Potential St Johnstone advantage for cup clash revealed as East Kilbride boss hails Simo Valakari
The manager of St Johnstone's first opponents of next season has spoken of his admiration for Perth head coach, Simo Valakari.
SPFL new boys, East Kilbride, will host Saints in the Premier Sports Cup opener on Saturday, July 12.
Their boss, Mick Kennedy, is a fan of the Finn's footballing principles.
And he's excited about the prospect of going head to head with the McDiarmid Park side next month.
'St Johnstone is a massive game to kick us off after getting into the SPFL,' said Kennedy.
'I know they had an unsuccessful season and had a new manager come in, but I have a lot of admiration for Simo Valakari in terms of how his side plays.
'He is trying to implement a possession-based style of play so I think that will make for a good game between us.
'We will go to try and win all the games, and we'll certainly show no fear.'
Raith Rovers, Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Elgin City are the other sides in Group F.
And Saints may have an advantage in getting East Kilbride, who were promoted into League Two through the play-offs, first.
'We will try and get one friendly in before the cup starts but that will be our pre-season,' said Kennedy, who guided his team to SPFL Trust Trophy victories over Airdrie and Ayr United last season.
'Because we finished a lot later than the SPFL teams and the boys needed their break we need to use the competition as our pre-season.'

The Jambos have hired a new head coach in Derek McInnes and Oisin McEntee is the latest recruit ahead of term 25/26. They will hope to be back into the top six and move closer towards third spot again, with their competitive campaign beginning next month in the Premier Sports Cup. The now 36-year-old spent six years in Gorgie and impressed fans with his consistency, playing 203 times before a departure two years ago. He's made 56 appearances for Yeovil and has now left the non league club down south. He said 'My time at Yeovil Town has come to an end, thanks for everything over the last 2 years, and good luck for the future' when it came to his exit.' A club statement read: 'As the Glovers look ahead to the 2025/26 campaign, the club can confirm the following contract statuses. Further updates on the squad and preparations for the new season will follow in due course.' Hearts hand out new contract B Team head coach Angus Beith has challenged Gregor Burn to seize his chance after signing a new one year deal. The 17-year-old made his B Team debut in the season against Gretna 2008 and went on to make 8 appearances. Burn has been a regular in David McNeil's U18s side and adjusted well in stepping up to B Team football in the Lowland League. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Beith said: 'It's great news that Gregor has chosen to remain at the club. He was a regular for the U18s last season, barely missing a game or training session, and also got some exposure to the B Team environment. When Gregor is focused, the coaches see an excellent young full back, with lots of potential, but our challenge to Gregor is to see it more consistently, in order to realise that potential. All the coaches are looking forward to supporting and challenging Gregor to help him achieve that goal.' Former Hearts striker leaves St Johnstone Andy Kirk has departed his role as a coach at St Johnstone. He was brought to Perth by ex Hearts manager Craig Levein and stayed when he was sacked to work under Simo Valakari, now making his own exit following their relegation out the Premiership. Kirk was at Hearts as a striker between 1999-2004 then in multiple roles behind the scenes post-retirement, a coach and First Team Manager and Girls' Academy Manager of Hearts Women. Alex Cleland also departs St Johnstone. A statement reads: 'The club can confirm that there will be a restructuring of the football department as we look ahead to the 2025/26 season. Assistant manager Andy Kirk and first team coach Alex Cleland both depart. We thank them greatly for all of their contributions. Andy arrived at McDiarmid Park as assistant to Craig Levein in November 2023 and, during his time with us, also took on the role of interim manager. He operated with professionalism throughout, and we wish him all the very best for the future. We will provide supporters with a further update in due course.'

