Donald Trump says
Washington, DC: US President Donald Trump on Thursday (local time) said that in his recent phone call with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, he had made 'no progress at all' on efforts to end the conflict in Ukraine. Speaking to reporters on Thursday (US local time), Trump stated that over their phone call he and Putin discussed a lot of things, including Iran and the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
'We had a call. It was a pretty long call. We talked about a lot of things including Iran and we also talked about, as you know, the war with Ukraine. I'm not happy about that,' Trump said. Asked whether any progress was made on potential deal to end the conflict in Ukraine , Trump responded, 'No. I didn't make any progress with him today at all.'
During their telephonic conversation, Putin made it clear that Russia will 'not back down' on its goal of 'eliminating' the root cause of the war in Ukraine, Al Jazeera reported.
'Russia will not back down,' Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov told reporters after Putin's call with Trump. However, he added that Putin expressed 'readiness' to 'seek a political and negotiated solution to the conflict.
'Putin emphasised that Russia seeks to achieve its goals in Ukraine and remove the 'root causes' of the conflict, Ushakov said. The 'root cause' here refers to Ukraine's push to join NATO, following which Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 to prevent Kyiv from joining the US-centric alliance. The Trump-Putin phone call between two leaders came a day after the US paused promised weapon deliveries to Kyiv, including air defence missiles and precision-guided artillery, Al Jazeera reported.
On June 27, Putin said Russia will no longer engage in 'one-sided' games with the West, RT reported. He made these remarks while addressing a press conference on the sidelines of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) summit in Minsk. According to RT, Putin said that Western nations have repeatedly betrayed Russia by not honouring their promises regarding NATO expansion and resolving the Ukraine conflict. He emphasised that NATO is using alleged Russian 'aggressiveness' to justify plans to increase defence spending to 5 per cent of member states' GDP and bolster military presence in Europe.'
They [the West] are turning everything upside down,' Putin said. 'No one is saying a word about how we've come up to the Russian special military operation,' he continued, asserting that the Ukraine conflict's origins date back decades, when Moscow was 'blatantly lied to' about NATO's intentions. 'What followed was one expansion wave after another,' he added.
Putin said Russia's repeated security concerns regarding NATO's activities were ignored by the West. He said, 'Isn't it aggressive behaviour? That is precisely aggressive behaviour, which the West does not want to pay attention to.' The Russian President also accused Western nations of supporting separatist and terrorist movements as long as they targeted Russia.

CJI Gavai assures ‘complete transparency' in the collegium system for appointments
Chief Justice of India Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai on Friday (July 4, 2025) said that the collegium system for appointment of judges would uphold the principles of merit, transparency, and inclusive representation, and asserted that the process would not be compromised by external pressures. Speaking at a felicitation event hosted by the Bombay Bar Association in his honour, CJI Gavai remarked, 'We will adopt a procedure of complete transparency. Merit will never be compromised. We will have representatives from all sections of society.' CJI Gavai, who took charge as the 52nd Chief Justice of India in May, noted that efforts to increase transparency within the collegium had already been under way during the tenure of his predecessor, Justice Sanjiv Khanna. He also addressed recent concerns raised publicly by Justice Dipankar Datta about alleged interference in the collegium's functioning, stating that all names recommended would be duly followed up and considered fairly. Reflecting on his own elevation to the Supreme Court in 2019, CJI Gavai revealed that not all members of the collegium were initially in support. 'One of the collegium judges had some reservations, thinking my elevation might lead to unrest among senior members of the Mumbai Bar,' he said. 'But several senior lawyers met the judge in Delhi and clarified the matter.' He expressed gratitude to the Bombay Bar Association, saying, 'I will always remain indebted. My elevation to the Supreme Court, and now as Chief Justice of India, would not have been possible without the Bar's support.' The Chief Justice also clarified that the Supreme Court should not be viewed as being centred around one individual. 'The Supreme Court is not a CJI-centric court. The Chief Justice is only the first among equals,' he said. Deliberately avoiding public statements or interviews at the time of assuming office, CJI Gavai said he preferred to let his actions speak. 'Rather than laying out a roadmap, I chose not to make promises. Let my work speak for itself when I retire six months from now,' he added. On the reasons for the high pendency in Bombay High Court, CJI Gavai said, 'Insofar as my own High Court is concerned, I can assure that the names, whatever are recommended, we will try to follow it up and as soon as possible, the Bombay HC starts functioning at a full strength so that at least the issue of pendency is resolved at least to some extent.'

Trump hated his Colorado portrait — the new one just dropped and people are losing it online
Donald Trump was not a fan of the portrait of himself that hangs in Colorado's State Capitol, and he made sure everyone knew. After years of complaints, the artwork has finally been replaced. However, if the goal was to create a more accurate likeness, public reaction indicates that the jury is still out. Why was Donald Trump unhappy with the first portrait? After Donald Trump complained that his portrait in the Colorado State Capitol was "distorted," lawmakers replaced it with a new one. The new portrait, painted by Vanessa Horabuena and donated by the White House, is eliciting laughs and memes online, with some claiming it is just as bizarre as the previous one. Who painted the older version? Legislators in Colorado learned of this earlier this year when Trump complained that a portrait of himself on display in the state capitol for almost six years was "purposefully distorted." It appears that the lawmakers' complaints were successful because they promptly declared that Boardman's portrait would be taken down and replaced with one that more closely matched the president's preferences. Live Events How are people reacting online? With the beard and purported "guyliner" removed, Trump's previous portrait made him look like JD Vance, but the new one makes him look like Keith Morrison from NBC Dateline. Since art is subjective, many people's opinions of the new portrait varied.
