India's aviation sector storms into world's top 3 markets, creates 7.7 million jobs
New DelhiIndia Aviation, IATA, Aviation Market, Job Creation, Air Traffic, Economic Growth: India's aviation industry has expanded at a rapid pace to become the world's third-largest aviation market in terms of passenger traffic, according to a report compiled by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). IATA's country director for India, Nepal and Bhutan, Amitabh Khosla, said India's rise to the third rank in the global market comes on the back of stronger airlines, growth of connectivity, and increased airport infrastructure. He described the aviadtion industry as a key driver of employment, economic activity, international trade and investment in the country. India's aviation now accounts for 1.5 per cent of the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and has created approximately 7.7 million jobs, both directly and indirectly, across the country, the report states. Khosla said, 'In 2023, the industry made a $53.6 billion contribution to India's economy, underpinning 7.7 million jobs in the country.' Tourism, supported by aviation, contributes Rs 2,710 crore to the GDP. International tourists add another $29.4 billion annually to the economy through local purchases of goods and services. 'Overall the travel and tourism sector accounts for 6.5 per cent of the nation's GDP and 8.9 per cent of total employment in 2023,' he added. The Middle East remained the top international destination for Indian flyers in 2023, with 13.7 million passengers, followed by the Asia Pacific region and Europe. To meet growing demand, airlines have ramped up flight frequencies and seat capacities. Scheduled flights increased by 77.7 per cent to around 1.3 million in 2024. Most of these were domestic, flights with increased from 613,000 flights in 2014 to nearly 1.1 million in 2024. Indigo led this expansion, operating 53 per cent of all departing flights from and within India. Consumers have also benefited from increased competition, which led to a 25 per cent reduction in real airfares in 2023 compared to 2011, Khosla noted. Currently, India has 116 airports offering commercial scheduled services, with 96 of them providing direct connections and 521 outbound international flights each day. Over the last five years, 103 new international routes have been introduced. There are currently 99 operational airlines in the country. India has also established itself as the sixth-largest air cargo market in the world, transporting 3.3 million tonnes of air freight in 2023. As of December 2024, the international sector stood nearly 20 per cent above its 2019 levels, while domestic operations were over 8 per cent higher which reflects the strong outlook for the future, he added.

Consumer Panel Slaps Rs 1.25 Lakh Fine On Saudi Airline For Lost Baggage
Last Updated: A consumer commission has directed Flynas Airlines, a Saudi Arabian low-cost carrier, to pay a compensation of more than Rs 1.25 lakh to a passenger for the loss of her baggage. A consumer disputes redressal commission has directed Flynas Airlines, a Saudi Arabian low-cost carrier, to pay a compensation of Rs 1.25 lakh to a passenger for the loss of her baggage. The commission also directed that the customer be paid Rs 10,000 towards compensation for mental agony. What's The Case? The incident dates back to January 2024 when the complainant, along with her family, had gone on a trip to Turkey from Mumbai between December 23, 2023 and January 3, 2024. Their return flight to the city was booked from Istanbul with a connecting flight from Riyadh. The complainant said that at the Istanbul airport, she handed over five bags for check-in, but only four of them had baggage tags attached. When the complainant pointed it out, she was given a physical tag for the fifth bag with the assurance that it would be sent to the destination along with the other bags. However, when they reached Mumbai, the complainant received only four bags at the airport. The complainant approached the airline, but the bag was not located. The complainant made multiple communications through personal meetings, emails, WhatsApp chats and written complaints to locate the lost bag, but got an 'unsatisfactory response" from the airlines. Ultimately, the complainant approached the consumer commission for the resolution against deficient service and unfair trade practice by the airlines. There was a "mala fide negligence" and the airlines "purposely avoided all the logical actions to find the lost bag," the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Mumbai (Suburban) said in a recent order. The opposite party remained absent during the hearing, hence the complaint proceeded ex-parte. What The Consumer Panel Said? The commission, after perusal of all the facts related to the incident, held 'there was a mala fide negligence by the Flynas Airlines supporting staff as well as officials who were in communication with the complainant". 