
Increasing Weather Risks Demand A Longer View Of The Forecast
With the rapid advancement of AI-powered forecasting models like NVIDIA FourCastNet, which can generate a weeklong forecast in less than two seconds, decision-makers are now leaning on weather outlooks up to 14 days in advance. This shift isn't about trying to predict the unpredictable. It's about managing risk in a world where the cost of being unprepared has skyrocketed. From supply chain disruptions and staffing limitations to the growing intensity of weather events, the modern operational landscape has created a new dependency on long-range weather intelligence. But this change also introduces new challenges, as longer-range forecasts inherently carry more uncertainty. So how do stakeholders strike the right balance?
One of the most immediate drivers is staffing and labor constraints. With widespread shortages across aviation, utilities, logistics and public works, many organizations are forced to finalize staffing schedules farther in advance. Waiting until a short-term forecast achieves higher confidence can be too late to mobilize a full response.
Global supply chains and logistics dependencies add further complexity. Moving equipment, materials or personnel often requires significant lead time. For instance, utility companies may need to stage storm response crews across state lines or secure fuel for backup generators — actions that can't wait for last-minute confirmation.
At the same time, extreme weather events are becoming both more frequent and more costly. In the United States, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported 27 separate billion-dollar weather and climate disasters in 2024, marking the second-highest annual total on record. With rising volatility and intensity of these storms, the margin for error is shrinking. Even a low-confidence signal in a long-range forecast may now justify activating initial response plans.
Finally, there's the human factor. Social media and public scrutiny have raised expectations for early, proactive communication. Municipal leaders and business owners face reputational risks if they appear unprepared, especially in the aftermath of a disruptive storm.
The good news is that long-range forecasts are far more accurate and useful today than they were even a decade or two ago. A 7-day forecast today is roughly 25% more accurate than it was in 2000, and a 10-day forecast is about 45% more accurate, according to ECMWF data verification data. These gains mean that forecasts once considered speculative now offer enough reliability to guide real-world planning and risk mitigation.
To meet these evolving demands, many organizations are turning to advanced decision support systems rather than relying on consumer-grade forecasts. These platforms integrate long-range model data, expert meteorologist interpretation and tailored insights specific to each operation's needs.
In aviation, for example, some airports partner with specialized weather services that provide 10–15 day trend analysis for snow, wind or thunderstorms. This allows teams to preposition deicing equipment or adjust runway maintenance schedules well in advance. Similarly, utility companies rely on ensemble forecasts to assess the likelihood of high wind days, guiding mutual aid agreements and field crew rotations.
Even with the increases in accuracy, the core challenge of utilizing long-range forecasting is the trade-off between early decisions and uncertain data. Yet many critical decisions must be made well before that window closes.
This forces organizations to operate in a gray area, weighing probabilities and trends rather than waiting for definitive outcomes. Consider an outdoor event planner who sees a signal for heavy rain nine days out. Canceling too early could lead to unnecessary financial losses and disappointed attendees. Waiting too long may compromise safety. In these cases, the decision is less about exact rainfall totals and more about risk tolerance, contingency options and operational flexibility.
Organizations that excel in this space don't wait for certainty. Instead, they treat long-range forecasts as planning tools to build flexible, tiered response plans. This might include staging resources, briefing internal teams, or outlining thresholds for escalation if the threat persists. The key is embracing uncertainty as part of the process, not a barrier to action.
Long-range forecasting will only grow in importance as weather becomes more extreme and operational flexibility more constrained. But this evolution isn't only about advancing scientific capability, it's also about reshaping how organizations use forecasts.
Meteorologists are increasingly taking on the role of risk communicators, helping decision-makers interpret long-range signals through the lens of operational impact. The key question is no longer around how many inches it will rain, but rather if the rain amount exceeds a threshold that requires action. Similarly, it's not just about predicting wind, but understanding whether gusts could damage infrastructure or tents, and how much lead time is needed to adjust staffing, relocate assets or modify logistics.
Looking ahead, more organizations may adopt scenario-based planning, where forecast guidance informs a range of actions depending on confidence levels. This approach helps break free from the binary trap of 'go/no-go' decisions and supports a more flexible strategy — one that aligns with how modern weather risks are unfolding.
