Synagogue arson suspect motivated by 'cash, not hatred'

A man who allegedly started a fire at a synagogue was not motivated by hatred or religious beliefs but instead was following instructions for a payday, a court has been told. Adam Edward Moule, 34, was arrested over an attack on Newtown Synagogue in Sydney's inner west, and anti-Semitic graffiti sprayed in Queens Park in the city's east in January. He and neighbour Leon Emmanuel Sofilas allegedly left a van containing fire extinguishers filled with red paint to be collected by people who used them to spray paint "f*** Jews" on property in Queens Park. Moule then allegedly set a small fire at the synagogue, the boundary wall of which Sofilas allegedly defaced with nearly a dozen swastikas. But Moule didn't know the fire extinguishers would be used for offensive slogans or what was being spray painted, the NSW Supreme Court was told on Monday. Moule is not accused of acting out of religious hatred or in furtherance of any ideology or discriminatory belief. Instead, it's alleged he was following instructions issued by Sofilas, who in turn claims he was receiving directions from another man. The prosecutor likened Moule's alleged offending to a person receiving directions through service platforms like Uber or Airtasker. "Everything was kept very separate and it was passed down (through) distinct groups of people," he said. The organisers allegedly wanted police to believe they had valuable information which could be exchanged for an affidavit of assistance in serious drug matters. But there was a possibility Moule would commit further offences if he was released on bail ahead of his anticipated guilty pleas later in July, the prosecutor said. Moule's lawyer Mark Klees argued he had already spent nearly six months in custody on remand and wouldn't be at liberty for long before being sentenced. Refusing bail could have "drastic consequences" including Moule possibly losing his home and winding up homeless, Mr Klees said. Justice Desmond Fagan said the offending was "of a very low order" considering Moule's lack of initiation and the "almost negligible property damage" caused by the fire, but it was more serious because he allegedly knew he was at a synagogue. Starting a fire outside a place of worship conveyed a threat to the congregation and had "the capacity to induce apprehension in them of community hostility or even violence", the judge said. He granted Moule bail under strict conditions including daily reporting to police, abstaining from drugs and alcohol, and abiding by a nightly curfew. Moule has also been charged with growing 15 cannabis plants and possessing five stolen debit cards after police raided his home. He is expected to enter pleas when he returns to court. Gazan children collecting water killed by Israeli missile

At least eight Palestinians, most of them children, have been killed and more than a dozen wounded in central Gaza when they went to collect water, in an Israeli strike which the military said missed its target. The Israeli military said the missile had intended to hit an Islamic Jihad militant in the area on Sunday, but a malfunction had caused it to fall 'dozens of metres from the target'. 'The IDF regrets any harm to uninvolved civilians,' it said in a statement, adding that the incident was under review. The strike hit a water distribution point in Nuseirat refugee camp, killing six children and injuring 17 others, emergency physician at Al-Awda Hospital Ahmed Abu Saifan said. Water shortages in Gaza have worsened sharply in recent weeks, with fuel shortages causing desalination and sanitation facilities to close, making people dependent on collection centres where they can fill up their plastic containers. Hours later, 12 people were killed by an Israeli strike on a market in Gaza City, including a prominent hospital consultant, Ahmad Qandil, Palestinian media reported. The Israeli military did not immediately comment on the attack. Gaza's health ministry says more than 58,000 people have been killed since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas in October 2023, with 139 people added to the death toll over the past 24 hours. The ministry does not distinguish between civilians and fighters in its tally, but says over half of those killed are women and children. US President Donald Trump's Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff said on Sunday that he was 'hopeful' on Gaza ceasefire negotiations underway in Qatar. He told reporters in Teterboro, New Jersey, that he planned to meet senior Qatari officials on the sidelines of the FIFA Club World Cup final. However, negotiations aimed at securing a ceasefire have been stalling, with the two sides divided over the extent of an eventual Israeli withdrawal from the Palestinian enclave, Palestinian and Israeli sources said at the weekend. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was set to convene ministers late on Sunday to discuss the latest developments in the talks, an Israeli official said. The indirect talks over a US proposal for a 60-day ceasefire are being held in Doha, but optimism that surfaced last week of a looming deal has largely faded, with both sides accusing each other of intransigence. Netanyahu in a video he posted on Telegram on Sunday said Israel would not back down from its core demands — releasing all the hostages still in Gaza, destroying Hamas and ensuring Gaza will never again be a threat to Israel. The war began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas-led militants stormed into Israel, killing about 1200 people and taking 251 hostages into Gaza. At least 20 of the remaining 50 hostages there are believed to still be alive. Netanyahu and his ministers were also set to discuss a plan on Sunday to move hundreds of thousands of Gazans to the southern area of Rafah, in what Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz has described as a new 'humanitarian city' but which would be likely to draw international criticism for forced displacement. An Israeli source briefed on discussions in Israel said that the plan was to establish the complex in Rafah during the ceasefire, if it is reached. On Saturday, a Palestinian source familiar with the truce talks said that Hamas rejected withdrawal maps which Israel proposed, because they would leave around 40 per cent of the territory under Israeli control, including all of Rafah.

