face seven consecutive Bushtucker Trials. Most recently, Jennie McAlpine (Fiz Dobbs) entered the jungle in 2017. Speculation is also currently mounting that Corrie star Adam Hussain could join the 2025 line-up after quitting the cobbles earlier this year. The Mirror have contacted ITV for comment. Meanwhile, when it comes to life in the Dales, soap fans are worried that Riley's character Mandy Dingle might be in danger, as the actress recently posted a photo from the set of Emmerdale featuring a body double. One fan expressed their concerns on social media, writing: "Not good if there's a stunt woman, it means Mandy is in trouble."