In a world of growing complexity, organizations must plan further ahead, even if the view is a little fuzzier. By embracing probabilistic thinking, investing in customized weather intelligence and building operational agility, businesses and communities can stay one step ahead of what's coming. In high stakes situations with little time to spare, acting early even if imperfect is usually better than waiting too long.

Alaska man sentenced to one year in prison over illegal transport of crab to Washington

(Photo provided by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Police) A Kodiak fisher has been sentenced to spend a year in jail for illegally shipping thousands of pounds of tanner crab, much of it infected with a parasitic disease, out of Alaska to Washington state, federal officials said. The fisherman, Corey Potter, was also sentenced to two years' supervised release following his jail term, during which he will be barred from commercial fishing anywhere in the world, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said. The investigation was led by NOAA Fisheries' Office of Law Enforcement. The sentence was imposed on May 13 by U.S. District Court Judge Timothy Burgess in Anchorage. The case concerns tanner and Golden king crab harvested in 2024 in Southeast Alaska. Potter owned two vessels, one of them captained by his son, Kyle Potter, and the other by employee Justin Welch. Rather than unload the crab catch in Alaska, as is required by state law, the three men kept the live crab in the vessels and took the catch to Washington state, passing through Canadian waters along the way. The motivation was to fetch higher prices for their catch, according to prosecutors' documents. At the time, according to evidence presented in court documents, the men knew that a large proportion of the catch was infested with Bitter Crab Syndrome, a parasitic disease that usually kills the crabs and renders their meat inedible. Bitter Crab Syndrome is not toxic for people, but infected crab meat can be bitter and eating it is likened to chewing on aspirin. That evidence included text messages from other Alaska fishers who cautioned Potter and his son against bringing infested crab to market, with one expressing concerns that their actions would hurt the reputation and marketability of all Alaska crab. Bitter Crab Syndrome affects numerous species, and it is considered a possible contributor to the crash of Bering Sea snow crab and king crab stocks that led to an unprecedented string of harvest closures between 2021 and 2024. The main reason for the stock crashes, scientists believe, was the warmth in the habitat, which led to crab starvation. In the years leading up to the fishery closures, however, there was an increase in Bitter Crab Syndrome. The disease is linked to warming waters and climate change, according to scientists from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Kyle Potter and Welch pleaded guilty last year. In October, Kyle Potter was sentenced to five years' probation and ordered to pay a $20,000 fine; Welch was sentenced to three years' probation and ordered to pay a $10,000 fine. Ultimately, the loads of crab they delivered never made it to any market. They were seized by Washington state law enforcement officers and deemed unfit for sale or consumption. Of the Golden king crab, 42% of the catch was dead upon arrival; of the tanner crab, so much was infested that the entire load was disposed of in a landfill, federal officials said. Potter pleaded guilty in February to two counts of violating the Lacey Act, the federal law that concerns transport of wildlife and fish across state lines. Prosecutors identified him as the leader of the scheme and therefore requested heavier penalties. Potter, in a presentencing memorandum, asked for probation rather than jail time, arguing that his long career of fishing in Alaska has now ended and that at the age of 64, he is now financially ruined. 'As a result of last year's terrible crabbing season, which included the instant offense conduct, he has been financially destroyed. One of the boats involved in this offense was foreclosed on, and the other is believed to have been seized by the state. He has been reduced to relying upon family for assistance and has no viable means to support himself,' the May 6 defense memo said. But prosecutors, who argued for 18 months imprisonment, said actions with the diseased crab fit Potter's yearslong pattern of sloppy maintenance and unsafe behavior. In their presentencing report, also filed on May 6, prosecutors listed numerous past problems with the vessels Potter owned. They have been cited for chronically leaking oil, broken down at sea – requiring crew members to be rescued – and sunk in different sites, the report said. 'The defendant's track record as a vessel operator in Alaska is abysmal. He has shown a total disregard for the safety of his crew, the safety of Alaskan waterways, and the health of the marine environment,' the prosecutors' presentencing report said. Yet to be determined is the amount of restitution that Potter will be ordered to pay for the trafficked crab. The government is seeking $187,187 in restitution. A hearing on that subject is set for July 15. ‘From about 11 hours to around 2 minutes': Dominion Energy $50 billion plan reduces outage times ahead of hurricane season