Melbourne anti-Semitic threat: Video from ‘cell' emerges online, taking responsibility for attack on business

Police are investigating a disturbing online video featuring a masked individual sitting in front of a Palestinian flag, claiming responsibility for an anti-Semitic attack in Victoria. The threatening video recently surfaced online and includes claims that the 'cell' has the address of Australians involved in the production of weapons supplied to Israel, adding it will distribute those details through it's underground network. It also includes details about how individuals could carry out attacks, showing fire-lighters in a bag which is then set on fire, adding a warning to be careful of DNA. 'This is an anonymous communique by the cell that torched three cars at Lovett Technologies on the morning of July 5th 2025,' the video begins. 'Let there be no illusions as to what this was. This was not an accident nor thoughtless vandalism. 'This is a clear and serious threat. 'If you continue making weapons components of any kind there will be consequences. Consider this a warning.' The video alleges that Lovitt Technologies 'has chosen its place' after '21 months of an accelerated genocide against the Palestinian people by the illegitimate Zionist entity'. It also mentions the 'murder of Aboriginal peoples across so-called 'Australia''. The video claims responsibilities for the attack at Lovett Technologies, claiming that it has the addresses of individuals working there. 'We will decide your fate, as you have decided the fate of millions,' the masked figure says. 'For the past few months we have been closely watching you. 'We have your addresses. 'All the information we have about you will be distributed to our underground networks. 'Stop arming Israel or else.' On June 5, three cars outside Lovitt were graffitied and set on fire. Anti-Semitic messages were sprayed on the cars that then sat there burnt. Victoria Police said the incident is currently under investigation by the Victorian joint counter terrorism team. 'The investigation into an incident at a Greensborough business earlier this month remains ongoing,' a spokesperson said. 'It's understood up to five people attended the property on Para Road about 3.55am on Saturday 5 July 2025. Victoria Police said they are 'aware' of the video. 'Investigators are aware of a video which has been circulating where a group has claimed responsibility for the incident.' 'This video is being reviewed as part of the ongoing investigation. The video with the masked individual includes a disturbing call to action. 'If you are watching this you can do what we have done,' the individual from the 'cell' says. 'Be mindful of fingerprints and DNA.' The individual then sets what appears to be a brown paper bag on fire. As the bag, which appears to be filled with fire starters, burns, the individual says 'every colony will burn'. 'Land back and liberation will grow back from the ashes,' the individual says. 'Death to Israel, death to Australia, death to America. 'From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free. Always was, always will be Aboriginal land.' The Australian Jewish Association shared the threatening video on it's social media saying 'Australian businesses are being threatened by 'Free Palestine' thugs'. 'This is what happens when the Labor Government refuses to act for almost 2 years,' it added. Police urge anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or the National Security Hotline immediately on 1800 123 400.
