England's World Cup conquerers dumped out as German pair dismantled after mega ticket rush
Interest rocketed in the German duo's blistering triumph over Luke Humphries and Luke Littler in the last 16 but the dreams were short-lived Glory hunting German darts fans had their dreams crushed by the brilliance of Northern Irish duo Josh Rock and Daryl Gurney. Home duo Martin Schindler and Ricardo Pietreczko's sensational wins over England and Australia had lifted belief the hosts could claim a famous first victory in the World Cup of Darts. Interest rocketed in the German duo's outstanding work and blistering triumph over Luke Humphries and Luke Littler in the last 16. Going onto their next match, the home team battled back from the brink of defeat to sink the Aussies and further inspire belief it could be their time. As soon as Schindler landed the winning shot against the Down Under duo of Damon Heta and Simon Whitlock on Sunday afternoon, eager punters snapped up tickets to go to the arena and join those who had already booked their spots in Frankfurt hoping to catch the magical moment. Sky TV commentator Dan Dawson revealed: 'Since Germany hit the winning double this afternoon against Australia, more than 3,000 tickets sold for tonight, another 10 per cent were sold in the time since the quarter-final. "People have been buying tickets thinking this is going to happen. They might have changed their mind in a short space of time.' However, their dreams were short-lived as Gurney and Rock dismantled the Germans and buried their chances of title glory. The Irish pair stormed into a 5-0 lead to make the chances of success disappear and completed an 8-1 triumph to book a spot in the Final. It was a savage blow to the home supporters who bought their tickets before and after the last-eight win for Schindler and Pietreczko, but it was joy for the victors. Gurney was sporting towards the punters afterwards and said: 'I know it didn't go the way of Germany, but the atmosphere was absolutely incredible. I'd just like to applaud everybody here in Frankfurt. They were super and so respectful. I am so pleased to be in the Final.' Gurney played down the move through and added: ' The only thing we have done is qualify for a Final. We have won nothing yet. We have won exactly the same as if you were playing in the first round. We will try our damnedest in the Final. You can't win a pairs competition without playing as pairs. "He might do all the scoring and I might do all the finishing and if we can do it in the Final, we will give ourselves a good chance. But this man has been phenomenal. I'm privileged to play alongside him and thanks to Josh and the crowd.' Rock said: 'As I keep saying, playing for your country is a passion and we are here as a team, that's the main thing.'

Gennaro Gattuso named Italy head coach after Spalletti exit
Italy have confirmed the appointment of the former AC Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso as head coach of the national team. The move follows the departure of Luciano Spalletti, who announced his own sacking in a press conference after Italy's 3-0 defeat by Norway last Friday. Gattuso joins the Italy set-up after a mutual agreement to leave Hadjuk Split, the Croatian club he had managed for a year, who finished third in the league and two points off the title. The 2006 World Cup winner has previous experience managing at the top level in club football, having been in charge at Milan, Marseille, Valencia and Napoli, leading the team from Naples to the Coppa Italia in 2020. The 73-times capped Italian became accustomed to winning trophies during his playing career. Along with the international success, Gattuso twice lifted the Scudetto with Milan. The tough-tackling midfielder also won two Champions Leagues with the club, starting in the side that beat Liverpool 2-1 in the 2007 final. 'Gattuso is a symbol of Italian football — the blue jersey is like a second skin for him,' Gabriele Gravina, president of the Italian football federation (FIGC), said in a statement. 'His motivations, his professionalism and his experience will be fundamental to best face the upcoming commitments of the national team.' 'Aware of the importance of the objective we want to achieve, I thank him for the availability and total dedication with which he has received this challenge, sharing the FIGC project for the overall development of our football, in which the blue jersey plays a strategic central role.' International management will pose different problems for Gattuso, however. Italy sit third in their 2026 World Cup qualifying group, with a 2-0 win against Moldova in Spalletti's final game having provided their only points of the campaign. Despite their success at Euro 2020, Italy have failed to qualify for the past two World Cups and have not reached the knockout stage of the tournament since their 2006 triumph. Gattuso will be tasked with guiding Italy's ageing squad to the world stage for the first time since 2014. Tel joins Spurs for £30m from Bayern Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the signing of the French forward Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich in a deal worth £30million. Tel joined Spurs on loan in January, playing 13 games in the Premier League and scoring twice, and will sign a contract that runs until 2031 when his loan officially ends on June 30. Tel was an unused substitute in Spurs' Europa League final victory over Manchester United that ended the north London club's 17-year wait for a trophy. In January Spurs paid a £7.3million loan fee to secure Tel's services, with an option to purchase the player for £45million, but have struck an agreement with Bayern for a lower fee. Thomas Frank has approved the deal for Tel, who will become the first signing of the Danish head coach's reign at Spurs, after the dismissal of Ange Postecoglou. The forward is representing France at the European Under-21 Championship in Slovakia this month.
