34 timber industry stakeholders benefit from log scaling course in Sibu

KUCHING (April 24): A total of 34 participants comprising log scalers, log pond supervisors, and timber industry stakeholders participated in a Log Scaling Course in Sibu organised by the Sarawak Forest Department (SFD) and STA Training Sdn Bhd (STAT), a training arm of the Sarawak Timber Association (STA).
This collaborative initiative aimed to enhance industry knowledge and skills in log measurement and scaling, thereby reinforcing sustainable forestry practices and accurate timber valuation, according to a joint statement by SFD and STA.
The three-day intensive training programme, which concluded today, was conducted by experienced trainers from SFD and STAT.
The course provided critical aspects of log scaling, covering measurement techniques, log tagging, identifying species, recording log details into log specification forms, and submitting applications to SFD for royalty assessment, as well as other log movement activities along the Sarawak Timber Chain of Custody in accordance with the Forests Ordinance, 2015 and associated requirements.
SFD director Datu Hamden Mohammad said the successful completion of this course reflected the commitment of all parties involved to enhance the skills, knowledge, and competencies of individuals in the forestry sector through targeted training.
'Accuracy in log scaling is essential to preventing under-declaration and safeguarding government revenue by eliminating potential leakage in log royalty collection,' he said in his welcoming speech, which was delivered by Sibu regional forest officer Ahmad Ashrin Mohammad Bohari.
He urged all participants to fully utilise this opportunity to acquire and enhance their knowledge and skills in log scaling.
During the training, the trainers imparted participants with necessary knowledge and skills on log scaling in both classroom settings and valuable on-site hands-on practice at the Collection and Distribution Centre (CDC) LPF0025, Mile 68, Jalan Sibu-Selangau.
Participants were taught accurate measurement of log dimensions, including volume calculation for various log dimensions such as hollow, bent, and defects.
SFD and STAT also extended their appreciation to the trainers and participants for their contributions to making this course a success.

Len Talif: Mangrove licence holders statewide will need Permit to Enter Coupe before beginning operations

KUCHING (May 23): Mangrove licence holders across Sarawak will soon be required to apply for a Permit to Enter Coupe (PEC) before they can begin operations, said Datuk Len Talif Salleh. The Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment said at present, PEC is already being enforced in the Sarikei area, particularly the Rajang Basin. He explained that the PEC is an official document issued by the Sarawak Forest Department to logging licence holders, including those with mangrove licences, before they are allowed to operate. 'The PEC is part of the management and control process for logging operations, ensuring that all related activities are carried out legally and in compliance with established regulations and standard operating procedures. 'Before a PEC is issued, licensees are required to submit a Forest Engineering Plan, which includes a General Harvesting Plan and a Detailed Harvesting Plan. 'However, for mangrove licence areas, only the General Harvesting Plan is required,' he said during the question-and-answer session in the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) here today. He pointed out a PEC is valid for nine months and allows licensees to commence logging within designated harvesting blocks, ensuring that all activities are regulated and systematic. He was responding to a question from Azizul Annuar Adenan (GPS-Tanjong Datu), who had asked about PEC enforcement for mangrove licence holders. Len Talif said the Forest Department held a PEC briefing session for mangrove licence holders on Feb 10 at the Kuching Regional Forest Office. 'The renewal of mangrove licences must comply with DF Circular No. 2/2019 (Restoration Programme within Licensed Area), which requires replanting of mangrove trees in equal or greater numbers than those harvested. 'Starting from the Sarikei area, particularly in the Rajang Basin, and eventually be enforced throughout Sarawak,' he said. When responding to a supplementary question, Len Talif outlined the key benefits of PEC enforcement for mangrove areas. 'First, it ensures that mangrove wood resources in Sarawak are managed systematically and sustainably by limiting logging areas based on a reasonable harvesting cycle and enforcing a minimum cutting diameter of no less than 10cm DBH (diameter at breast height),' he explained. He noted that extraction is monitored through pre-harvest stock inventories, helping to prevent over-harvesting and ensuring long-term resource availability. 'This is also to prevent logging outside licensed areas and curbs illegal logging activities in mangrove forests,' he said. In addition, Len Talif said the PEC framework will enhance coastal conservation efforts and strengthen governance in mangrove forest management, aligning with Sarawak's climate change mitigation strategies. Sabah Forestry and French group to collaborate on agroforestry research deal

SANDAKAN: Sabah Forestry Department (SFD) and the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (CIRAD) have signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) to formalise a collaborative partnership on TRAILS 2, a long-term agroforestry research initiative aimed at transforming oil palm landscapes to support both biodiversity and sustainable productivity. TRAILS 2, short for Agroforestry Plantations for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, represents an ambitious step toward reconciling environmental conservation with agricultural development. Advertisement The project seeks to assess innovative oil palm-based agroforestry systems that integrate native tree species, improve ecological connectivity, and deliver critical ecosystem services such as soil fertility, microclimate regulation, and habitat provision for wildlife. The study site is at Melangking Oil Palm Plantation in Sukau, where the company has set aside some 100 ha for this biodiversity research. The LoI, signed at SFD Headquarters in Sandakan, reflects a shared commitment to addressing pressing global challenges—deforestation, biodiversity loss, and climate change—through science-based approaches tailored to tropical ecosystems. It also paves the way for more resilient land management practices in the face of increasingly unsustainable monoculture plantation models. As part of the collaboration, SFD will facilitate coordination with key regulatory agencies, such as the Sabah Biodiversity Centre and the Department of Agriculture to ensure the TRAILS 2 project aligns with local and national legal frameworks. Findings from TRAILS 2 are expected to provide robust data to guide growers, policymakers, and conservationists toward regenerative oil palm-based systems.
