Anupam Kher Reveals Jackie Shroff, Boman Irani Didn't Charge Fees for Tanvi The Great
Last Updated: Anupam Kher's film Tanvi – The Great, starring Shubhangi Dutt, had a modest box office opening but impressed at international festivals. Kher crowd-funded the project. Anupam Kher's passion project Tanvi – The Great may not have made a mark at the box office, but it continues to draw attention. The film, which stars debutante Shubhangi Dutt and released in Indian cinemas on July 18, 2025, had a modest opening, collecting around Rs 2 crore in its first five days. Despite its underwhelming commercial response, largely attributed to strong competition from Mohit Suri's Saiyaara, Kher's film had already impressed audiences at international film festivals. In a recent interview with Republic, Kher opened up about the challenges he faced during production. The actor-director revealed that the film's original financer backed out just a month before shooting was scheduled to begin. 'When we made the budget, it came to around Rs 50 crore. There was a gentleman who had agreed to provide 50 percent of the funding, which was a huge amount. Lansdowne was finalised, the Army came on board, everything was lined up. But just a month before the shoot, I was told they couldn't finance the film," he explained. Determined to not abandon the project, Kher turned to his personal network for help. 'I called up a few friends of mine in the US and India. We now have 10 co-producers on this film. It's basically crowd-funded," he said, noting that many of the contributors were doctors, bankers, and businessmen who had no links to the film industry. 'I told them I would return it after the release, but none of them have asked for it," he added. What's more, several prominent cast members rallied behind Kher in a remarkable show of solidarity. 'All four of my main cast members decided not to take money from me until I had it. Arvind Swamy, Jackie Shroff, Pallavi Joshi, and Boman Irani, I went to them and explained the situation. I said, 'I will pay you,' and they replied, 'Did we ask for it?'" Reflecting on the outcome, Kher said, 'It has not delivered earth-shattering collections or anything… Unfortunately, in the last 10 years, cinema has become so business-oriented that if a film doesn't do well commercially, we assume it's not a great film… I'm not speaking defensively. I'm also a part of the business world." Meanwhile, after being granted tax-free status in Madhya Pradesh, Anupam Kher's directorial Tanvi The Great has now been declared tax-free in Delhi as well. The announcement was made by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, who took to social media to share the development and express her appreciation for the film's powerful messaging. The film, directed by veteran actor Anupam Kher, follows the journey of Tanvi, a specially-abled girl with big dreams and a relentless spirit. Through her story, the film aims to spark conversations around inclusivity, perseverance, and national pride. Tanvi The Great boasts a stellar ensemble cast, featuring acclaimed actors such as Jackie Shroff, Arvind Swami, Boman Irani, Pallavi Joshi, Karan Tacker, and Nasser. Leading the project is Anupam Kher, who not only directs but also stars in the film, alongside Scottish actor Iain Glen, best known for his role in Game of Thrones. Ashwin Kumar's Animated Epic Mahavatar Narsimha To Go Global With Korean Release
"Mahavatar Narsimha," directed by Ashwin Kumar, brings Indian mythology to global audiences. Indian mythology is set to reach global audiences in multiple languages with the animated film Mahavatar Narsimha, which hit theatres across India on July 25, 2025. Directed by Ashwin Kumar, the film retells the iconic story of Prahlad Maharaj, a young devotee of Lord Vishnu, whose unwavering faith ultimately led to the manifestation of the powerful Narasimha avatar to defeat tyranny. While deeply rooted in Indian cultural heritage, the story is now being adapted for viewers worldwide. As part of a larger vision to globalise the narrative, director Ashwin Kumar confirmed that Mahavatar Narsimha will soon be released in Korean, English, Japanese, Spanish, and Russian. 'Mahavatar Narsimha is releasing in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. Currently, it will be available for a global audience with English subtitles. Eventually, we plan to have English, Japanese, Spanish, Korean and Russian versions of the film," he told Zoom in an interview. Ashwin also shared his creative influences, revealing a deep admiration for East Asian storytelling formats. 'I am inspired by Korean and Japanese storytelling and their anime. I watch a lot of their content. It is about time we take our content to them," he said. The film is produced by Shilpaa Dhawan, Kushal Desai and Chaitanya Desai under the Kleen Productions banner and is presented by Hombale Films. It marks the beginning of a much larger cinematic project, known as the Mahavatar Cinematic Universe. The franchise is planned as a seven-film series that will unfold over the next 12 years, culminating in Mahavatar Kalki Part 2 in 2037. Upcoming instalments include Mahavatar Parshuram (2027), Mahavatar Raghunandan (2029), Mahavatar Dwarkadhish (2031), Mahavatar Gokulananda (2033), Mahavatar Kalki Part 1 (2035), and the concluding chapter. Beyond cinema, the Mahavatar Universe is set to expand into digital formats such as video games, comics, and collectibles. Steeped in Indian mythology, Mahavatar Narsimha narrates the gripping tale of Hiranyakashyap, a demon king who, after receiving a boon of near-invincibility from Lord Brahma, proclaims himself a god. In stark contrast, his son Prahlad remains devoted to Lord Vishnu, refusing to worship his father. This conflict of faith paves the way for a dramatic act of divine justice. Ranveer Singh In Early Talks For Time Travel Film With Dinesh Vijan, Amit Sharma: Report
Last Updated: Ranveer Singh is in talks for a time travel film with Dinesh Vijan and Amit Ravindranath Sharma, blending sci-fi and Indian mythology. Ranveer Singh, currently riding high with multiple high-profile projects on his slate, may soon be venturing into the sci-fi genre. According to a new report, the actor is in early discussions for a time travel-based film with producer Dinesh Vijan and director Amit Ravindranath Sharma, known for Badhaai Ho and Maidaan. The project is said to blend elements of science fiction with Indian mythology. A source close to the development told Pinkvilla, 'Ranveer has heard the plot and liked the world that Dinesh Vijan and Amit Ravindranath Sharma are looking to create. It's a one-of-its-kind time travel film, that's deeply rooted against the backdrop of Indian Mythology." While Singh has shown keen interest in the concept, the project is still in its very early stages. 'However, he is yet to sign the dotted lines. The things are in very nascent stages, and the final script is also not in place at the moment. It's an idea, which holds potential, and Ranveer has shown his interest to step into this new world, once it is completely ready to roll. Dinesh Vijan and Amit Sharma are jamming to develop a proper screenplay at the moment on this idea of time travel," the source further added. The actor was recently spotted at the Maddock Films office, sparking speculation about a new collaboration. Meanwhile, Singh has a busy year ahead. He is currently wrapping up Dhurandhar, directed by Aditya Dhar, which is targeting a December 2025 release. Following that, he will dive into Don 3, directed by Farhan Akhtar, with filming expected to begin in January. Besides these, Singh is also reportedly attached to a zombie-themed film being developed by Jai Mehta. Both that project and the time travel film remain in the writing and development stages for now. As per the source, 'It's an ambitious big budget film, and the things on the casting front will be clear by the end of 2025. As we speak, the writing work is underway and the team intends to do more meetings with the actor once he is done shooting for Dhurandhar."
