Why Tick Season Is So Bad This Year and What You Can Do to Protect Yourself

Health officials report an increasing number of tick bites across the United States as the regions where the insects typically breed have expanded.
Experts cite climate change as a major factor in the rise and spread of tick populations and the diseases they carry.
Infected ticks can transmit Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and other illnesses by biting humans.
You can reduce your risk of tick bites by wearing clothes that cover your arms and legs and checking yourself and your pets for ticks after outdoor activities.
Ticks are being found in more places in the United States, which means the risk of Lyme disease and other tick-related illnesses is also on the rise.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports the highest rate of tick bites in more than five years.
According to the CDC, there were 74 tick bites per 100,000 emergency room visits in the United States in July, the highest rate for this month since 2017.
That rate reached a high of 134 tick bites per 100,000 emergency room visits in May, the highest for that month since 2019.
Tick bites are especially prevalent in the Northeast region of the country. The CDC has recorded 127 such bites per 100,000 emergency room visits in that region so far this year. That area hit a high of 283 bites per 100,000 visits in May.
The next most prone area is the Midwest, with 85 bites per 100,000 emergency visits. The Southeast sector has a rate of 35 bites per 100,000 visits, while the West has 16 bites per 100,000 and the South-Central area has 10 bites per 100,000.
'Over the past 20 years, tick habitats have been expanding gradually in the United States, William Schaffner, MD, an infectious disease expert and professor of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee, told Healthline. 'Since tick bites can spread certain infectious diseases, the geographic areas impacted by these infections has expanded along with the ticks.'
'Doctors have had to become more aware of these tick-transmitted infections and the general public needs to become mindful of how to prevent tick bites when they go out into nature,' he added.
Why are ticks becoming more common?
Durland Fish, PhD, the chief executive officer of the American Lyme Disease Foundation, said that the deer tick, which transmits Lyme Disease, has expanded its range to 16 northern states during the past 50 years.
Fish, who is also a professor emeritus of epidemiology at the Yale School of Public Health in Connecticut, said the expansion of this particular tick is due to the reintroduction of the deer into regenerated forest regions.
'The deer tick is completely dependent upon white-tailed deer for reproduction. No deer, no deer ticks. No ticks, no tick-borne diseases,' he told Healthline.
Fish noted that the lone star tick, which carries ehrlichiosis, has been increasing its range northward over the past several decades. He said land use is the primary reason.
'Suburbanization has resulted in more human contact with ticks as people moved into suburban forested areas and deer hunting was restricted for safety,' he explained.
Fish added that the range of the dog tick vector of Rocky Mountain spotted fever has been relatively stable.
Still, experts say climate change is a major factor in the increase and spread of ticks and tick-borne diseases.
Amanda Roome, an associate director of the Tick-borne Disease Center and former graduate student at Binghamton University in New York, said in a report published by the university that warmer temperatures caused by climate change are allowing ticks to thrive.
Schaffner agreed. 'The expanded tick territory has resulted from climate changes, which has made some previously cooler areas now warmer, creating a more congenial habitat in which ticks can thrive,' he said. 'Also, winters have been shorter and less severe, giving ticks the opportunity to be active longer.'
What diseases are transmitted by ticks?
Different types of ticks live in different regions. According to the CDC, while there are many different tick species found around the world, only a handful bite and transmit bacteria, viruses, and parasites (pathogens) that cause diseases in humans.
The CDC notes that a specific tick species found in a U.S. region does not always mean it will transmit a specific disease in that area. Multiple factors affect the transmission of tick-borne disease and illness.
Two of the most common tick-borne diseases are Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
'Lyme infection can produce a variety of symptoms, most prominently chronic joint pains,' said Schaffner. 'Rocky Mountain spotted fever is an acute illness with high fever and a rash. Both these infections can be treated with antibiotics and supportive care when diagnosed promptly.'
What to know about Lyme disease
The CDC estimates that about 476,000 people are diagnosed and treated for Lyme disease each year in the United States.
Lyme disease was first recognized in 1975 in the town of Old Lyme, Connecticut.
It's an infectious disease caused by bacteria carried by black-legged ticks, also known as deer ticks.
The ticks contract the bacteria after feeding on infected animals such as deer, mice, and birds. They transmit the bacteria to people by biting them.
Lyme disease can develop in humans in as early as one day to as long as several years.
One of the earliest – and most common – symptom of Lyme disease is a bull's-eye rash, also known as an erythema migrans.
Other early symptoms include:
chills
fever
enlarged lymph nodes
sore throat
vision changes
fatigue
muscle aches or headache
Symptoms for later-stage Lyme disease can range from abnormal heart rhythm to numbness to meningitis.
