Gallery gets £12m for redevelopment project
A gallery that has been shut for two years due to problems finding funding has been given a £12m grant that could help it reopen by 2027.
Tate Liverpool has been handed the cash boost from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport to continue its refurbishment of the gallery on Royal Albert Dock.
Curators said the funding, alongside donations from the Garfield Weston Foundation, and the Ross Warburton Charitable Trust, will help the project stay on track for its 2027.
Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said: "The transformation of Tate Liverpool will mean this amazing cultural venue can continue to flourish for future generations."
Tate Liverpool's renovation will see the gallery "reimagined for the 21st century" by opening up spaces to display its collection and host world-class exhibitions, those behind the project have said.
Designs include a new public 'Art Hall' on the ground floor of the site, which first opened in 1988, and a greener gallery to reduce running costs and end the building's reliance on fossil fuels.
Helen Legg, Tate Liverpool director, said the "bold transformation" would help boost the visitor economy and act as a catalyst for regeneration on the waterfront.
In May, Tate Liverpool announced the first major exhibition of artist Chila Kumari Singh Burmanm, focused on celebrating the rich culture of the North, will form part of the reopening programme.

Shameless star and Everton manager to be honoured at Windsor Castle
Bafta-winning Shameless actor Anne-Marie Duff and Everton manager David Moyes will be honoured by the Prince of Wales at a ceremony at Windsor Castle on Wednesday. The pair will both be formally made Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to drama and Association Football respectively. They were named in the New Year Honours list. The British-Indian national became the first female, first Asian, and youngest ever chief human resources officer at consumer goods multinational Unilever. A museum manager on the remote South Atlantic island of South Georgia will be awarded the Polar Medal for her work. Sarah Lurcock is the director of the heritage trust on the subantarctic British overseas territory. It is around 800 miles (1,287km) south-east of the Falkland Islands and has no permanent residents. An artist from St Lucia, Sir Llewellyn Xavier, is to be formally knighted for services to community infrastructure and development on the island. Disney+ launches new £1.99 deal, but it won't be around forever
Sign up to Disney+ For a limited time Disney+ is offering subscribers the chance to sign up to the streaming platform for just £1.99 per month. The deal will give users access to some of the biggest shows of the moment, and the deal is being launched just in time for the releases of The Bear, Alien: Earth, and the streaming debut of Snow White. And that doesn't even take into consideration the huge back catalogue of the company which boasts recent hits like Andor, The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives and Good American Family. Here is everything you need to know to nab yourself the limited time deal. Disney+'s new deal is valid from 11 June until 30 June, and the good news is that both new and returning customers are eligible for this lower-priced subscription. The deal is only for Disney+ Standard with Ads and it will cost £1.99 per month for four months before auto-renewing to the then-current monthly price until the subscription is cancelled. This deal will save users £12 compared to Disney+'s regular monthly price for those four months. At the moment the subscription deal costs £4.99 per month. So what does the Disney+ Standard with Ads give you? Well it of course includes Ad-supported streaming with adverts catered to the platform's audience. Users on this tier will also be able to enjoy ip to 1080p Full HD video quality as well as 5.1 audio, and they will be able to stream on two devices at any time. One of the things that subscribers on the Disney+ Standard with Ads tier won't get is the ability to download shows and movies to watch on the go. But, if you're not too bothered by that, then the tier might be just right for you. Unlike the other subscription tiers on Disney+ there is no yearly plan for Disney+ Standard with Ads, so users will have to pay monthly to access the streamer. There are currently two other subscription tiers: Disney+ Standard and Disney+ Premium, while those wishing to give access to a person outside their household can also choose to sign up for the Extra Member subscription at an extra £3.99 (for Standard with Ads) or £4.99 (for Standard and Premium). What's to come on Disney+ from 11 June then? Quite a lot actually, as mentioned the next big releases on the platform include series 4 of the critically-acclaimed drama The Bear from 26 June, while Marvel fans can dive into the newest series, Ironheart, from 25 June.