(WAVY) — The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is predicting at least six hurricanes and at least three major hurricanes in the Atlantic Basin in 2025. It's a prediction that has NOAA officials urging people to plan ahead. The National Weather Service reported around 200,000 Virginian's lost power in this past February's winter storm. They add some people were without power as long as five days. Virginia-based Dominion Energy, seeing the rise in demand, is sharing their $50 billion initiative to keep the power on. 'There's a five-year capital plan that stands at about $50 billion, and about $27 billion of that is directly related to upgrades to the grid to help modernize it,' explained Cherise Newsome, a Dominion spokeswoman. 'We're headed into hurricane season and extreme weather can cause power outages. We want to reduce and prevent the power outages as best as possible and that's where grid modernization comes in.' Hardening the grid looks different depending on where customers live. Some who live in areas where power lines are vulnerable to being brought down are seeing those lines move underground. 'Our goal in the strategic underground program is to bury about 4000 miles of power lines,' said Newsome. 'So far, we've buried about 2500 miles of power lines. That represents about 13% of our power lines. What that does is reduce the elements that those power lines are exposed to. It's been able to reduce outage times from about 11 hours to around 2 minutes.' Additionally, for power lines in less vulnerable areas, Dominion Energy has upgraded the installation and size of power poles. 'We have a grid hardening program which uses taller poles rooted more deeply in the ground so that they can better withstand the elements of extreme weather conditions like thunderstorms and lightning,' Newsome said. Insurers brace for impact as NOAA predicts above-average hurricane season
Government scientists on Thursday released a forecast for the 2025 hurricane season, predicting a 60% chance it will be an above-average season. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, predicts this season will bring 13 to 19 named storms with winds 39 miles per hour or higher. It predicts six to 10 of the forecasted storms will grow to hurricane status, and three to five will become major hurricanes. Laura Grimm, the acting administrator of the NOAA and a marine scientist, sidestepped specific questions about how budget cuts aimed at climate science would affect the organization's work and highlighted the vital work of the agency to help communities prepare and save lives. "Weather prediction, modeling and protecting human lives and property is our top priority. So we are fully staffed at the hurricane center, and we definitely are ready to go," Grimm said in a news conference held in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, to commemorate 20 years since Hurricane Katrina. Grimm also pointed out, thanks to improvements in the science and technology over the last 20 years, that NOAA's hurricane prediction was spot-on last year. Hurricanes Helene and Milton caused more than $37 billion in insured losses in 2024, according to a report from Aon. Despite those losses, the U.S. property casualty insurance industry saw its best underwriting performance since 2013, according to a report from the Insurance Information Institute and Milliman. But the report concludes that January's devastating wildfires in California and economic challenges related to tariffs could dampen the industry's results in 2025. Insurers and reinsurers are collectively facing more than $50 billion in losses from the Los Angeles wildfires. The Midwest has also suffered outbreaks of severe thunderstorms with damaging hail, wind and tornadoes this spring. The Storm Prediction Center had tallied 883 local tornado reports this year as of Monday, 35% higher than average for this time of year. Aon said the severe convective storms have caused an estimated $10 billion in insured losses in the first quarter. A storm over three days in May added another estimated $7 billion to insurers' tally. The last 10 years have averaged more than $33 billion annually in insured losses, a 90% increase from the previous decade. It's an existential threat to the insurance industry and its ability to provide affordable insurance to homeowners, according to Bill Clark CEO of Demex, a reinsurance analytics group. And the problem is getting worse, not better. "Reinsurance (insurance for insurance) costs for severe convective storm losses are at a 20-year high and, coupled with limited availability, it is leaving insurers hamstrung and unable to transfer most of their mounting losses, " Clark said in an email to CNBC. Whether hurricanes, wildfires or severe storms. Aon blames the skyrocketing losses on growing exposure, meaning more people are living where climate risks are higher and the cost of their homes, cars and all the stuff inside is more expensive. The insurance industry is working to push state and local efforts to build resiliency and improve mitigation efforts — meaning better building codes, public works projects that protect homes and properties, and tough standards on defensible spaces around buildings, for instance. The president of Jefferson County Parish, Cynthia Lee Sheng, pointed to all the efforts made in the 20 years since Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana, killing 1,392 people in 2005. The government overhauled levees, flood walls, and pumping stations. "It's estimated that $13 is saved for every $1 spent on mitigation efforts," Sheng said. "Hurricane Katrina also changed the face of disaster recovery. Key agencies have learned to work together to provide assistance, coordinate efforts and ensure efficient response."