Treatment for early localized Lyme disease is a 10-to-14-day course of oral antibiotics.
Medications used to treat the disease include:
doxycycline
amoxicillin
cefuroxime
Later-stage Lyme disease can affect the circulatory or central nervous systems and even cause joint damage in its most serious forms, and may require up to 28 days of treatment with antibiotics.
There is current research and clinical trials looking into the possibility of a vaccine to help prevent Lyme disease.
How to prevent tick bites
There are a number of simple, practical ways to help reduce your risk of getting bitten by a tick.
Roome has a varied list of suggestions. Among them:
Cover up: Wear long-sleeved pants and shirts.
Check yourself: Be sure to examine your clothing and skin for ticks after a walk in the woods or any other natural space.
Lighten up: It's easier to spot ticks on lighter-colored clothes than darker-colored clothes.
Spray your clothes: Apply the synthetic insecticide permethrin to the outside of your clothes.
Use DEET: Studies are inconclusive, but Roome said it can't hurt to use DEET – even if it just protects you from mosquitoes.
Stay on designated paths: Ticks are mostly found in bushes, branches, and undergrowth, so hike in the middle of a path.
Check your pets: A tick can 'ride home' with a dog or other animal, so check your pets for ticks in the field and at home.
Roll them off: Use a lint roller (the kind with sticky paper) on yourself and your pets. The ticks will stick to the roller instead of you.
Dry your clothes: Ticks can actually survive the washing machine, but they can't live through a cycle in the dryer.
Fish, however, believes the most effective prevention method starts with the deer population.
'Prevention efforts should target deer,' he said. 'There is research underway to treat deer that will kill ticks with an oral bait, but it is grossly underfunded in favor of human vaccines promoted by the pharmaceutical industry.'
Schaffer notes you don't have to be in the great outdoors to get bitten by a tick.
'You do not have to hike in the woods to acquire ticks,' he said. 'You can encounter ticks in your backyard if you are clearing underbrush, which is how I acquired a couple of ticks a few years ago, so take precautions even close to home.'
'One study showed that golfers who chased their errant shots into brushy areas were more likely to pick up ticks along with their golf balls,' he added.
He also urged caution when removing a tick from your skin.
'If you find an attached tick, carefully remove it,' he said. 'The best way is to use a tissue, grasp the tick firmly as close to the skin as possible and then gently pull it out. Do not pull with a sudden jerk as that may leave the tick's head embedded in your skin.'

Infections are rare, but a person can get sick by swimming in the ocean with an open wound or by eating contaminated raw shellfish. Health officials in several states are alerting residents about a flesh-eating bacteria that thrives in warm coastal waters. Approximately 60 cases of Vibrio vulnificus have been confirmed in 11 states, according to Today. The highest numbers have been in Louisiana (17 cases, including 4 deaths) and Florida (16 cases, including 5 deaths). North Carolina has also seen 7 cases, Yahoo News confirmed with the state's Department of Health and Human Services via email. Vibrio vulnificus cases are considered rare, with between 150 and 200 infections reported in the U.S. each year, according to the Cleveland Clinic. However, many people with an infection can become seriously ill, requiring intensive care or limb amputation. 'About 1 in 5 people with this infection die, sometimes within a day or two of becoming ill,' according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Does this mean you should avoid the ocean altogether? Here's what to know and what safety measures to keep in mind: What is Vibrio vulnificus? Vibrio are a type of bacteria that thrive in warm coastal waters during the summer months from May to October. This includes salt water and brackish water, which is a mixture of salt and freshwater often found where rivers meet the ocean. The bacteria are found particularly along the Gulf Coast states like Florida, Louisiana, Texas, Alabama and Mississippi. There are different kinds of Vibrio that can lead to various infections. Vibrio vulnificus can be particularly dangerous because it can cause severe and life-threatening infections. This specific type of bacteria is known as 'flesh-eating' because it can destroy muscle tissue and skin. 'Many people with [Vibrio] vulnificus wound infection require intensive care or surgical tissue removal,' the CDC says. How do people get infected? There are two ways that people can get infected: When a person's open wound is exposed to ocean water or seafood contaminated with Vibrio bacteria. A small cut, scrape or wound from a recent surgery, piercing or tattoo can allow bacteria in. This can happen when a person goes swimming or fishing or prepares raw seafood. When someone eats raw or undercooked seafood or ingests contaminated water while swimming. Oysters, in particular, can concentrate the Vibrio bacteria inside them. What are the symptoms of a Vibrio infection? Are some people more at risk of an infection? Anyone can become infected with the bacteria through a wound. People with underlying health conditions like liver disease, diabetes and immunocompromising conditions are at higher risk for wound infection, according to the CDC. How can people stay safe? Florida's Health Department and the CDC provide some tips to prevent Vibrio vulnificus infections: Don't eat raw oysters and other raw shellfish. Instead, cook them thoroughly. Avoid cross contamination with raw seafood and other cooked food or shellfish. If you have an open wound or broken skin, avoid warm salt or brackish water, if possible. Cover your wound with a waterproof bandage if it could come into contact with coastal water, raw seafood or its drippings or juices. Wear protective gloves or clothing when handling raw shellfish. Be vigilant after coastal floods, hurricanes and storm surges. Coastal waters forced into inland areas increase the risk for Vibrio wound infections, particularly for people who are older or who have underlying health conditions.

