Greenpeace joins protests against gala Bezos wedding in Venice
VENICE, Italy (Reuters) — Global environmental lobby Greenpeace added its voice on Monday to protests against this week's celebrity wedding in Venice between American tech billionaire Jeff Bezos and journalist Laura Sanchez.
The event, expected to attract some 200 guests including US President Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner, as well as scores of stars from film, fashion and business, has been dubbed "the wedding of the century."
But some locals see the celebration as the latest sign of the brash commodification of a beautiful but fragile city that has long been overrun with tourism while steadily depopulating.
Activists from Greenpeace Italy and UK group "Everyone hates Elon" unfolded a giant banner in central St. Mark's Square with a picture of Bezos laughing and a sign reading, "If you can rent Venice for your wedding you can pay more tax." Local police arrived to talk to activists and check their identification documents, before they rolled up their banner.
"The problem is not the wedding, the problem is the system."
We think that one big billionaire can't rent a city for his pleasure," Simona Abbate, one of the protesters, told Reuters.
Mayor Luigi Brugnaro and regional governor Luca Zaia have defended the wedding, arguing that it will bring an economic windfall to local businesses, including the motor boats and gondolas that operate its myriad canals.
Zaia said the celebrations were expected to cost 20-30 million euros ($23-$34 million).
Bezos will also make sizable charity donations, including a million euros for Corila, an academic consortium that studies Venice's lagoon ecosystem, Italy's Corriere della Sera newspaper and the ANSA news agency reported on Sunday.
Earlier this month, anti-Bezos banners were hung from St. Mark's bell tower and from the famed Rialto bridge, while locals threatened peaceful blockades against the event, saying Venice needed public services and housing, not VIPs and over-tourism.
The exact dates and locations of the glitzy nuptials are being kept confidential, but celebrations are expected to play out over three days, most likely around June 26-28.

Abductee family group to consider not sending leaflets to N. Korea
A South Korean civic group representing families of abductees held in North Korea said Tuesday it will consider suspending the distribution of anti-Pyongyang leaflets across the border. Choi Seong-ryong, the head of the group, said he received a positive message by phone from a high-ranking government official on Monday and will later decide whether to stop sending leaflets to North Korea after discussions with group members. The remarks came after Choi told reporters a week ago that his group is willing to halt the leaflet distribution if President Lee Jae Myung helps confirm the life or death of abductees through dialogue with the North and meets and comforts families of the abductees, particularly those in their 90s. This year, Choi's group sent anti-North Korean leaflets across the border by balloons or drones from Imjingak in Paju on April 27, from Cheorwon in Gangwon Province on May 8 and from a border area in Paju on June 2. But the Lee government has said it will consider revising the relevant laws and take steps to block the distribution of anti-North leaflets from the border areas. "The current government officials understand the abduction issue better than anyone else and they have helped us a lot in the past. I hope this government will definitely create an opportunity to confirm the life or death of the abduction victims through inter-Korean dialogue," said Choi in a meeting with reporters after paying his respects at the Belgium-Luxembourg War Memorial in Dongducheon, north of Seoul, to mark the 75th anniversary of the 1950-53 Korean War. Samsung, LG eye first-mover edge in robotics camera modules
LG takes lead with Figure AI talks, Boston Dynamics partnership Korea's top two electronics parts makers — Samsung Electro-Mechanics and LG Innotek — are accelerating their efforts to gain an early foothold in humanoid robot camera modules, which is seen as a blue ocean market with no clear leader yet. LG Innotek is in talks with US-based humanoid robotics startup Figure AI to supply camera modules for its robots, according to industry sources on Tuesday. The two firms are expected to finalize supply volumes and pricing in the second half, with mass production likely to begin in early 2026. Figure AI, backed by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, aims to produce 100,000 humanoid robots over the next four years. If the negotiations are successful, LG will become the official camera module supplier for the US startup, marking its first major achievement in its new robotics business. LG has been strengthening its presence in the sector, signing a partnership last month with Boston Dynamics to jointly develop a custom vision sensing system for the company's Atlas humanoid robot. The system will be tailored to Atlas' specifications to enhance its visual perception capabilities. The Korean parts maker is reportedly collaborating with more than half of the 14 humanoid robotics firms that appeared during Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang's keynote speech at CES 2025 in January. 'As the humanoid robot market enters mass production, interest in Samsung's camera modules is likely to rise.' Industry watchers predict the market for robotic camera modules will experience explosive growth. Eugene Investment & Securities projects the market will grow from 40 billion won in 2026 to 4.7 trillion won by 2029. 'With the smartphone camera module market reaching saturation, the robotics sector presents a rare growth opportunity. Early movers will have a significant advantage in what promises to be a fiercely competitive landscape,' the anonymous source said.
