Norwich Jazz Festival returns after 20-year hiatus
A city-wide music festival is set to return in May after being on hiatus for 20 years.Norwich Jazz Festival, which first ran more than 40 years ago, has curated artists from around the world to perform in venues across the city.Headline acts include Brazilian jazz-funk legends Azymuth and Norwich-based trio Mammal Hands, who will perform alongside a number of UK rising stars.Bradley Glasspoole, the festival programmer, described how the event had been designed to showcase the "many facets" of jazz, in a way that was accessible to young people and families.
He said: "For some people, 'jazz' might be not for them because they might think it's too middle class or they might think they don't understand it and so forth, but this is very accessible."To encourage a younger audience to attend, people aged 25 and under will be able to purchase tickets to some performances at a reduced rate. One of which will be a show by the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, whose alumni include Amy Winehouse and Mark Armstrong.
Norwich first became home to the jazz festival in 1981, with events held intermittently until 2005. Gigs will be held in a range of venues across Norwich, including Norwich Arts Centre, Epic Studios and Cinema City.
Artists will take to the stage on Thursday, 15 May, with the festival drawing to a close on Saturday, 24 May.Additional acts are expected to be announced as part of the line-up in the coming weeks.

When we got the email to tell us, it was just amazing. I'd never even thought about playing there. The fact that it's next door to Oasis playing at Murrayfield Stadium is really surreal. It's huge, and just very surreal with what's happening next door when we are playing in the ice rink. I used to love ice skating, I got into it in Livingston and when that closed I started coming here to skate also. I then got into music and going out, so the ice skating faded away. We've played to bigger crowds at festivals and big arenas, but this is incredible and the most excited we've been about playing a gig. We knew there was a demand to hear Oasis songs live given they split in 2009, but we didn't realise how big it was. The band were gone but the fans weren't, and they were still mad for it! We only played local gigs to start with, before we knew it we were all over the country and then the world. We absolutely love doing what we do for a job. We get in character on stage, with a bit of needle between our Liam and Noel, a bit of pantomime. Sometimes the egos take over on stage and we just get lost in the moment, forget we aren't actually Oasis! Acting is a big part of it, not just playing the tunes, but being them also. We are quite happy guys, so sometimes we have to remember to be a bit mean and moody on stage. When the intro of the first song kicks in, especially if it's a good crowd, it's a great buzz to keep the music alive. Sometimes the hairs on the back of our necks stand up. There are so many layers to it. The first thing is everyone in the band are huge Oasis fans, we get to play the tunes we grew up with. And we're in a great band with great musicians, we sound great. Playing in front of great and very appreciative fans, it's such a buzz, and we never get sick of it. Oasis were our band growing up, and still are. They mean so much to us. Even since they announced their return the demand is still there for us to play. Everyone is so excited Oasis are back. It's amazing they are back, biblical. But when Noel had his divorce I really thought for the first time that it could happen, and here we are. We are so excited to see the set lists when they kick-off the reunion tour next month. And they have done really well to keep the media blanket since the announcement. I hope there is a wee spark between them on stage. I hope they show passion. It would be nice to see some brotherly love, and it's not just a big pay day. The tribute act spoke of their love for Oasis and revealed their excitement at playing these special Edinburgh gigs. | National World We were always busy, but since the reunion news broke last year the bookings have went through the roof. We are playing constantly this year and probably next year as well. It's great that Oasis have still got that pull, just like the Beatles really. We have not met Liam and Noel yet, but we met Oasis bassist Andy Bell once at an after-show. We would love to meet them, not sure what we would say though. They are the reason we are into music and musicians. We would just love to say thank you for teaching us music. Oasis changed everything when they came out, not just music, fashion, everything. It's hard to overestimate the impact they had on us and that generation. You never know, we might meet them at Murrayfield when we are both playing there? Harry and Meghan 'axe four key staff members' as 'another change' looms
Earlier this year, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle hired Meredith Maines as their new chief communication officer, and over the past few months their team has undergone some changes Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have reportedly axed four key staff members while revamping their team. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are said to have parted ways with their LA-based deputy press secretary Kyle Boulia and UK press officer Charlie Gipson. Both of them were hired in April 2024. Two other members of the couple's private team have reportedly also left in recent weeks. The changes come after Harry and Meghan appointed a new team, headed by chief communication officer (CCO) Meredith Maines, earlier this year. Meredith confirmed her team is now made up of eight people working across five different time zones. Harry and Meghan also recently hired Emily Robinson, who previously oversaw global publicity for The Crown from seasons three to six, as their new director of communications. Season six of the hit Netflix drama programme aired controversial storylines which included Prince Harry wearing Nazi fancy dress, Princess Diana's Panorama interview, and scenes depicting Diana as a ghost speaking to Queen Elizabeth II. A source has now claimed more changes could be in the works for the couple, who stepped down as senior royals in 2020 and now live in California with their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. The source told Hello! Magazine: "Something tells me there will be another change in the future. Meghan and Harry have hired some of the most incredible people at the top of their fields, yet somehow none of them ever work out." Following reports of changes within the Sussexes' team, their CCO Meredith said in a statement shared with The Mirror: "As the Duke and Duchess's business and philanthropic interests grow, I have made the strategic decision to move toward a more traditional communications structure of specialist agency support, as previously reported in Forbes and PR Week several weeks ago. Transitioning from a team of two to an agency support staff of eight, operating across five different time zones, will give international media and stakeholders better access, and critically, faster response times to inquiries." Earlier this week we reported that Meghan was due to attend a charity event in Los Angeles tomorrow, but t he bash has been cancelled due to ongoing unrest in the city. The Duchess was scheduled to be the guest of honour at the Museum of Natural History in LA, where she was expected to give a speech about her extensive charity work. However, as the streets of LA continue to be occupied by protestors facing off against ICE officers, organisers postponed the black-tie Night of Wonder event. Dr. Lori Bettison-Varga, President and Director of the Natural History Museum in LA, said in a statement: "As an institution 'of, for, and with Los Angeles,' our responsibility during challenging times is clear: to serve as a community resource focused on healing and unity, not celebration." "Los Angeles needs us to channel our energy toward supporting our neighbours and demonstrating the values that make our city and county strong," her statement continued. The statement went on to clarify that the decision to indefinitely postpone the event was made by the museum's Board of Trustees, leadership and event partners, who "unanimously agreed" that pausing the event was "the appropriate response to current community circumstances." Chief Advancement Officer Paul Bessire added: "We will find a future moment to celebrate our work. Until then, we will channel our energy towards being welcoming spaces for learning and discovery for everyone who walks through our doors." The museum is expected to reschedule the event for a later date, and will continue with their daily operations and educational programs until the event is back in the calendar.