'The opposite party didn't give any conclusive reply to the complaint raised by the complainant. The actions of the opposite party were not satisfactory in the said incidence," the commission said. The commission pointed out that the airline could have checked the CCTV footage to confirm the incident and could have brought more factual reports on record. 'However, we do not find any genuine efforts taken by the opposite party to confirm the incidence to trace the lost bag," it said. The airline 'purposely avoided all the logical actions to find the lost bag," the commission added. The commission further stated that there are standardised rules on compensation in baggage loss claims, namely the Montreal Convention of 1999, applicable only to international flights between countries that have ratified the convention. The commission stated that while the complainant had followed the rules in filing the complaint, the airline remained absent during the proceedings, despite being aware of them. 'The opposite party remained absent in the whole proceedings of the case even though they have full knowledge of filing of the present complaint by the complainant," it said. 'Hence, we have no doubt in our mind about the negligent act of the opposite party/Flynas Airlines. The allegations of the complainant about loss of luggage by Flynas Airlines are genuine," the commission said. The complainant is entitled to claim the cost of goods due to the loss of luggage along with compensation, it said. The commission directed the Flynas Airlines to pay Rs 1.25 lakh to the complainant for the baggage loss with six per cent interest rate from January 15, 2025, till its realisation. IPL final lap sends airfares flying high as Kolkata-Ahmedabad sector sees over 2-fold surge
KOLKATA: Cricket fever has gripped Kolkata once again - even without the home team in the race - as hundreds of die-hard fans prepare to fly to Ahmedabad for the final leg of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. This has led to a more than two-fold surge in airfares between Kolkata and Ahmedabad. The second qualifier on Sunday and the grand finale on Tuesday at the 1.3-lakh capacity Narendra Modi Stadium have led to a staggering 150% increase in airfares between Kolkata and Ahmedabad. Typically, a round-trip flight between the two cities costs around Rs 12,000-Rs 13,000. However, with only five daily non-stop services available, ticket prices for Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday have soared beyond Rs 30,000. Several travel portals reported that most economy seats were sold out, with only premium fares remaining. The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), led by crowd favourite Virat Kohli, secured their place in the final and a thrilling qualifier between Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians was on till late on Sunday night. Despite the early exit of the Kolkata Knight Riders this season, the passion among the city's cricket lovers remains undeterred. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Esse novo alarme com câmera é quase gratuito em Rio De Janeiro (consulte o preço) Alarmes Undo Hundreds are on their way to Ahmedabad for the final match, spiking the demand for flight tickets. "I have always been a crazy IPL fan. I watch every match at Eden Gardens and was absolutely sure to watch the final no matter which team was playing. But it was sad that the final was shifted out of Kolkata. Even then, with Virat Kohli and RCB in the final, I am planning to head to Ahmedabad for the match, stay there for a couple of days for a short vacation, and come back when the return fare cools down a bit," said Sonal Kapoor, a 27-year-old market research professional and a Park Street resident. Even hotel tariffs have seen a ripple effect. A travel agent in Kolkata confirmed that rates in both Ahmedabad and Mumbai have jumped since the schedule changes. "Hotel tariffs have gone up by more than 10%," said a travel agent. Travel-related searches to Ahmedabad also increased by 40%. City IPL fans were left devastated after the IPL final and qualifier 2, which were scheduled to be held at the Eden Gardens, were moved out of the stadium fearing rain playing spoilsport. It also created a political furore, with a section of BJP leaders claiming the match was shifted citing security issues, while TMC leadership claimed BJP's high-handedness to hold all important cricket matches at the stadium named after the prime minister. Since KKR won the title last year, Eden Gardens was announced as the host of the grand finale and second qualifier, and it was expected to witness a packed house for the marquee clash. With fear of monsoon hitting the area in June, the association reportedly even submitted IMD data to the BCCI, asserting that conditions in Kolkata would remain favourable for hosting the matches, but the BCCI decided otherwise. "I have supported RCB for years and seeing Virat Kohli live in a final is a dream," said Subhajit Banerjee, a young musician. "I will watch Sunday's qualifier and then take a final call on booking flight tickets to Ahmedabad for the once-in-a-lifetime experience and hope Virat Kohli gets to lift the trophy finally."
