WASHINGTON — Francisco Alvarez will attempt to postpone surgery on a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his right thumb, grip a bat while compromised and still be able to make throws while nursing that thumb. That Alvarez wants to try to return to the club in time for the stretch run and perhaps postseason is both admirable and somewhat difficult to envision.
There are not many who know what awaits the Mets catcher. But there are a few.

'It's doable,' reported Dustin Pedroia, who would know. 'The pain — it is what it is. It's going to suck.'
The best-case scenario for Alvarez became the best-case scenario for Pedroia, who learned to live and play with the pain, ripped off an All-Star and Gold Glove season and then helped the Red Sox win a World Series championship.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Manny Machado drove in three runs against Justin Verlander and the San Diego Padres beat the San Francisco Giants 8-4 on Thursday in a sloppy game. The Padres took three of four from the Giants and have won three straight going into a second straight weekend showdown against the defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers. Los Angeles swept the Padres last weekend at Dodger Stadium and comes in with a one-game lead in the NL West. San Francisco's Rafael Devers hit a 435-foot home run off Dylan Cease (6-11) leading off the sixth and Willy Adames followed with a 400-footer, also to right-center. The Giants took a 2-0 lead after the Padres misplayed three straight balls to open the third, the first two by right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. Tatis called for Luis Matos' flyball as he and center fielder Ramón Laureano converged, but he pulled up and it fell in for a triple. Tatis, who made a spectacular leaping catch to rob Devers of a homer on Wednesday night, then misjudged Andrew Knizner's fly ball that fell in for an RBI double. Jung Hoo Lee reached on second baseman Jake Cronenworth's fielding error and Knizner scored on a double play. San Diego tied it in the fourth on Machado's RBI single and Xander Bogaerts' sacrifice fly. The Padres scored six in the fifth, the first two coming when the Giants committed two errors on Freddy Fermin's bunt single. Machado's two-run double chased Verlander (1-10) and Bogaerts and Laureano each had an RBI base hit. Key moment Machado's two-run double gave the Padres a comfortable lead. WASHINGTON (AP) — James Wood broke out of a slump with a three-run homer, Riley Adams hit a go-ahead, two-run single in the fifth inning, and the last-place Washington Nationals beat the New York Mets 9-3 on Thursday to take two of three from their banged-up NL East rivals. Wood's opposite-field shot to left in the ninth was his 26th homer of the season but just his second since the second-year slugger played in his first All-Star Game. Rookie Brady House had three hits and an RBI for the Nationals, who got another strong performance from their inexperienced bullpen after All-Star MacKenzie Gore couldn't get through the fifth. Jackson Rutledge (2-2), Clayton Beeter, PJ Poulin, Cole Henry and Jose A. Ferrer combined to allow one hit in 4 2/3 innings, with Ferrer getting the last four outs for his fourth save. Francisco Lindor broke the Mets' franchise record for leadoff homers in a season with his eighth. It was his 25th homer of the season and 28th career leadoff shot. Giants drop series in San Diego, a reminder of how far they've fallen
SAN DIEGO — The San Francisco Giants arrived in San Diego on Monday trying to piece together crushed spirits. Outwardly, team leaders spoke of the hope that they could climb out of a deep slump and play for a postseason spot that's grown increasingly remote. Under the surface, this is a team that's taking every loss — feeling every mistake and injury — as a gut punch. A four-game series against the Padres was a sobering reminder of where this Giants team stands now compared to spring, when the National League West appeared to be a three-way race between these two teams and the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Giants lost an all-around sloppy game, 8-4, on Thursday to drop the series 3-1. Petco Park was packed nearly every day of this mid-week series, but the buzz was less about the Padres burying a division rival in the Giants and more about gaining ground on the Dodgers for first place in the division. The road trip continues with a three-game series against the surging Milwaukee Brewers, a homecoming of sorts for shortstop WIlly Adames.