Family sues for wrongful death in deadly listeria outbreak

A California family is suing for wrongful death in the wake of a listeria outbreak caused by nutrition shakes that led to the deaths of 14 people this year, including their relative. In February, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced an investigation into an outbreak linked to Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial brand frozen supplemental shakes. At the time, Lyon Magnus LLC, the parent company, recalled 17 affected products. The contaminated shakes, distributed to long-term care facilities and hospitals, were produced by a Prairie Farms Dairy Inc. facility in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The FDA and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) declared the outbreak over on May 16. The agency reported 42 cases of listeriosis, or listeria poisoning, across 21 states, resulting in 41 hospitalizations and 14 deaths. The illnesses and deaths, which overwhelmingly (90%) occurred in people in care facilities or those who had been hospitalized before they became infected, were confirmed through whole genome sequencing as being caused by the outbreak strain associated with the shakes. Wrongful death suit alleges man died of listerosis complications The CDC began monitoring the outbreak of the disease as early as 2018, food safety lawyer Bill Marler told USA TODAY. At the beginning, epidemiologists were unable to identify the source of the illnesses. Now, with the outbreak technically over, some families are just beginning to find out their loved ones were victims, Marler said. Marler of the Marler Clark law firm said he's filed the first lawsuit related to the outbreak on Thursday, Aug. 7. It says the outbreak spanned multiple years and was likely the result of conditions within one of the manufacturing and packaging facilities. Marler said that the family who sued was not informed until July that their relative's death was caused by the outbreak. The wife and children of John Wills Sr. of Richmond, California, sued Lyon, the distributor of the shakes, and Prairie Farms Dairy Inc., the manufacturer. Their suit said Wills was recovering from a slip-and-fall injury in a local care facility when, on July 20, 2024, he was given a contaminated shake. Wills, who was previously able to move with the assistance of a mobility device, to participate in physical therapy and eat meals normally, soon developed a fever, pain and had difficulty speaking, according to the suit. After multiple hospitalizations and monitoring for infectious disease, Wills died of "complications related to his Listeria infection and other comorbid conditions" on Feb. 22, 2025. His relatives are seeking damages and payment of Wills' medical and legal fees. Marler criticized the CDC and FDA for their reporting practices, telling USA TODAY and explaining in a blog post that victims like Wills underwent various tests – including blood and spinal fluid draws – and underwent investigations that involved family interviews and reviews of purchase histories. However, they were never informed by the agencies about the cause of their illness or death. "I spoke with a family today to inform them that their husband/father died after suffering a Listeria infection," Marler said in a recent blog post shared with USA TODAY, which he confirmed was referencing Wills. "Until today, the family did not know the cause of his infection despite (the) fact that it has been known by local, state and federal officials for over a year." USA TODAY has reached out to the CDC and FDA for comment. Which states had listeria poisoning cases? A total of 21 states had known listeria outbreaks related to this recall: Alabama, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and West Virginia. The 14 deaths occurred in nine states: California, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, New York, Tennessee, Texas, and Washington. Which Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial shakes were recalled? All recalled products had "best buy" dates between 02/21/25 and 02/21/26, according to Lyons Magnus. All the contaminated products are believed to have been destroyed, the FDA notice said. What is listeriosis or listeria poisoning? Listeriosis, or listeria poisoning, is a foodborne bacterial infection most commonly caused by the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. It is considered a serious condition and can be dangerous or life-threatening, especially to older adults, people with weak immune systems and pregnant people. Signs and symptoms of listeriosis may not appear until weeks after consumption. Persons in the higher-risk categories who experience flu-like symptoms within two months after eating contaminated food should seek medical care and tell their health care provider about eating the contaminated food, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Parents in the United States who want to vaccinate their young children against Covid-19 may face a growing set of challenges this fall. The US Food and Drug Administration might not renew authorization for Pfizer's Covid-19 vaccine for children younger than 5, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told state and local health officials on Friday. 