is preparing to launch over 150 capsules containing cremated human remains and DNA samples into low Earth orbit on June 23. The launch is part of the Transporter 14 rideshare mission and features a collaboration between Houston-based space burial company Celestis and European spacecraft firm The Exploration Company (TEC). Dubbed the Perseverance Flight, the symbolic journey allows families from around the world to send loved ones, or a piece of themselves, into space, either in memoriam or as a legacy of cosmic curiosity. This unique mission will orbit Earth before reentering and splashing down in the Pacific Ocean.

Celestis has previously flown the remains and DNA of celebrities, pets, and even historical icons. Past missions have included symbolic remains of U.S. presidents like George Washington and John F. Kennedy, as well as Star Trek legends such as Gene Roddenberry and Nichelle Nichols. This time, among the participants is 3-year-old Matteo Barth, who will become the youngest European to send DNA into space, symbolically joining his late grandfather, a space enthusiast.
How the mission works
The memorial capsules will be housed inside TEC's Mission Possible spacecraft, which will launch atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. After reaching orbit, the capsule will complete two or three circuits around Earth before reentry. The payload will then splash down in the Pacific, where recovery teams will retrieve it and return the capsules to families as space-flown mementoes.

For many, sending DNA or ashes into space offers a meaningful, personalised way to honour someone who loved science, exploration, or the cosmos. Others see it as a way to symbolically become part of humanity's spacefaring future. This is TEC's second demonstration mission before the debut of its Nyx Earth orbital vehicle, planned to dock with the ISS by 2028. But during migration, their diet can shift to include toxic plants like hemlock. When that happens, the birds may carry harmful compounds in their bodies. Eating them in this state can lead to a rare but dangerous condition called coturnism, known to affect muscles and kidneys. Little Shrikethrush Small, brown, and fairly plain-looking, the little shrikethrush wouldn't strike anyone as dangerous. Yet, it contains batrachotoxins– the same type found in poisonous frogs. Northern Variable Pitohui Closely related to the hooded pitohui, this bird doesn't have a consistent level of poison. Some of them are more toxic than others, depending on their environment and diet. The colour of their feathers often hints at how dangerous they are– the brighter ones tend to be more toxic. Red Warbler Found in the highlands of Mexico, the red warbler stands out for its vivid colour. According to online sources, while it hasn't been studied as thoroughly as some of the other birds on this list, early findings suggest it may carry toxic compounds.

Feeling Lightheaded, Excited About Next 14 Days: Shubhanshu Shukla From ISS
New Delhi: Indian Air Force (IAF) Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla said he is excited about the scientific tasks that he and the crew will perform for the next 14 days in the International Space Station (ISS). He said he is feeling a bit "lightheaded" but "that is nothing compared to the excitement". It was the first time the entire team spoke together since Group Captain Shukla and three other astronauts successfully docked their Dragon spacecraft with the ISS this evening. Visuals beamed from the ISS showed the four astronauts who had just arrived enjoying a healthy drink and laughing. "I am feeling lightheaded," the IAF pilot-turned-astronaut said. "But that is not much of an issue compared to the things we will do here for the next 14 days. It is a very proud and exciting moment, a big step in our space journey," Group Captain Shukla said, flanked by the ISS crew and the three astronauts who came with him - Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski of Poland, Tibor Kapu of Hungary, and Dr Peggy Whitson of the US. He reiterated what he said earlier about the tricolour (national flag). "I wear the tricolour on my shoulders with pride." Group Captain Shukla's family along with friends and relatives gathered at the school in Lucknow where he studied and watched the live telecast of the space capsule Dragon's successful docking at the ISS. The capsule which is part of the Axiom 4 mission is the fifth and final Dragon in Elon Musk-owned company SpaceX fleet. It was christened "Grace" after reaching orbit. Asha Shukla, the mother of IAF Group Captain, was seen tearing up as she watched the live telecast of the docking in the ISS.