Airdrie have point to prove after last season's relegation scare, says Frizzell
The Diamonds had a nightmare campaign last term Airdrie captain Adam Frizzell knows the spotlight will be on his team this season, and admits they have a point to prove after their play-off scrap. But the former Killie midfielder reckons with a bit of recruitment the Diamonds will be riding high in next season's Championship. Frizzell says it's an interesting league, with St Johnstone and Ross County coming down from the Premiership and Arbroath promoted from League One. But he says Airdrie finished the season strongly enough that they can look ahead with confidence. Frizzell said: 'St Johnstone and Ross County will be two teams that will be fancying themselves to win it, and it's very exciting. 'There are a few teams that it will be interesting to see how they pan out this year, and I think everyone will be looking at us as one of those teams as well, coming back off the back of a poor season, by our standards. 'But I think we finished the season strong, getting through the play-offs was massive for us, and the boys should take a good bit of confidence, going into the pre-season and tackling the Championship next season.' When asked if Airdrie have a point to prove, Frizzell said: 'Definitely. A lot of people had us written off. Whatever happened with Hamilton happened, and we can't do anything about that, but we took advantage of that and managed to stay in the division. 'We still did incredible to claw ourselves back into a position where Hamilton's deduction had any bearing on us – people forget we had five points at the turn of the year. 'We finished the season well, and you just need to look to take that into next season, it's all you can do.' Frizzell says recruitment is key for Airdrie this summer. He added: 'I think we need a wee bit, but not much. 'I think a couple of good additions, rather than loads of different ones. 'There was a big turnover last season and there will probably be similar this year, but not on as big a scale. 'With a couple of additions we'll be good, and definitely pushing in the right side of the table. 'I think this season will be very good for us, the boys will have learned a lot. 'We managed to come through it unscathed in the end, which is brilliant, and it's a very young team with a lot of learning to do. 'But with a couple of good additions, and the core we have already, I think it's an exciting year ahead for us, really.'

Two thugs who helped ambush rival football fans in pub banned from games for two years
Shocking video footage showed bottles being thrown into Airdrie's West End Bar where St Johnstone fans had gathered before a Scottish Cup tie against Airdrieonians. Two thugs who helped ambush rival football fans in a pub have been banned from attending games for two years. A court heard A irdrieonians supporter Cameron Patey "got a buzz" out of causing trouble. Shocking video footage showed bottles being thrown into the town's West End Bar where St Johnstone fans had gathered before a Scottish Cup tie against the Diamonds. Airdrie Sheriff Court heard a group of home fans confronted the Perth side's supporters and a fight spilled on to the street. Patey, 22, Ryan Lawrence, 29, and Nathan Dunsmore, 26, admitted causing a breach of the peace by fighting, shouting and swearing on January 20 last year. Annette Ward, prosecuting, said Airdrie fans were seen on CCTV leaving another pub and heading for the West End Bar before the match. She told the court: "They had their hoods up and their faces partially covered with scarves. The three accused were part of the group. "A large group of St Johnstone fans were already inside the West End Bar. "As soon as the Airdrie supporters arrived there was an altercation that turned into a scuffle between the two groups. "This quickly spilled on to the street and in the course of that an individual was assaulted by two unidentified males." The court heard that a fourth Airdrie fan was seen on CCTV picking up two bottles and throwing them into the pub. He was also charged but has since died. Patey has a previous conviction which resulted in him being given a football banning order. Lawrence also has football-related previous convictions. The court heard that, when asked about his role in the trouble, Patey told a social worker: "It's an escape. It gives me a buzz." But defence lawyer Tony Linden said: "He now describes his conduct as pathetic. His days of attending football matches and seeking out trouble are gone. "He plans to leave the Airdrie area and has an offer of employment with a starting salary of £40,000." Fraser McKinnon, defending Lawrence, said he accepted responsibility for his behaviour, but the lawyer added: "From the CCTV, it appears his involvement was at the lower end of the scale." Nicky Matteo, for Dunsmore, told the court: "This happened at a time when he was drinking and taking drugs to excess." Sheriff Joseph Hughes imposed two-year football banning orders on Patey, of School Quadrant, and Lawrence, of Park Street, both Airdrie. These will cover all regulated games in the UK and the pair are also banned from watching televised football in licensed premises. The sheriff said: "I'm satisfied this offence was related to the football match that day. It matters not if it happened before the game started. "It is appropriate to impose these banning orders to prevent violence or disorder at, or in connection with, football matches." Patey was also warned that he must behave himself over the next nine months while Lawrence will be under supervision for two years and electronically tagged for nine months, meaning he's confined to his home between 7pm and 7am each day. Sentence on Dunsmore, who is in custody on other matters, was deferred until December.
