Czech Nova woken from induced coma after crash
Czech skier Tereza Nova has been brought out of an induced coma, four weeks after undergoing brain surgery to treat injuries she sustained in a heavy fall during a training run.The 27-year-old, who competed at the 2022 Winter Olympics, fell on 24 January during her preparations for that week's women's World Cup downhill in the German resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.She is now in a stable condition and will be transported home, the Czech ski federation said."We still have a long way to go, but I am convinced that we will make it," Nova's partner and national ski coach Ondrej Berndt said."Together with Tereza's parents, we would like to thank everyone for the support we are receiving, and at the same time ask for respect for the privacy and peace that Tereza will need during her recovery."Nova was airlifted from the ski slope to hospital, where she was diagnosed with a severe traumatic brain injury with bleeding, a carotid artery injury and a fracture in the eye socket.After two weeks doctors gradually began awakening Nova by reducing her medication.She finished 28th in the Olympic downhill in Beijing 2022 and had competed at three World Cups this season before her accident.

Gennaro Gattuso named Italy head coach after Spalletti exit
Italy have confirmed the appointment of the former AC Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso as head coach of the national team. The move follows the departure of Luciano Spalletti, who announced his own sacking in a press conference after Italy's 3-0 defeat by Norway last Friday. Gattuso joins the Italy set-up after a mutual agreement to leave Hadjuk Split, the Croatian club he had managed for a year, who finished third in the league and two points off the title. The 2006 World Cup winner has previous experience managing at the top level in club football, having been in charge at Milan, Marseille, Valencia and Napoli, leading the team from Naples to the Coppa Italia in 2020. The 73-times capped Italian became accustomed to winning trophies during his playing career. Along with the international success, Gattuso twice lifted the Scudetto with Milan. The tough-tackling midfielder also won two Champions Leagues with the club, starting in the side that beat Liverpool 2-1 in the 2007 final. 'Gattuso is a symbol of Italian football — the blue jersey is like a second skin for him,' Gabriele Gravina, president of the Italian football federation (FIGC), said in a statement. 'His motivations, his professionalism and his experience will be fundamental to best face the upcoming commitments of the national team.' International management will pose different problems for Gattuso, however. Italy sit third in their 2026 World Cup qualifying group, with a 2-0 win against Moldova in Spalletti's final game having provided their only points of the campaign. Despite their success at Euro 2020, Italy have failed to qualify for the past two World Cups and have not reached the knockout stage of the tournament since their 2006 triumph. Gattuso will be tasked with guiding Italy's ageing squad to the world stage for the first time since 2014. Tel joins Spurs for £30m from Bayern Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the signing of the French forward Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich in a deal worth £30million. Tel joined Spurs on loan in January, playing 13 games in the Premier League and scoring twice, and will sign a contract that runs until 2031 when his loan officially ends on June 30. Tel was an unused substitute in Spurs' Europa League final victory over Manchester United that ended the north London club's 17-year wait for a trophy. In January Spurs paid a £7.3million loan fee to secure Tel's services, with an option to purchase the player for £45million, but have struck an agreement with Bayern for a lower fee.