'This decision would affect Pfizer's pediatric COVID-19 vaccine for children aged 6m–4y for the 2025–2026 season,' the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases said in an email that was obtained by CNN. In May, US Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced that the CDC would no longer recommend Covid-19 vaccines for healthy children or pregnant women. The CDC's immunization schedule was updated to reflect that children would be able to get the vaccines after consulting with a health care provider — what's known as 'shared decision-making.' But without FDA authorization, Pfizer's Covid-19 vaccine would no longer be available to any children younger than 5 and the other option available for healthy children with no underlying conditions in this age group, Moderna's Covid-19 vaccine, would have to be given 'off label' by a willing pharmacist or physician. This contradicts the intent of shared clinical decision-making, said Dr. Paul Offit, a pediatrician and director of the Vaccine Education Center at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. 'Shared clinical decision-making assumes that you're making a decision for that child whether they're healthy or not healthy. So now it's confusing,' he said. Covid-19 vaccines first became available to the American public during the pandemic under emergency use authorization, known as EUA — special permissions used by the FDA during an emergency that are short of full approval. Pfizer has had full FDA approval for its Covid-19 vaccine for individuals age 12 and older since 2022. The company anticipates that this approval will expand to children ages 5 to 11 for the upcoming respiratory virus season, according to the email that the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases sent to state and local health officials on Friday. But vaccine access for the youngest children, who are most vulnerable to severe illness from a Covid-19 infection, would be significantly more limited if the FDA does not renew emergency authorization for the Pfizer vaccine for children under 5. Pfizer confirmed to CNN that the FDA has said that it may not renew the emergency use authorization or the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine for children ages 6 months to 4 years. 'We are currently in discussions with the agency on potential paths forward and have requested that the EUA for this age group remain in place for the 2025-2026 season,' Pfizer said in a statement. 'It is important to note that these deliberations are not related to the safety and efficacy of the vaccine which continues to demonstrate a favorable profile.' Fatima Khan, co-founder of the nonprofit grassroots group Protect Their Future, which advocates for vaccine access for kids, told CNN in a statement, that 'taking a proven, safe and effective vaccine away from vulnerable children is unconscionable.' 'The science is clear: Infants face Covid-19 hospitalization rates comparable to those over 65. Refusing to authorize it for children under 5 doesn't protect them–it abandons them,' she said. 'Parents have already struggled to safeguard their youngest because of limited vaccine access. Now that protection may disappear entirely this fall just as schools reopen. If this stands, it will be a lasting stain on our public health system and on every leader who left our children behind.' Moderna also has a Covid-19 vaccine available for children age 11 and younger. It was granted full approval by the FDA in July but only for those who are at 'increased risk for COVID-19 disease.' Moderna plans to increase vaccine supply for children to 'help mitigate any potential supply gap,' according to the CDC email sent on Friday, but Moderna is still determining the specific volume and timing. Like flu vaccines, Covid-19 vaccines have typically been updated with formulations that best target the virus strains that are in circulation each season. But the FDA has not yet approved the formulation for the 2025-2026 season. 'I think the bottom line is that children are going to be less likely to get this vaccine, which goes against the data,' Offit said. At a meeting in April, the CDC's vaccine advisory committee heard evidence that children accounted for about 4% of all Covid-19 hospitalizations over last fall and winter's respiratory virus season. Rates of Covid-19 hospitalizations among children are highest for the youngest age groups, CDC data shows. Last respiratory virus season, there were 48 Covid-19 hospitalizations for every 100,000 children under 5 – nearly seven times the rate for older children and more than twice the rate for adults under 50. 'It's a war on mRNA vaccines. Why? Because mRNA vaccines are now political,' Offit said. 'It's just a war against the science, war against the data, and we will suffer this. And the thing that I fear the most is: Will we know we're suffering this? Will we have the surveillance capacity to know who's getting hospitalized with Covid, who's dying from Covid?' Covid-19 levels are on the rise in the US, with transmission increasing in at least 45 states, according to the CDC. In a statement to CNN, the US Department of Health and Human Services said that the agency does not comment on potential regulatory changes. 'The COVID-19 pandemic ended with the expiration of the federal public health emergency in May 2023,' spokesperson Andrew Nixon said in an email. 'Unless officially announced by HHS, discussion about future agency action should be regarded as pure speculation.'
